Stay Tuned: TV's Unforgettable Moments - I Love Lucy "The Vitameatavegamin Episode" (1951)
-
0:01 - 0:05They say nothing lasts forever,
especially on television, -
0:05 - 0:07but "I Love Lucy" just might.
-
0:07 - 0:12The Lucy Ricardo Show,
da-da-da-da. -
0:12 - 0:16"I Love Lucy" actually started
out as a radio program in 1948 -
0:16 - 0:18called "My Favorite Husband."
-
0:18 - 0:20It starred Lucille Ball
with actor Dick Denning -
0:20 - 0:22playing her husband,
-
0:22 - 0:24but when CBC decided
to take the show -
0:24 - 0:26to television in October 1951,
-
0:27 - 0:31Lucy insisted on brining on her
real life husband, Desi Arnaz. -
0:31 - 0:35(Bob) She said no, I will only do it
with my husband and we all said -
0:35 - 0:36huh, Desi what,
-
0:36 - 0:39he's on the road playing
Bubba-what? -
0:39 - 0:41We've never heard of him,
but thank God she insisted. -
0:41 - 0:44The network worried that America
might not accept -
0:44 - 0:46this so-called mixed
raced marriage, -
0:46 - 0:49but Lucy and Desi turned
their union into -
0:49 - 0:52a groundbreaking comedy
that was sometimes sweet, -
0:52 - 0:53sometimes salsa.
-
0:53 - 0:56[speaking Spanish]
-
0:56 - 1:00Never mind. Never mind.
I know what you are talking about. -
1:00 - 1:03Week after week Desi,
Vivian, Vance, -
1:03 - 1:07and Bill Frawley took turns as
Lucy's longsuffering foils, -
1:07 - 1:09but it was up to the
show's writing team, -
1:09 - 1:12Bob Carroll, Junior
and Madelyn Pugh Davis -
1:12 - 1:16to find situations that
un-throw Lucy's comic genius. -
1:16 - 1:20She wanted to rehearse and
rehearse and get it right -
1:20 - 1:22and then she could start
having fun with it. -
1:22 - 1:25Carroll and Davis devised
Lucy's demanding routines. -
1:25 - 1:29They sent them out and then
wrote detailed directions -
1:29 - 1:31into each script which Lucy
followed to the letter. -
1:31 - 1:35People would ask us if she
improvised a lot -
1:35 - 1:38and honestly she really didn't.
-
1:38 - 1:39Everything was written.
-
1:39 - 1:42She would add to and
get wonderful ideas, -
1:42 - 1:44but this was like a blueprint,
-
1:44 - 1:50an exact blueprint for what
she is going to do in -
1:50 - 1:53the physical scene and she was
of course brilliant at it. -
1:53 - 1:56One of Lucy's classic moments
came in this episode -
1:56 - 2:00that first aired on May 5, 1952.
-
2:01 - 2:04Lucy has finagled her way onto
Ricky's television special by -
2:04 - 2:08getting a job as the commercial
pitch girl for a strange tasting -
2:08 - 2:11pick-me-up called
Vitameatavegamin. -
2:11 - 2:14The answers to all your problems
is in this little bottle, -
2:14 - 2:16Vitameatavegamin.
-
2:16 - 2:18Vitameatavegamin contains
vitamins, -
2:18 - 2:21meat, vegetables and minerals.
-
2:21 - 2:25Yes, with Vitameatavegamin you
can spoon your way to health. -
2:25 - 2:27It took us a day and
half to get that name. -
2:27 - 2:29To get Vitameatavegamin.
-
2:29 - 2:32I made a couple notes
this morning. -
2:32 - 2:35I think we probably went this
way like minavegavitamin, -
2:35 - 2:37meataminavegamost,
-
2:37 - 2:42vegavitameat and we probably said
how about Vitameatavegamin -
2:42 - 2:43and that sounded good.
-
2:43 - 2:46Vitameatavegamin turns out to be
a remarkable brew that -
2:46 - 2:51contains vitamins, mineral,
meat, and 23% alcohol. -
2:51 - 3:01[Laughter]
-
3:01 - 3:03(Dick) But the more Lucy drinks,
-
3:03 - 3:06the drunker and the
funnier she gets. -
3:06 - 3:09Well, I'm your
Vita Vegi bad girl. -
3:12 - 3:15Are your tired and
rundown and listless? -
3:17 - 3:18Do you pop out at parties?
-
3:22 - 3:24Are you unpoopular?
-
3:27 - 3:30(Dick) By the time she is done
testing Vitameatavegamin, -
3:30 - 3:33Lucy is nearly on the
floor and so are we. -
3:33 - 3:51[Laughter]
-
3:51 - 3:54It's so tasty too.
-
3:55 - 3:58(Madelyn ) Her timing is brilliant.
-
3:58 - 4:01You know, people say how come
it lasted so long and -
4:01 - 4:04(Bob) That's why.
(Madelyn) Desi said once, -
4:04 - 4:07he said - somebody said what do
you think, you know, -
4:07 - 4:08why is it lasting so
long and he said, -
4:08 - 4:14well I think you give about 90%
of the credit to Lucy -
4:14 - 4:16and the rest of us can
take the other 10%. -
4:16 - 4:17(Bob) Pretty true.
-
4:18 - 4:20Millions of "I Love Lucy"
fans grew to love -
4:20 - 4:23the flavor Vitameatavegamin.
-
4:23 - 4:26Fifty years later it was
voted by her fans as -
4:26 - 4:29the most popular Lucy
episode of all. -
4:29 - 4:31Proof that when it
comes to comedy, -
4:31 - 4:33"I Love Lucy's" taste is timeless.
