Prelude to Axanar - Full Film (1080p)
-
0:09 - 0:14This is a galaxy wide transmission
of the United Federation of Planets. -
0:14 - 0:19The United Federation of Planets Historical Society,
in association with Memory Alpha, presents... -
0:19 - 0:20The Four Years War!
-
0:24 - 0:30Stardate 2241.03, the planet Archanis IV.
-
0:31 - 0:33Founded nearly a century before,
-
0:33 - 0:37this research outpost has grown
into a flourishing full-scale city. -
0:37 - 0:40It is a shining example of Federation progress.
-
0:43 - 0:46[Soval, Vulcan Ambassador to the Federation]
There could be no Federation without Earth! -
0:47 - 0:53And the fact that the humans could
lead the formation of the Federation -
0:53 - 0:56just a few years after their
war with the Romulan Empire is... -
0:57 - 0:59nothing short of extraordinary.
-
1:00 - 1:03But it represents something very
different to the Klingon Empire. -
1:03 - 1:06Growing tired of diplomacy, the high-chancellor proclaims:
-
1:06 - 1:10If words were water, the humans would drown us all.
-
1:10 - 1:14The bad blood between the humans and the Klingons,
-
1:14 - 1:20meant that the job of preventing war and
leading the peace delegations, fell to Vulcan. -
1:21 - 1:23Regrettably, we failed.
-
1:29 - 1:32For 12 hours, the Klingon disruptors do not stop.
-
1:33 - 1:34Archanis is reduced to rubble.
-
1:35 - 1:38Thousands of its inhabitants are dead.
Countless more are missing. -
1:39 - 1:44The first victims of what will come to be
known as, "The Four Years War." -
2:13 - 2:15[Admiral Ramirez] They had been expanding their empire
-
2:15 - 2:18for 200 years before the Federation was formed.
-
2:18 - 2:22That there would be a conflict,
with the Klingon people, at some point, -
2:22 - 2:26was obvious, to most of the members of Starfleet.
-
2:33 - 2:37Klingons were certain that they could
merely take anything they wanted. -
2:39 - 2:44Starfleet's early losses did little to
dissuade them of that notion. -
2:57 - 3:01[Garth of Izar, Captain of the USS Ares]
Koriana VI, Vesta, Archanis, -
3:02 - 3:05we took some major beatings, the first six months.
-
3:05 - 3:11For most of that first year, our mission was
just to slow them down, while we fell back. -
3:11 - 3:16Unfortunately, the Klingons were unconvinced
the Federation was any sort of match for them. -
3:17 - 3:21And their belief in their superiority,
left us little room to negotiate. -
3:21 - 3:27Well, at that point, about the only thing we
were doing, that impressed the Klingons, was... -
3:26 - 3:27dying well.
-
3:28 - 3:31And, there was plenty of that.
-
3:31 - 3:33The Klingon supreme commander,
-
3:34 - 3:38the architect of the invasions,
was a warlord named Kharn. -
3:41 - 3:44"Kharn , the undying" is what they called him.
-
3:45 - 3:48[Sonya Alexander, Starfleet Captain]
The Klingons revered him, with good reason. -
3:49 - 3:54Vulcan intelligence is, if I may say, unparalleled, but...
-
3:54 - 3:58even for us, he was a mystery!
-
4:02 - 4:05[Kharn, Klingon Warlord]
It wasn't until the formation of the Federation, -
4:05 - 4:09that the high council began to take Earth, seriously.
-
4:09 - 4:12And even after the Federation was
formed, many on the high council, -
4:13 - 4:16thought it is a mere political alliance.
-
4:16 - 4:20Starfleet was never seen as
a match for the imperial navy. -
4:21 - 4:23Certainly not one that would
impede the growth of the empire. -
4:23 - 4:29[Ramirez] Their whole civilization, their whole culture,
is a monument to the art of war. -
4:29 - 4:35The early campaigns. Yes, the
Klingons were toying with us. -
4:36 - 4:42They were using a strategy known to
the Klingon people as vuvHa'chu'wI' to' -
4:47 - 4:50vuvHa'chu'wI' to'
-
4:51 - 4:58Which loosely, roughly translates as
"The strategy of least respect." -
5:02 - 5:04The epitome of their...
-
5:06 - 5:13arrogance, occurred during
the ambush of Inverness V. -
5:18 - 5:22[Kharn] The Inverness system, as you call it,
was our first objective. -
5:22 - 5:28Inverness, five planets, all colonized.
