Choose a Primary Key in Access 2007

  • 0:10 - 0:12
    - [Narrator] Every database needs to have
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    what's called a primary key.
  • 0:14 - 0:17
And this primary key is a field
  • 0:17 - 0:20
that is unique for every single record.
  • 0:20 - 0:24
So, for instance, you would not
want to choose a primary key
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    for my first name field
  • 0:26 - 0:29
because I might have two work contacts
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    whose first name is Susan.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
And even last name I might know,
  • 0:34 - 0:37
I might come across two people
    with the same last name.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    Company, same thing.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
So you need to pick a field
  • 0:42 - 0:46
    that's going to be really
    unique for every single entry.
  • 0:46 - 0:51
An easy way to do this is
when you first create a table,
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    when you open access,
  • 0:54 - 0:58
    you're gonna usually have an
ID field name created for you.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
And this is a great one
    to make your primary key
  • 1:01 - 1:03
because it assigns a unique ID number
  • 1:03 - 1:06
to every single record in your database.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
So to make it a primary key field,
  • 1:08 - 1:10
just right click over to the left,
  • 1:10 - 1:12
and then click on Primary Key.
  • 1:12 - 1:15
And that will set your database
  • 1:15 - 1:18
for your ID as being your primary key.
