The secret case of Genie Wiley, the wild child. TLC Documentary

  • Not Synced
    [News anchor] Officials in the
  • Not Synced
    Los Angeles suburb of Arcadia
  • Not Synced
have taken custody of a 13 year old girl,
  • Not Synced
who they say, was kept in such isolation
    by her parents,
  • Not Synced
that she never even learned to talk.
  • Not Synced
    The girl still wore diapers,
  • Not Synced
    and was uttering infantile noises,
  • Not Synced
when a social worker discovered the case
  • Not Synced
    two weeks ago.
  • Not Synced
    The authorities are hoping
  • Not Synced
she still may have a normal
    learning capacity.
  • Not Synced
Among the first to see the child
  • Not Synced
    was Temple City detective,
  • Not Synced
    Sergeant Frank Linley.
  • Not Synced
    [Eerie music]
  • Not Synced
[Sgt. Linley] I already knew that
  • Not Synced
the child was 13 1/2 years old,
  • Not Synced
and I took one look at her,
  • Not Synced
    and she wasn't much bigger
  • Not Synced
    than my daughter, Beverly,
  • Not Synced
    who had just turned seven
    about 3 months earlier.
  • Not Synced
And, I really had a hard time
  • Not Synced
conceiving of the idea that the child
  • Not Synced
was the age that she was.
  • Not Synced
    The child, uh, obviously,
  • Not Synced
    had been severely mistreated.
  • Not Synced
She was still in diapers, couldn't walk,
  • Not Synced
she had no verbal skills at all,
    at that point.
  • Not Synced
    [Eerie music]
  • Not Synced
The last time I was on this street
  • Not Synced
    was probably 30 years ago.
  • Not Synced
    Yep, there it is.
  • Not Synced
    Hasn't changed much.
  • Not Synced
The back yard looks the same.
  • Not Synced
It's all weeds and dead grass.
  • Not Synced
Looks the same as it did in 1970.
  • Not Synced
    [Narrator] The house belonged
    to Clark Wiley.
  • Not Synced
A loner, Clark had turned his
  • Not Synced
    back on the world,
  • Not Synced
after his mother had been killed
  • Not Synced
in a hit and run accident.
  • Not Synced
    After the accident,
  • Not Synced
    things in the Wiley house
  • Not Synced
would never be the same again.
  • Not Synced
    [Sgt. Linley] The house was
    completely dark.
  • Not Synced
    All the blinds were drawn.
  • Not Synced
    There were no toys.
  • Not Synced
    No clothes.
  • Not Synced
    Nothing that would ever
    indicate to you
  • Not Synced
that a child of any age
    lived there.
  • Not Synced
    [Eerie music. Passing cars whoosh.]
  • Not Synced
    The child's bedroom was
  • Not Synced
    back in this corner.
  • Not Synced
    That was the bedroom.
  • Not Synced
    The, uh, windows were covered
  • Not Synced
to about 3 inches from the top,
  • Not Synced
which was the only natural light
  • Not Synced
that had ever come in there,
  • Not Synced
in all the time the child was
  • Not Synced
    in the bedroom.
  • Not Synced
The entire furnishing to the bedroom
  • Not Synced
    consisted of a cage,
  • Not Synced
with a, uh, pull-down chicken wire lid,
  • Not Synced
and some type of -- piece of wire,
  • Not Synced
securing it, when they closed it down.
  • Not Synced
    There was a potty chair,
  • Not Synced
    with some kind of homemade
    strapping device.
  • Not Synced
    [Narrator] For thirteen years,
  • Not Synced
    Genie had spent her nights
  • Not Synced
    locked in bed,
  • Not Synced
    her days strapped
    to a potty chair.
  • Not Synced
    During that time,
  • Not Synced
Clark had ordered his son John,
  • Not Synced
    and wife Irene,
  • Not Synced
    never to talk to her.
  • Not Synced
    In her darkened room,
  • Not Synced
    she had led a life
  • Not Synced
    or near total isolation.
  • Not Synced
    [Eerie music]
  • Not Synced
    Even close neighbors
  • Not Synced
    were completely unaware
  • Not Synced
    of her presence.
  • Not Synced
[Neighbor] I came home from work,
  • Not Synced
    and the police was here,
  • Not Synced
and they came to question us.
  • Not Synced
    That's when we found --
  • Not Synced
    found out what, you know,
  • Not Synced
    happened, and uh, you know,
  • Not Synced
that they had a little girl.
  • Not Synced
    Nobody knew. Nobody knew before.
  • Not Synced
And, uh, then we found out
  • Not Synced
what happened, how she was treated.
  • Not Synced
    I mean, everybody was shocked,
  • Not Synced
    and, just -- unbelievable.
  • Not Synced
    For their whole marriage,
  • Not Synced
Clark had imposed his will on Irene.
  • Not Synced
    Blind with cataracts,
  • Not Synced
she had been too scared to resist.
  • Not Synced
    But one day, something broke.
  • Not Synced
While Clark was out buying groceries,
  • Not Synced
she seized her chance, and fled.
  • Not Synced
    It was the first glimpse
    the world would have
  • Not Synced
of Clark and Irene's dark secret.
  • Not Synced
[Sgt. Linley] I met Clark and Irene
  • Not Synced
    at Temple City sheriff station,
  • Not Synced
    and they were both
    under arrest, at the time.
  • Not Synced
    When we interviewed Irene,
  • Not Synced
    she would make no mention
  • Not Synced
    of the family, whatsoever;
  • Not Synced
    particularly, the children.
  • Not Synced
I attempted, along with my partner,
  • Not Synced
    to interview Clark.
  • Not Synced
He refused to talk to us.
  • Not Synced
    He wouldn't say a word.
  • Not Synced
    He never even acknowledged
  • Not Synced
    that he understood
    what we were talking about.
  • Not Synced
    [Reporter] Mr. Wiley?
  • Not Synced
    [Clark] Yes ma'am.
  • Not Synced
Why did you keep your daughter
  • Not Synced
    in a room --
  • Not Synced
[Lawyer] Mr. Wiley has no comment.
  • Not Synced
    [Clark] No comment.
  • Not Synced
[Lawyer] We haven't had time to discuss
    the charges.
  • Not Synced
    We haven't even seen them.
  • Not Synced
[Narrator] Unable to face the truth,
  • Not Synced
Clark took matters into his own hands.
  • Not Synced
    [Eerie music]
  • Not Synced
    [News announcer] This morning,
  • Not Synced
    the authorities reported
  • Not Synced
that 70 year old Clark Wiley
  • Not Synced
    shot and killed himself,
  • Not Synced
just before he was to go to court
  • Not Synced
    and be arraigned
  • Not Synced
    for child abuse.
  • Not Synced
    [Narrator] After 13 years,