-
5:33 - 5:36Stardate, 2243.3
-
5:36 - 5:40The highly populated dilithium rich
planets, of the Inverness system. -
5:40 - 5:44[Kharn] For your kind, those planets were
merely a source of dilithium. -
5:45 - 5:48For us, those planets are sacred.
-
5:53 - 5:54God damn Inverness V.
-
6:01 - 6:02What a mess!
-
6:04 - 6:06It was the first time they used it on us.
-
6:07 - 6:09It was an old Klingon tactic.
-
6:09 - 6:13They had a word, natlhchu'wI'.
-
6:14 - 6:16It means, "The Devourer!"
-
6:17 - 6:18Day after day,
-
6:18 - 6:20it was the same thing.
-
6:25 - 6:29I get called into support some kind of counter-attack.
-
6:32 - 6:36By the time I got into orbit,
my orders had been changed. -
6:37 - 6:41Attack called off, battle was already over.
-
6:45 - 6:46We'd pull out of warp...
-
6:48 - 6:49into a junkyard.
-
6:49 - 6:52Fragments of starships bouncing off my hull.
-
6:53 - 6:56Fragments of the crews, as well.
-
6:56 - 6:58Eighteen starships destroyed
-
6:59 - 7:02Pick up the survivors, beam them up.
-
7:02 - 7:07We'd be beaming them up, and
one of two things would happen. -
7:07 - 7:12The transporters would blow out, or the
Klingons would show up and start shooting. -
7:12 - 7:15I could look down from orbit and see trails of smoke.
-
7:21 - 7:22For miles.
-
7:25 - 7:30Well that was it, something had
to change, or we were done! -
7:30 - 7:37An Andorian acquaintance once said:
"Don't push the pink-skins to the thin ice." -
7:38 - 7:40It wasn't very eloquent, but...
-
7:41 - 7:44the Klingons found it to prove quite prophetic.
-
7:56 - 8:02After two years of almost constant defeat, the head
of Starfleet, Admiral Slater is forced to step down. -
8:03 - 8:06Across the Federation, billions
wonder, who would replace him. -
8:07 - 8:09I was on the bridge of the Xenophon.
-
8:09 - 8:11It was my first ship in the war.
-
8:11 - 8:13An old Marklin class destroyer
-
8:14 - 8:19With Lt. Cain, our comms officer said that there
was a fleet-wide broadcast from Starfleet. -
8:20 - 8:22I told him to punch it up on the big screen.
-
8:24 - 8:26And that's when we heard it was Ramirez.
-
8:26 - 8:28That name spread like wildfire.
-
8:29 - 8:31You ask anybody where they
were when they heard it and... -
8:32 - 8:32they'll remember.
-
8:33 - 8:35We are facing an enemy,
-
8:36 - 8:40that is consumed and committed to our total destruction.
-
8:40 - 8:44His first speech to the Federation council was, incredible.
-
8:44 - 8:48An enemy that demands to be fought, and we will fight!
-
8:48 - 8:51There were 40000 people in Archer Arena.
-
8:50 - 8:55But I say to you our greatest challenge,
is not the might of a Klingon fleet. -
8:56 - 8:58And they all wanted one thing.
-
8:58 - 9:03The greatest challenge laying
before us, is to do what must be done, -
9:04 - 9:07without undoing the dream of the Federation.
-
9:07 - 9:08Hope!
-
9:09 - 9:12For myself, I have but one fear:
-
9:13 - 9:15Destroying the dream of the Federation.
-
9:16 - 9:20Compared to such a loss,
-
9:20 - 9:24I DO NOT FEAR THE KLINGON EMPIRE!
-
9:24 - 9:26[Cheers and applause]
-
9:28 - 9:29It was a good speech.
-
9:30 - 9:33Until I heard Admiral Ramirez speak,
-
9:34 - 9:39I had not foreseen the possibility of a peace
between the Federation and the Klingons. -
9:39 - 9:44Nor had I foreseen the possibility
that the Federation might win. -
9:44 - 9:48The battle-cry of Admiral Ramirez
sweeps across the Federation. -
9:49 - 9:56The first goal was to create a class of ship that could
spring Starfleet back into action, back into battle! -
9:56 - 9:59We had to leapfrog Klingon technology.
-
10:00 - 10:02It was called the Ares class.
-
10:03 - 10:04It was exactly what we needed.
-
10:07 - 10:10We had over a dozen other worlds working on it.
-
10:10 - 10:14It was the first pure warship that Starfleet had ever built.
