How I made friends with reality

  • Not Synced
I have stage IV lung cancer.
  • Not Synced
    Oh, I know, "poor me."
  • Not Synced
    I don't feel that way.
  • Not Synced
    I'm so OK with it.
  • Not Synced
And granted, I have certain advantages.
  • Not Synced
    Not everybody can take
    so cavalier and attitude.
  • Not Synced
    I don't have young children.
  • Not Synced
    I have a grown daughter who's
    brilliant and happy and wonderful.
  • Not Synced
I don't have huge financial stress.
  • Not Synced
    My cancer isn't that aggressive.
  • Not Synced
    It's kind of like
    the Democratic leadership --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    not concinved it can win.
  • Not Synced
    It's basically just sitting there,
  • Not Synced
    waiting for Goldman Sachs
    to give it some money.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Oh!
  • Not Synced
And the best thing of all:
  • Not Synced
    I have a major accomplishment
    under my belt.
  • Not Synced
    Yes.
  • Not Synced
I didn't even know it until someone
    tweeted me a year ago.
  • Not Synced
    And here's what they said:
  • Not Synced
    "You are responsible
  • Not Synced
    for the pussification
    of the American male."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Not that I can take
    all the credit, but ...
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
But what if you don't have my advantages?
  • Not Synced
The only advice I can give you
is to do what I did:
  • Not Synced
    make friends with reality.
  • Not Synced
You couldn't have a worse relationship
    with reality than I did.
  • Not Synced
    From the getgo,
  • Not Synced
I wasn't even attracted to reality.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
If they'd had Tinder when I met reality,
  • Not Synced
    I would have swiped left
  • Not Synced
and the whole thing would have been over.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    And reality and I --
  • Not Synced
we don't share the same values,
  • Not Synced
    the same goals --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    To be honest,
  • Not Synced
    I don't have goals;
  • Not Synced
    I have fantasies.
  • Not Synced
    They're exactly like goals
    but without the hard work.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
I'm not a big fan of hard work,
  • Not Synced
    but you know reality --
  • Not Synced
it's either push, push, push, push, push
  • Not Synced
    through its agent --
  • Not Synced
    the executive brain function --
  • Not Synced
one of the [yays] of dying:
  • Not Synced
    my executive brain function
won't have me to kick around anymore.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    But something happened
  • Not Synced
    that made me realize
  • Not Synced
that reality may not be reality.
  • Not Synced
    Though it happened was because
    I basically wanted reality
  • Not Synced
    to leave me alone,
  • Not Synced
but I wanted to be left alone
    in a nice house
  • Not Synced
    with a [Wolf range]
  • Not Synced
    and subzero refrigerator,
  • Not Synced
    private yoga lessons --
  • Not Synced
I ended up with a development
    deal at Disney,
  • Not Synced
and one day I found myself
    in my new office
  • Not Synced
    on Two Dopey Drive --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    which reality thought
I should be proud of ...
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
And I'm staring at the present
they sent me to celebrate my arrival.
  • Not Synced
Not the [Lillith] vase or the grand piano
I've heard of other people getting,
  • Not Synced
    but a three-foot-tall,
    stuffed Mickey Mouse
  • Not Synced
with a catalogue in case I wanted
    to order some more stuff
  • Not Synced
that didn't jive with my aesthetic.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
And when I looked up in the catalogue
  • Not Synced
    to see how much
    this three-foot-high mouse cost,
  • Not Synced
    here's how it was described:
  • Not Synced
    "Life-sized."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    And that's when I knew.
  • Not Synced
    Reality wasn't "reality,"
  • Not Synced
    reality was an imposter.
  • Not Synced
So I dived into quantum physics
    and chaos theory
  • Not Synced
to try to find actual reality,
  • Not Synced
    and I've just finished a movie --
  • Not Synced
    yes, finally finished --
  • Not Synced
    about all that,
  • Not Synced
so I won't go into it here,
  • Not Synced
and anyway it wasn't until after
    we shot the movie
  • Not Synced
    when I broke my leg,
  • Not Synced
    and then it didn't heal,
  • Not Synced
and then they had to do
    another surgery a year later,
  • Not Synced
and then that took a year --
  • Not Synced
    two years in a wheelchair.
  • Not Synced
And that's when I came into contact
    with actual reality:
  • Not Synced
    limits.
  • Not Synced
    Those very limits I'd spent
    my whole life denying
  • Not Synced
    and pushing past
  • Not Synced
    and ignoring
  • Not Synced
    were real,
  • Not Synced
and I had to deal with them,
  • Not Synced
    and I took imagination, creativity
    and my entire skillset.
  • Not Synced
It turned out I was great
    at actual reality.
  • Not Synced
I didn't just come to terms with it,
  • Not Synced
    I fell in love.
