deaf volunteer in Ghana

  • 0:11 - 0:14
    Hello! My name is Marlene,
  • 0:14 - 0:18
My sign language name is this:
  • 0:18 - 0:23
(birthmark at the chin) and I am from Hamburg.
  • 0:23 - 0:29
I am here through the 'worldwards' volunteering programme.
  • 0:29 - 0:33
That is an umbrella association for many other organizations.
  • 0:33 - 0:36
I am a member of one of them:
  • 0:36 - 0:39
The organization BEZEV (Disability and Development Cooperation).
  • 0:39 - 0:43
What does the organization do, or rather, which responsibilities does it have?
  • 0:43 - 0:45
It is a contact point for volunteers
  • 0:45 - 0:47
who want to support development and work in developing countries in Asia, Africa or Latin America.
  • 0:47 - 0:54
Surely you have noticed that I am not in Germany?!
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    Where could I be, then?...
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    Yes, right, in Africa!
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    And where exactly?
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    In Ghana!
  • 1:04 - 1:08
How long do I stay in Ghana?
  • 1:08 - 1:13
    For eight months.
  • 1:27 - 1:31
And where do I stay here?
  • 1:31 - 1:38
I live with a native host family, in the small city of Swedru.
  • 1:38 - 1:43
And what do I do here in Swedru?
  • 1:43 - 1:48
There is a deaf school here in Swedru
  • 1:48 - 1:53
where I work together with the teachers.
  • 1:53 - 1:58
Do I teach in German Sign Language, my native language?
  • 1:58 - 2:01
No. The deaf people here have their own sign language,
  • 2:01 - 2:05
which is different from the one in Germany.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
By the way, the Ghanaian sign language
  • 2:07 - 2:12
is more closely related to American sign language.
  • 2:12 - 2:15
The children ask a lot of questions and want to know
  • 2:15 - 2:19
how it is to live in Germany and how our world there looks like.
  • 2:19 - 2:24
I am having a lot of fun teaching them.
  • 2:24 - 2:30
But I don't only teach, I am on the other hand also learning many new things from them.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
I am very fascinated to experience the different culture,
  • 2:32 - 2:35
the other life styles and the other eating habits in Ghana.
  • 2:35 - 2:39
It is also amazing for me to see how smoothly I am being accepted
  • 2:39 - 2:44
and able to integrate myself into the surrounding as a white person.
  • 2:44 - 2:48
It is very nice to have gathered such experiences.
  • 2:48 - 2:52
I will take these enriching experiences with me back to Germany.
  • 2:52 - 2:55
However, I do not at all want to remain the only deaf volunteer!
  • 2:55 - 3:01
Hence, if you have a big interest and it is your goal or dream
  • 3:01 - 3:04
to support the developing countries, but you do not know
  • 3:04 - 3:07
    to whom to turn:
  • 3:07 - 3:12
The organization BEZEV would like to continue working together with deaf volunteers!
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    You are VERY WELCOME there!!!
  • 3:15 - 3:21
I can really highly recommend joining the 'worldwards' programme to you and
  • 3:21 - 3:24
daring the great adventure- like I did- where you will gather so many precious experiences.
  • 3:24 - 3:26
In this spirit: ILY!!! ('All the best')
