President Obama Speaks on the Death of Nelson Mandela - captioned

  • 0:02 - 0:09
At his trial in 1964, Nelson Mandela closed
his statement from the dock saying,
  • 0:10 - 0:17
"I have fought against white domination, and
I have fought against black domination.
  • 0:18 - 0:23
I have cherished the ideal of a democratic
    and free society
  • 0:23 - 0:29
in which all persons live together in harmony
    and with equal opportunities.
  • 0:29 - 0:36
It is an ideal which I hope to live for and
to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal
  • 0:36 - 0:40
for which I am prepared to die."
  • 0:40 - 0:47
And Nelson Mandela lived for that ideal, and
    he made it real.
  • 0:47 - 0:51
He achieved more than could be expected of
    any man.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    Today, he has gone home.
  • 0:53 - 0:58
And we have lost one of the most influential,
    courageous,
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    and profoundly good human beings
  • 1:00 - 1:04
that any of us will share time with on this
    Earth.
  • 1:04 - 1:10
He no longer belongs to us -- he belongs to
    the ages.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
Through his fierce dignity and unbending will
  • 1:12 - 1:17
to sacrifice his own freedom for the freedom
    of others,
  • 1:17 - 1:22
Madiba transformed South Africa -- and moved
    all of us.
  • 1:22 - 1:27
His journey from a prisoner to a President
    embodied the promise that
  • 1:27 - 1:33
human beings -- and countries -- can change
    for the better.
  • 1:33 - 1:36
    His commitment to transfer power
  • 1:36 - 1:37
and reconcile with those who jailed him
  • 1:37 - 1:43
set an example that all humanity should aspire
    to,
  • 1:43 - 1:46
whether in the lives of nations or our own
    personal lives.
  • 1:46 - 1:51
And the fact that he did it all with grace
    and good humor,
  • 1:51 - 1:54
and an ability to acknowledge his own imperfections,
  • 1:54 - 1:58
only makes the man that much more remarkable.
  • 1:58 - 1:58
    As he once said,
  • 1:58 - 2:05
"I am not a saint, unless you think of a saint
as a sinner who keeps on trying."
  • 2:08 - 2:09
I am one of the countless millions
  • 2:09 - 2:13
who drew inspiration from Nelson Mandela's
    life.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    My very first political action,
  • 2:16 - 2:23
the first thing I ever did that involved an
issue or a policy or politics,
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    was a protest against apartheid.
  • 2:26 - 2:32
I studied his words and his writings.
  • 2:32 - 2:35
The day that he was released from prison
  • 2:35 - 2:37
gave me a sense of what human beings can do
  • 2:37 - 2:41
when they're guided by their hopes and not
    by their fears.
  • 2:41 - 2:44
And like so many around the globe, I cannot
    fully imagine my own life
  • 2:44 - 2:49
without the example that Nelson Mandela set,
  • 2:49 - 2:55
and so long as I live I will do what I can
    to learn from him.
  • 2:55 - 2:59
To Graça Machel and his family,
  • 2:59 - 3:04
Michelle and I extend our deepest sympathy
    and gratitude
  • 3:04 - 3:08
for sharing this extraordinary man with us.
  • 3:08 - 3:13
His life's work meant long days away from
those who loved him the most.
  • 3:13 - 3:16
And I only hope that the time spent with him
    these last few weeks
  • 3:16 - 3:20
brought peace and comfort to his family.
  • 3:20 - 3:22
To the people of South Africa,
  • 3:22 - 3:28
we draw strength from the example of renewal,
    and reconciliation, and resilience
  • 3:28 - 3:30
    that you made real.
  • 3:30 - 3:37
A free South Africa at peace with itself -- that's
    an example to the world,
  • 3:37 - 3:44
and that's Madiba's legacy to the nation he
    loved.
  • 3:44 - 3:49
We will not likely see the likes of Nelson
    Mandela again.
  • 3:49 - 3:56
So it falls to us as best we can to forward
    the example that he set:
  • 3:56 - 3:59
to make decisions guided not by hate, but
    by love;
  • 3:59 - 4:03
to never discount the difference that one
    person can make;
  • 4:03 - 4:09
to strive for a future that is worthy of his
    sacrifice.
  • 4:09 - 4:16
For now, let us pause and give thanks for
the fact that Nelson Mandela lived --
  • 4:16 - 4:23
a man who took history in his hands, and bent
the arc of the moral universe toward justice.
  • 4:24 - 4:27
May God Bless his memory and keep him in peace.