  • Not Synced
    And I should've known,
  • Not Synced
    given my equally shaky relationship
    with the zeitgeist --
  • Not Synced
I'll just say if anyone's in the market
    for a [Beta Max] --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
I should have known that the moment
I fell in love with reality,
  • Not Synced
the rest of the country would decide
to go in the opposite direction.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
But I'm not here to talk about Trump
or the alt-right or climate change deniers
  • Not Synced
or even the makers of this thing,
  • Not Synced
which I would have called a box,
  • Not Synced
except that right here it says,
  • Not Synced
    "This is not a box."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    They're gaslighting me.
  • Not Synced
    (Laugther)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
But what I do want to talk about
  • Not Synced
is a personal challenge to reality
  • Not Synced
    that I take personally,
  • Not Synced
and I want to preface it by saying
    that I absolutely love science.
  • Not Synced
    I have this --
  • Not Synced
    not a scientist myself --
  • Not Synced
but an uncanny ability to understand
    everything about science,
  • Not Synced
    except the actual science --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    which is math.
  • Not Synced
    But the most outlandish concepts
    make sense to me.
  • Not Synced
    String Theory.
  • Not Synced
The idea that all of reality emanates
from the vibrations of these tiny --
  • Not Synced
I call it "The Big Twang" --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Wave particle reality;
  • Not Synced
    the idea that one thing
    can manifest as two things,
  • Not Synced
    you know?
  • Not Synced
    That a photon can manifest
as a wave and a particle coincided
  • Not Synced
    with my deepest intuitions
  • Not Synced
that people are good and bad,
  • Not Synced
    ideas are right and wrong.
  • Not Synced
So I was right about penis envy
and he was wrong about who has it.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    And then there's this slight
    variation on that,
  • Not Synced
which is reality looks like two things,
  • Not Synced
but it turns out to be the interaction
    of those two things,
  • Not Synced
    like space/time,
  • Not Synced
    mass/energy
  • Not Synced
    and life and death.
  • Not Synced
    So I don't I understand --
  • Not Synced
    I simply don't understand
  • Not Synced
the mindset of people who are out
to "defeat death" and "overcome death."
  • Not Synced
    How do you do that?
  • Not Synced
    How do you defeat death
    without killing off life?
  • Not Synced
It doesn't make sense to me.
  • Not Synced
    I also have to say,
  • Not Synced
    I find it incredibly ungrateful.
  • Not Synced
    I mean, you're given
    this extraordinary gift --
  • Not Synced
    life --
  • Not Synced
but it's as if you had asked Santa
    for a Rolls Royce [overshadow]
  • Not Synced
    and you had gotten
    a salad spinner instead.
  • Not Synced
You know, it's the beef --
  • Not Synced
the beef with it is that it comes
    with an expiration date.
  • Not Synced
    Death is the dealbreaker.
  • Not Synced
    I don't get that.
  • Not Synced
    To me it's disrespectful.
  • Not Synced
    It's disrespectful to nature.
  • Not Synced
    The idea that we're going
    to dominate nature,
  • Not Synced
    we're going to master nature,
  • Not Synced
    nature is too weak
    to withstand our intellect --
  • Not Synced
    no, I don't think so.
  • Not Synced
I think if you've actually read
quantum physics as I have --
  • Not Synced
    well, I read an email
from someone who'd read it --
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    You have to understand
  • Not Synced
that we don't live in Newton's
    clockwork universe anymore.
  • Not Synced
We live in a banana peel universe,
  • Not Synced
and we won't ever be able
    to know everything
  • Not Synced
    or control everything
  • Not Synced
    or predict everything.
  • Not Synced
    Nature is like self-driving car.
  • Not Synced
The best we can be is like
the old woman in that joke --
  • Not Synced
    I don't know if you've heard it.
  • Not Synced
    An old woman is driving
  • Not Synced
    with her middle-aged daughter
    in the passenger seat,
  • Not Synced
    and the mother goes
    right through a red light,
  • Not Synced
and the daughter doesn't want to say
    anything that sounds like,
  • Not Synced
    "You're too old to drive,"
  • Not Synced
    so she didn't say anything.
  • Not Synced
And then the mother goes through
    a second red light,
  • Not Synced
    and the daughter,
  • Not Synced
    as tactfully as possible,
  • Not Synced
    says, "Mom, are you aware
  • Not Synced
    that you just went through
    two red lights?"
  • Not Synced
    And the mother says,
  • Not Synced
    "Oh, am I driving?"
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    So ...
  • Not Synced
and now I'm going to take a mental leap,
  • Not Synced
which is easy for me because
    I'm the Evel Knievel of mental leaps;
  • Not Synced
    my license plate says,
  • Not Synced
    ['Cogatow ergo zoom."]
  • Not Synced
    I hope you're willing
to go with me on this,
  • Not Synced
but my real problem with the mindset
that is so out to defeat death
  • Not Synced
    is if you're anti-death,
  • Not Synced
which to me translates as anti-life,
  • Not Synced
which to me translates as anti-nature,
  • Not Synced
it also translates to me as anti-woman,
  • Not Synced
    because women have long been
    identified with nature,
  • Not Synced
and my source on this is [Hannah Aaron],
  • Not Synced
    the German philosopher who wrote
a book called "The Human Condition."
