Why do we think that stuff is funny?

- Dude... that's insane.

These kids are gonna be traumatized.

It's a good way to get
your kid away from your phone.

- (Finebros) So what do
you think of these parents
-
that did this to their children?
- They're horrible!
-
- I think it's kind of evil.
-
Those kids were scared.

- It makes me wonder
what else they're showing their kids,
-
and they're allowing their kids to watch.

- It should be awful.

I think it's awful, but it's so funny.

- Fantastic, man.

Whip that out at a party
ten years later-- it's hysterical!

- (Finebros) As a parent,
have you ever found yourself
-
doing something you know
will scare your child,
-
but you do it anyway?
- Well...
-
I have some very deeply seated fears myself.
-
I do not get off on my kid's fear.
-
- No. Sometimes I think
we forget they're humans.
-
They kind of seem
as your own personal play toy.
-
- Maybe?
-
Do I want to admit it? Mmm...
-
- Oh yeah. Many, many times.
-
That's actually my thing.
-
I always scare them
until they can fess up to things.
-
- Get out! I mean, like, behind the door--
-
some old school stuff.
-
You know, like jump out of the closet.
-
- My giant of a son
has been scared of cats.
-
When our cat had kittens,
we would put all the kittens
-
on his bed and stuff,
-
and he would be hollering
and screaming under the blanket.
-
I know!
He's older now,
-
so he can't call CPS on me.
-
- (Finebros) Why is that something
that parents do end up enjoying,
-
to mess with their kids?
-
'Cause we have memories of our dad
-
getting a huge kick out
of scaring us when we were little.
-
- I think it's just to get 'em back.
-
- Revenge, maybe? (laughs)
-
- Maybe it's because they were
messed with when they were kids.
-
- That's how my parents raised me.
-
Every time I didn't do my homework,
-
my mom told me,
"You better do your homework because
-
the Boogie Man will get you."
-
- If the kid's in danger, nobody's laughing.
-
That's a huge element.
-
I think it's just the emotional peak.
-
The kid thinks that their world
is crumbling before them, you know?
-
Right? And why that's funny, I don't know!
-
- (Finebros) What do
you think about the fact
-
that they're not just making
this video for personal use,
-
but they're posting it publicly?
- Yeah, you know...
-
there's a lot of things
that parents do on social media
-
that is embarrassing or upsetting
or scarring to their children.
-
- Dude, you're just waiting
for ridicule from your friends.
-
- It's awful, but I can laugh
because they're not my kids.
-
You don't want the world
to know you're terrible parents.
-
- I'll show it to my relatives,
-
but I would not post it on the internet.
-
Let's say I post something up on my son,
-
and then somebody
at school were to watch it.
-
Then we might have
some kind of a problem there.
-
- (Finebros) So let's talk
a little bit about Snapchat.
-
Is that something that your kids
have started to use yet or no?
-
- Um, not my kids.
My stepdaughter does.
-
- Yes, they do.
-
- Oh my god. That's all my kids use.
-
- My kids use Snapchat.
-
My son, pretty much is a journal of his life.
-
- Kids at school use it all the time.
-
I'm usually a victim of Snapchat,
as being a teacher.
-
- My husband got it,
and then I got it,
-
and then I made my daughter get it.
-
They don't show me all their stuff
-
and I probably don't want
to see it, quite frankly.
-
- (Finebros) So from
seeing how they're using it,
-
do you see why it is so popular
compared to other social media,
-
or do you not really get it?
- I personally don't.
-
- I shouldn't admit this,
but I have a BlackBerry
-
so I can't use Snapchat.
-
- I think I understand.
I want to use it too.
-
You know, I don't wanna be left behind.
-
- I think it's a little
more interactive and fun,
-
and those filters are great.
-
- I got hooked on Snapchat.
I love it so, so much.
-
- I have a serious Snapchat problem.
-
I Snap way too much.
-
- (Finebros) So you are
the first generation of parents
-
that are having to parent in today's world
-
with this much social media and apps.
-
How do you keep up?
- I don't know.
-
I really don't know and it worries me.
-
It worries me to no end.
-
- Luckily, some of the people
that I work with are younger.
-
They're in their early twenties.
-
I'll hear them talking about
something and I'll be like,
-
"Well, whoa, wait, wait."
You know, "What is this?"
-
- I go by what my kids tell me.
-
It's not me who's keeping up with them.
-
It's them trying to-- you know,
dragging me down to their world.
-
- My kids sort of tell me
everything, what's going on,
-
and I'm trusting them.
And that's the scary part.
-
- I don't do a lot of heavy duty checking,
-
which could be a problem.
-
Like, I'm very aware
that that could be a problem.
-
And I'm torn 'cause
when I was a kid, I had a diary.
-
If my mom read that,
I would've been mortified.
-
- (Finebros) Do you know about
the controversy that Snapchat has had
-
specifically with teenagers?
- No.
-
- No. I'm not aware of it. Tell me.
-
- Naked pictures and et cetera.
That type of thing.
-
- X-rated Snaps.
-
"Oh, but it's only on there for,
like, a few seconds."
-
But then somebody would screenshot it.
-
- (Finebros) Many have used it
for things like sexting.
-
- Ooh, I didn't know about that.
-
- (Finebros) Because they feel it's private
and that only they're gonna see it,
-
and then it's gonna go away.
They think it's not permanent,
-
even though there are ways around it.
-
Is that a subject you've had
to already broach with your kids?
-
- Not really.
-
Like I say, I'm in the dark.
I don't know anything.
-
- Definitely aware of it.
-
We've already talked to them
about those situations.
-
- Somebody could take a picture of it,
-
and save it, and blackmail you
or whatever situation is.
-
- We do talk about stuff like that.
It's important.
-
You take a cute shot
of yourself in a bikini,
-
and some gross old man
somewhere, by the way,
-
is gonna be looking
at you in your cute bikini.
-
- Consequences. Man,
I know I'm sounding my age here.
-
I gotta try and get
these kids to learn about
-
if you screw this up,
you're gonna pay for it.
-
- (Finebros) Okay, so finally,
back to this trend,
-
now that you've seen other parents
scaring their kids with this,
-
do you imagine you might want
to do this and scare them?
-
- You know what? I really would not.
-
- Heck no.
-
- At the age he's at now? Yeah.
-
But at THAT age?
The toddlers?
-
Absolutely not.
-
- If I could get away with it, I would.
-
- Of course.
-
You know, you always gotta
take advantage of your kids.
-
- Yes. That would be me.
-
I don't know if I would
necessarily post it though for everybody.
-
- Hell yes!
-
You know who I'll do it to?
I'll do it to my wife.
-
That's who we'll do it to.
-
She'll drop the damn phone, you know?
(laughs heartily)
