0:07 - 0:10Maud Sisley was born in 1851,
in Kent, England. -
0:11 - 0:12After her father died,

0:12 - 0:14her family went to the United States

0:14 - 0:17where they learned about
the Adventist message. -
0:18 - 0:21A visit by James and Ellen White
convinced them -
0:21 - 0:24to relocate to church headquarters
at Battle Creek, Michigan. -
0:25 - 0:27Maud was an Adventist member
for 10 years -
0:27 - 0:29when she was called to serve
as a missionary. -
0:30 - 0:33In 1877, she left for Europe

0:33 - 0:36where she eventually served
in Switzerland and England. -
0:37 - 0:38After several years in Europe,

0:38 - 0:40Maud returned to the United States
-
0:40 - 0:41in time to attend
-
0:41 - 0:44the second annual session
of the General Sabbath School Association -
0:45 - 0:46held in Battle Creek, Michigan.

0:47 - 0:51Here she met another participant,
the widower Charles L. Boyd. -
0:52 - 0:55The couple wed in 1879
and had two daughters. -
0:56 - 0:59The Boyds went as part of the first group
of Adventist missionaries -
0:59 - 1:00to Cape Town, South Africa.

1:01 - 1:03Tragically, their youngest daughter,
Ethel, -
1:03 - 1:05died at age three and a half in Africa.

1:05 - 1:08The family remained in Africa
for about four years -
1:08 - 1:10before returning to the United States.

1:10 - 1:12They reached Battle Creek
in time to attend -
1:12 - 1:14the 1891 General Conference Session.

1:15 - 1:17At this General Conference Session,
-
1:18 - 1:21Charles was asked to become president
of the Tennessee River Conference, -
1:21 - 1:23located in Nashville, Tennessee.

1:24 - 1:26The Boyds were early workers
in the American South, -
1:26 - 1:28striving to break down racial barriers
-
1:28 - 1:30in response to Ellen White’s call
to do so. -
1:31 - 1:34They created a church that allowed
both black and white members -
1:34 - 1:35to worship together.

1:36 - 1:40In 1898 she and Charles were in Asheville,
North Carolina, when Charles died. -
1:41 - 1:44After his death, Ellen White invited
Maud and her family to Australia -
1:45 - 1:47to assist with the newly formed
Avondale School. -
1:48 - 1:50Maud was “highly respected as a teacher.”

1:51 - 1:52She spent nine years there.
-
1:53 - 1:55Her daughter, Ella,
went as a missionary to Tonga. -
1:56 - 1:59When her sister fell ill,
Maud returned to Massachusetts -
1:59 - 2:02to be closer to her
while continuing to conduct Bible work. -
2:03 - 2:05During the last 17 years of her life,
-
2:05 - 2:09she served as a Bible teacher
at the Loma Linda and Glendale Sanitariums -
2:09 - 2:11in California.

2:12 - 2:15She spent one school year teaching
at Oakwood Junior College in Alabama. -
2:16 - 2:18After her sister died,
she returned to Australia -
2:18 - 2:20to live with her daughter, Ella.

2:20 - 2:22Here she died in 1937
-
2:23 - 2:24and was buried next to her mother
-
2:24 - 2:28in the Avondale Adventist Cemetery
in Cooranbong, New South Wales. -
2:28 - 2:31Maud Sisley Boyd spent her life
in service to others, -
2:31 - 2:34and her legacy lives on to this day.
