Wellness Central: Sleep

  • 0:00 - 0:08
    >> When I don't sleep well at night,
I'm very lethargic and I'm very cranky.
  • 0:08 - 0:13
    >> When I haven't got enough sleep,
    I feel tired I can't focus well.
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    Just generally, I'm not effective.
  • 0:15 - 0:19
    I'm not capable of really
    being a student that day.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    >> My brain becomes very foggy.
  • 0:22 - 0:26
I have such low energy that
I start nodding off in class.
  • 0:26 - 0:31
    >> I've sort of made it my mantra, like, don't
listen to yourself first thing in the morning.
  • 0:31 - 0:36
Because when I get, like, barely any sleep, I
keep telling myself, maybe I could call in sick.
  • 0:36 - 0:39
Or maybe I could just, like, take
the day off and just sleep in.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
But I still have to force myself through
the day because I can't get away with that.
  • 0:43 - 0:47
    >> You know, you tired your concentration
    level is down [brief laughter].
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    You fall asleep, you know.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
And so, it's important to get that sleep.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    >> The reasons I might not
get a good night's sleep is
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    because I'm anxious for the
    midterm that's tomorrow.
  • 0:59 - 1:03
    >> I'm on the internet and just watching
videos or I'm going out with friends
  • 1:03 - 1:05
and they say, well let's stay till midnight.
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    >> Stress and anxiety.
  • 1:07 - 1:10
    Sometimes it's body pain.
  • 1:10 - 1:14
    >> So, I'm researching and I, you know,
before you know it, you did for hours.
  • 1:15 - 1:21
Finally, you get finished and it's like
3:00 in the morning, oh [brief laughter].
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    >> The main contributing factor
would be a new video game.
  • 1:24 - 1:30
I have a problem when it comes to getting into a
new video game, where I forget what time it is.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    You kind of trick yourself
    into thinking, you know,
  • 1:32 - 1:34
I can get away with, like, seven hours of sleep.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
And then you kind of push that
    time, like, even farther back.
  • 1:37 - 1:39
Like, I get away with six hours
of sleep, five hours, four hours.
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    But suddenly, you have, like,
    three hours of sleep.
  • 1:41 - 1:44
And then at a certain point you
decide okay, maybe I can get away
  • 1:44 - 1:46
with just, like, not sleeping tonight.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    >> After a great night sleep, I feel alive.
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    >> Oh, I feel a lot better
    after a great night's sleep.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
I wake up, like, not dreading the day.
  • 1:55 - 1:56
I have a lot more positive attitude.
  • 1:56 - 2:00
And I feel a lot more motivated
    to just work through everything.
  • 2:00 - 2:01
    >> I am ready to take on the day.
  • 2:01 - 2:02
    Yes, I can do this!
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    I feel confident.
  • 2:04 - 2:05
    I feel joyful.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    >> So, when you're really ready
for sleep and you lay down
  • 2:07 - 2:11
and go to sleep, you wake up really refreshed.
  • 2:11 - 2:17
    >> Yeah, sleeping is good [brief laughter].
  • 2:17 - 2:23
    >> I don't get a great night's sleep, unless
I get a good workout, good diet that day.
  • 2:24 - 2:25
    >> Leaving caffeine alone.
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    Don't eat sugar.
  • 2:26 - 2:31
All of that can stimulate you to the point
where you're not getting a good night's sleep.
  • 2:31 - 2:36
So, I have weaned myself off of those
products and I sleep much better now.
  • 2:37 - 2:43
    >> I go to bed at 9:00, so that if worst
case scenario, I can at least wake up early.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    >> So, this might not come
as a surprise to some people.
  • 2:45 - 2:50
But for thousands of years plants such as hops,
passion flower, chamomile and valerian root,
  • 2:50 - 2:53
have been used to help for sleep.
  • 2:53 - 2:59
    >> Did you know that taking a nap has
been shown to increase memory retention.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    Especially, right after learning.
  • 3:02 - 3:03
    Keep it under 40 minutes.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    Some college health centers
have a room just for resting.
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    Check yours out.
  • 3:08 - 3:10