-
10:15 - 10:16As for Vulcans...,
-
10:17 - 10:23though we had limited our contribution to propulsion,
environmental and defensive technologies, -
10:23 - 10:28there were many who wanted us to end
our participation in the war, altogether. -
10:28 - 10:32The Vulcan's going to do, what a Vulcan's going to do.
-
10:32 - 10:36But the Andorians, they were
happy to supply us the phasers. -
10:42 - 10:47Stardate 2244.1, near the planet Signus III.
-
10:47 - 10:49There will always be,
-
10:50 - 10:56detractors who think you are taking the initiative
too soon. That you are rushing the offensive. -
10:58 - 10:59I disagreed.
-
11:02 - 11:05The leadership of Admiral Ramirez is a welcome change.
-
11:06 - 11:08But his grand plan has yet to be tested in battle.
-
11:08 - 11:09We had the ships,
-
11:10 - 11:12and we had a core of battle-tested commanders.
-
11:12 - 11:14it was time to take the initiative.
-
11:15 - 11:17Well that was Ramirez's first roll of the dice.
-
11:18 - 11:22and they landed exactly the way we wanted
them to, the way we needed them to. -
11:22 - 11:24The codename was Operation Pegasus.
-
11:25 - 11:29Pegasus was the first test of the Ares class
against the ship it was designed to defeat, -
11:29 - 11:30the D6.
-
11:30 - 11:33The Ares class looked good in simulations, real good.
-
11:33 - 11:35But data can only take you so far.
-
11:39 - 11:43The only true test for a combat vessel, is combat.
-
11:54 - 11:59The new Federation ships were, unexpected.
-
12:04 - 12:06And then there was Garth. [Laughs]
-
12:06 - 12:09That mad Izar and son-of-a-bitch.
-
12:10 - 12:11That was his day.
-
12:14 - 12:18Garth likes to play down his
contribution, don't you believe it. -
12:18 - 12:21What he did that day, no captain had ever done.
-
12:21 - 12:22We got lucky!
-
12:27 - 12:29It was Sonya's maneuver that gave me the opening.
-
12:30 - 12:32Sonya pulled a feint to starboard.
-
12:37 - 12:39Garth just went for it.
-
12:43 - 12:44It was like a Klingon maneuver.
-
12:52 - 12:53It was a new ship.
-
12:53 - 12:57they said she was tough, I wanted
to see what she could take. -
13:01 - 13:03After the battle of Signus III,
-
13:03 - 13:07our ship captains started giving the
Federation its due as a worthy adversary. -
13:09 - 13:12and for the first time, we took notice of Garth of Izar.
-
13:12 - 13:14It was a Klingon that gave me that name.
-
13:16 - 13:19I guess there are a lot worse things,
that a Klingon could call you. -
13:19 - 13:20Yeah, sure, I'll tell you.
-
13:21 - 13:25They called me "Queen, Bitch, Whore of the Federation."
-
13:27 - 13:29The Ares class had withstood its first trial by fire.
-
13:30 - 13:33It passed with the gauntlet victorious.
-
13:34 - 13:37The Ares had proven itself and it continued to prove itself.
-
13:37 - 13:41It was bigger, faster, more agile, drip drop.
-
13:42 - 13:44And it was better armed than anything we'd, had before.
-
13:45 - 13:46We had lost the advantage.
-
13:51 - 13:54At the time, Starfleet crews preferred
to fight among their own kind. -
13:54 - 13:58Crews might be Andorian or
Tellarite, or Vulcan, or Human. -
14:00 - 14:03Each of which had their own strategy and tactics.
-
14:03 - 14:05One never knew who, you are fighting.
-
14:06 - 14:09And knowing one's enemies,
is the first rule of war. -
14:11 - 14:15With the launch of their newer ships and the
experience their commanders had gained, -
14:15 - 14:17our progress was slowed.
-
14:27 - 14:30It was, frustrating to fight Starfleet.
-
14:31 - 14:37Confident in their Ares cruisers, this brash core
of captains took back three systems in 30 days. -
14:37 - 14:39But the war was not over, yet.
-
14:39 - 14:41Stardate 2244.9
-
14:41 - 14:45Starfleet's next generation heavy
cruiser is behind schedule. -
14:45 - 14:48Admiral Ramirez has himself arrived
to deal with the problem, -
14:48 - 14:51when he receives a coded transmission,
from Starfleet intelligence. -
14:51 - 14:54The Klingons were building something.
-
14:56 - 14:57Something big.
-
14:57 - 15:00We heard these rumors about the D7.
-
15:00 - 15:02We'd proven we could take on the Klingons
-
15:04 - 15:07But the D7, changed all that.