  • Not Synced
And in it she says that classically,
  • Not Synced
    work is associated with men.
  • Not Synced
    Work is what comes out of the head;
  • Not Synced
    it's what we invent,
  • Not Synced
    it's what we create,
  • Not Synced
it's how we leave our mark upon the world.
  • Not Synced
Whereas labor is associated with the body.
  • Not Synced
    It's associated with the people
    who perform labor
  • Not Synced
    or undergo labor.
  • Not Synced
    So to me,
  • Not Synced
the mindset that denies that --
  • Not Synced
that denies that we're in sync
    with the biorhythms,
  • Not Synced
the cyclical rhythms of the universe,
  • Not Synced
    does not create a hospitable
    environment for women
  • Not Synced
or for people associated with labor,
  • Not Synced
    which is to say,
  • Not Synced
    people that we associate
    as descendants of slaves,
  • Not Synced
or people who perform manual labor.
  • Not Synced
    So here's how it looks
  • Not Synced
from a banana peel universe point of view,
  • Not Synced
from my mindset which I call,
    "Emily's universe."
  • Not Synced
    First of all,
  • Not Synced
I am incredibly grateful for life,
  • Not Synced
but I don't want to be immortal.
  • Not Synced
I have no interest in having
my name live on after me.
  • Not Synced
In fact, I don't want it to
  • Not Synced
    because it's been my observation
  • Not Synced
    that no matter how nice
    and how brilliant
  • Not Synced
    and how talented you are,
  • Not Synced
    50 years after you die,
  • Not Synced
    they turn on you.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
And I have actualy proof of that.
  • Not Synced
A headline from the Los Angeles Times:
  • Not Synced
"Anne Frank; Not So Nice Afterall."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
Plus, I love being in sync
  • Not Synced
with the cyclical rhythms of the universe.
  • Not Synced
That's what's so extraordinary about life:
  • Not Synced
    it's a cycle of generation,
    degeneration, regeneration.
  • Not Synced
"I" am just a collection of particles
that is arranged into this pattern,
  • Not Synced
then will decompose and be available,
  • Not Synced
all of its constiuent parts to nature
  • Not Synced
    to reorganize into another pattern.
  • Not Synced
To me, that is so exciting,
  • Not Synced
and it makes me even more grateful
to be part of that process.
  • Not Synced
    You know,
  • Not Synced
I look at death now from the point of view
    of a German biologist,
  • Not Synced
    [Andreas Waither],
  • Not Synced
    who looks at it as
    part of the gift economy.
  • Not Synced
    You're given this enormous gift:
  • Not Synced
    life,
  • Not Synced
you enrich it as best you can,
  • Not Synced
and then you give it back.
  • Not Synced
    And, you know, Auntie Mame
    said, "Life is a banquet,"
  • Not Synced
    well, I've eaten my fill.
  • Not Synced
I have had enormous appetite for life,
  • Not Synced
    I've consumed life
  • Not Synced
    but in death,
  • Not Synced
    I'm going to be consumed.
  • Not Synced
    I'm going into the ground
    just the way I am,
  • Not Synced
and there I invited every microbe
    and a [treetathur] and composer
  • Not Synced
    to have their fill --
  • Not Synced
I think they'll find me delicious.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    I do.
  • Not Synced
So the best thing about my attitude
I think is that it's real.
  • Not Synced
    You can see it.
  • Not Synced
    You can observe it.
  • Not Synced
    It actually happens.
  • Not Synced
    It's not a --
  • Not Synced
well, maybe no my enriching the gift,
  • Not Synced
    I don't know about that --
  • Not Synced
    but my life has certainly
    been enriched by other people.
  • Not Synced
    By TED,
  • Not Synced
    which introduced me to
    a whole network of people
  • Not Synced
    who have enriched my life,
  • Not Synced
    including Tricia McGuillis,
  • Not Synced
    my website designer,
  • Not Synced
who's working with my wonderful daughter
  • Not Synced
    to take my website
    and turn it into something
  • Not Synced
where all I have to do is write a blog,
  • Not Synced
I don't have to use the executive
    brain function --
  • Not Synced
    ha, ha, ha, I win!
  • Not Synced
And I am so grateful to you.
  • Not Synced
I don't want to say, "the audience,"
  • Not Synced
because I don't really see it
    as we're two separate things.
  • Not Synced
I think of it in terms
    of quantum physics again.
  • Not Synced
    And, you know, quantum physicists
are not exactly sure what happens
  • Not Synced
when the wave becomes a particle.
  • Not Synced
    There are different theories --
  • Not Synced
    the collapse of the wave,
  • Not Synced
    [function decoherent] --
  • Not Synced
but they're all agreed one thing:
  • Not Synced
    that reality comes into being
    through an interaction.
  • Not Synced
    So do you.
  • Not Synced
And every audience I've ever had,
  • Not Synced
    past and present.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you so much
    for making my life real.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
