What is Ethnography?
-
0:04 - 0:07There is not one right answer to the question.
-
0:07 - 0:10Ethnography can mean different things to different people.
-
0:10 - 0:16It can be part anthropology, part sociology and part investigative journalism.
-
0:16 - 0:19This is what it means to us.
-
0:23 - 0:29In the simplest terms ethnography is a picture or a portrait of a group of people.
-
0:29 - 0:36It is doing our best to describe something about a culture from the perspective of those inside it.
-
0:36 - 0:41The idea is to join a conversation already taking place and to learn what is important to people
-
0:41 - 0:44What they value and what they naturally talk about
-
0:44 - 0:47It is letting people tell us who they are
-
0:53 - 0:57You are highly emotional, you know
-
0:59 - 1:05But unlike other forms of research ethnography omits our own cultural perspectives.
-
1:05 - 1:09For example we were Americans in a Balkan space
-
1:09 - 1:12Protestants in an Orthodox space
-
1:12 - 1:16and conflict sheltered in a conflict ridden space.
-
1:16 - 1:21In this way ethnography functions not only as a description of a foreign culture
-
1:21 - 1:25but also a commentary on our culture.
-
1:25 - 1:31It is only through our interaction with others that we discover our own biases, our own identities
-
1:31 - 1:34and our own collective culture
-
1:37 - 1:41Ethnography involves field work which necessitates interaction
-
1:41 - 1:46We couldn’t be afraid to get involved, to get our hands dirty
-
1:46 - 1:54Several data collection methods were used, including outside research, observation and interviews
-
1:54 - 1:59in this way we attempt to corroborate our findings in different ways
-
1:59 - 2:02Ethnography is always of interest
-
2:05 - 2:08Ethnography is recognizing that everyone has a story
-
2:08 - 2:12We had to see people as more than just data informants
-
2:12 - 2:14It means really getting to know people
-
2:14 - 2:18It is learning how to communicate with people who are different than us
-
2:18 - 2:21and seeking to understand them through being a good listener
-
2:21 - 2:27asking open-ended questions and letting whomever we are talking to direct the conversation
-
2:29 - 2:31We interviewed in pairs
-
2:31 - 2:37So while one person asked the questions and engaged the interviewee the other person took notes
-
2:37 - 2:45In order to preserve the voices of our interviewee’s we tried to write down everything we heard
-
2:45 - 2:50to capture every word, even if it seemed trivial or insignificant at the moment
-
2:50 - 2:57After interviewing for at least four hours a day we typed up everything we had written
-
2:57 - 2:59for the next several hours
-
2:59 - 3:02which takes forever by the way
-
3:02 - 3:05Ethnography is writing and writing and writing!
-
3:05 - 3:10Then we went back and read everything we typed and tried to locate emergent themes
-
3:12 - 3:18Once a week we would all meet together to discuss patterns and themes, bounce ideas off one another
-
3:18 - 3:23reformulate the questions and make sure we were all heading in the same direction
-
3:29 - 3:34Ethnography is maintaining a level of academic professionalism at all times

- What is Ethnography?
- Description:
-
I went with my wife and her cohort to Serbia in July of 2008. They were conducting ethnographic research for a presentation in the fall. I produced, shot, and edited this video to explain what is ethnography. It was a challenging, yet very rewarding, experience!