-
15:07 - 15:09D7 would break the back of Starfleet.
-
15:09 - 15:12We had three shipyards,
across the Klingon Empire, build her. -
15:16 - 15:19If the Klingon high council, had listened to Kharn
-
15:19 - 15:21If the high council had listened to me,
-
15:21 - 15:23they would have had D7s at Signus III.
-
15:24 - 15:26The D7 would have been ready for battle.
-
15:26 - 15:29And all our new class Ares ships,
would have been cut to pieces. -
15:30 - 15:34And we would have defeated, the Federation.
-
15:46 - 15:50It had become an arms race,
a war of technology. -
15:50 - 15:55The new class of ship was proving
more complicated than we realized. -
15:57 - 15:58We needed more time.
-
15:58 - 16:03If the Klingons launched them first, we would
have been outmatched and outgunned, again. -
16:04 - 16:07And by now, the Klingons had learned better than to...
-
16:08 - 16:09squander that advantage.
-
16:10 - 16:11I needed another option.
-
16:12 - 16:17I went to my three best captains: Garth, Robau, Trask.
-
16:17 - 16:20And I asked them each for a plan of action.
-
16:20 - 16:24The admiralty had three different plans.
The first one, wasn't worth spit. -
16:25 - 16:29The second one, was a good plan, solid plan.
-
16:29 - 16:31But the third, was Garth's!
-
16:31 - 16:36Garth asked me, out of the blue, if we could have a drink?
-
16:36 - 16:39That's when I told her,
I had an idea for a battle plan. -
16:39 - 16:45My first reaction, let me just say this,
I was really glad we were drinking. -
16:45 - 16:47Garth and Sonya came into my quarters.
-
16:47 - 16:50I showed him a rough outline of my
plan and I said "What do you think?" -
16:52 - 16:53Sam sat there.
-
16:53 - 16:56He looked at it, and looked at it,
and then he looked at me. -
16:57 - 16:58And he said:
-
16:58 - 17:01100 percent insanity.
-
17:01 - 17:03A bloodbath, waiting to happen.
-
17:04 - 17:06That was Axanar.
-
17:07 - 17:12Axanar, its capture would put the Klingons
within striking distance of Andoria, -
17:13 - 17:16Tellar Prime, Vulcan and Terra.
-
17:17 - 17:19It is the heart of Federation space.
-
17:19 - 17:23Further, Kharn's spies discovered that
Starfleet's next generation heavy cruiser, -
17:23 - 17:25was being built in orbit over Axanar.
-
17:25 - 17:29This is his chance to destroy Starfleet's
only match for the D7. -
17:29 - 17:34Garth of Izar knows Axanar is a target,
that Kharn cannot refuse. -
17:34 - 17:37When Garth first presented his plan,
-
17:37 - 17:39to battle the Klingons on Axanar.
-
17:40 - 17:43My first thought was...
-
17:44 - 17:45how far he'd come.
-
17:45 - 17:49I mean he was always an extraordinary
explorer before the war. -
17:50 - 17:56But I knew, in his heart, he was first a soldier.
-
17:56 - 17:58We didn't sign up to be warriors.
-
17:58 - 18:00That's not what Starfleet's about.
-
18:00 - 18:03We proved that we could do, what we
needed to do, to defend the Federation. -
18:04 - 18:06I'm proud of everyone who I served with,
-
18:08 - 18:10Especially those that didn't make it back.
-
18:11 - 18:13So I signed off, on the plan.
-
18:13 - 18:16To end conflict with one final battle.
-
18:18 - 18:21To end it at Axanar.
-
18:21 - 18:24D7 was the ultimate expression of the Klingon warship.
-
18:26 - 18:29Technologically superior to anything in the quadrant.
-
18:31 - 18:36We would launch her and devastate,
the Federation fleet. -
18:36 - 18:41Stardate 2245.1, the D7 enters the war!

Axanar is the independent Star Trek film which proves that a feature-quality Star Trek film can be made on a small budget.
Our 21-minute short film, Prelude to Axanar, premiered Saturday, July 26th, 2014, at San Diego Comic Con and features Richard Hatch, Tony Todd, Kate Vernon, JG Hertzler and Gary Graham, who reprises his role of Soval from "Enterprise". The makeup was done by Academy Award winner Kevin Haney and Star Trek veteran Brad Look and Make Up Effects Lab. Top that off with the amazing visual effects of Tobias Richter and The Light Works, and sound by Academy Award winner Frank Serafine, and the result is Prelude to Axanar: something unlike anything you have ever seen before. We have our loyal donors to thank for this!
