Relaxation Technique #5: Guided Imagery

  • 0:09 - 0:13
Hi, my name is Rachel, I'm a wellbeing
practitioner for the Counsel and Health
  • 0:13 - 0:17
and Wellbeing Service, I'm here to talk
to you today about relaxation techniques.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    [MUSIC]
  • 0:20 - 0:21
    With visualizations,
  • 0:21 - 0:25
    it's really about experiencing
a picture of somewhere a safe place or
  • 0:25 - 0:29
somewhere that you'd like to be, somewhere
that's calming and relaxing to you.
  • 0:29 - 0:33
That could be different to anybody,
so it could be a beach,
  • 0:33 - 0:37
it could be a bedroom, it could be
a forest, it could be anywhere.
  • 0:37 - 0:42
So what I'd like to do is take you through
very short kind of quick guided imagery
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    exercise.
  • 0:43 - 0:46
And after doing this, it might be worth
having a little look, perhaps on YouTube.
  • 0:46 - 0:51
But it's quite a lot of visualization
scripts that you can look through before
  • 0:51 - 0:54
you can find one that really
fits with you and works for you.
  • 0:54 - 1:00
Imagine a place where you feel calm,
    peaceful and safe.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
It may be a place you've been to before.
  • 1:03 - 1:11
Somewhere you've dreamt about going to, or
maybe somewhere you've seen a picture of.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
Take a moment and go to this place.
  • 1:17 - 1:21
Look around you, what can you see?
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    Who is in this place?
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    Are you by yourself?
  • 1:31 - 1:33
Are there other people around you?
  • 1:36 - 1:40
Focus on the colors in your peaceful,
    safe place.
  • 1:44 - 1:51
And take a moment to take the colors in.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
    And let yourself relax
    as you look around you.
  • 1:58 - 2:03
Now, notice the sounds that are around
    you, or perhaps the silence.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
Think about any smells you notice there.
  • 2:13 - 2:17
Then focus on any skin sensations.
  • 2:19 - 2:24
It could be the feel of sand on your toes,
    the wind in your hair,
  • 2:24 - 2:28
or any other movement that you can feel.
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    Notice what you can touch.
  • 2:34 - 2:38
While you're in your peaceful and
    safe place,
  • 2:38 - 2:41
take a snapshot image of this place.
  • 2:43 - 2:48
So you can bring this image back
anytime that you need to feel relaxed.
  • 2:52 - 2:55
You can choose to stay there for
    a little while,
  • 2:55 - 2:59
    just enjoying the peacefulness and
    the calmness.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
And you can leave whenever you want to.
  • 3:06 - 3:13
When you're ready, open your eyes and
become aware of where you are now.
  • 3:13 - 3:16
Okay, so today I've given you
    some relaxation techniques,
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    everybody's different.
  • 3:18 - 3:22
So pick one that you really feel suits
you, and perhaps just try with that one,
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    rather than feeling like
you need to try them all.
  • 3:24 - 3:28
And practice for a little bit and
see if you find that it helps and
  • 3:28 - 3:30
helps to reduce that tension and
    reduce that stress.
  • 3:30 - 3:32
