Stay Tuned: TV's Unforgettable Moments - I Love Lucy "The Vitameatavegamin Episode" (1951)

  • 0:01 - 0:05
    They say nothing lasts forever,
    especially on television,
  • 0:05 - 0:07
but "I Love Lucy" just might.
  • 0:07 - 0:12
    The Lucy Ricardo Show,
    da-da-da-da.
  • 0:12 - 0:16
    "I Love Lucy" actually started
out as a radio program in 1948
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    called "My Favorite Husband."
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    It starred Lucille Ball
    with actor Dick Denning
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    playing her husband,
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    but when CBC decided
    to take the show
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    to television in October 1951,
  • 0:27 - 0:31
Lucy insisted on brining on her
    real life husband, Desi Arnaz.
  • 0:31 - 0:35
(Bob) She said no, I will only do it
with my husband and we all said
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    huh, Desi what,
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    he's on the road playing
    Bubba-what?
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    We've never heard of him,
    but thank God she insisted.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    The network worried that America
    might not accept
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    this so-called mixed
    raced marriage,
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    but Lucy and Desi turned
    their union into
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    a groundbreaking comedy
    that was sometimes sweet,
  • 0:52 - 0:53
    sometimes salsa.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    [speaking Spanish]
  • 0:56 - 1:00
    Never mind. Never mind.
I know what you are talking about.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    Week after week Desi,
    Vivian, Vance,
  • 1:03 - 1:07
and Bill Frawley took turns as
    Lucy's longsuffering foils,
  • 1:07 - 1:09
but it was up to the
    show's writing team,
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    Bob Carroll, Junior
    and Madelyn Pugh Davis
  • 1:12 - 1:16
    to find situations that
    un-throw Lucy's comic genius.
  • 1:16 - 1:20
    She wanted to rehearse and
    rehearse and get it right
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    and then she could start
    having fun with it.
  • 1:22 - 1:25
    Carroll and Davis devised
    Lucy's demanding routines.
  • 1:25 - 1:29
They sent them out and then
    wrote detailed directions
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    into each script which Lucy
    followed to the letter.
  • 1:31 - 1:35
People would ask us if she
    improvised a lot
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    and honestly she really didn't.
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    Everything was written.
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    She would add to and
    get wonderful ideas,
  • 1:42 - 1:44
but this was like a blueprint,
  • 1:44 - 1:50
    an exact blueprint for what
she is going to do in
  • 1:50 - 1:53
the physical scene and she was
    of course brilliant at it.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    One of Lucy's classic moments
    came in this episode
  • 1:56 - 2:00
that first aired on May 5, 1952.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
Lucy has finagled her way onto
    Ricky's television special by
  • 2:04 - 2:08
getting a job as the commercial
pitch girl for a strange tasting
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    pick-me-up called
    Vitameatavegamin.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
The answers to all your problems
    is in this little bottle,
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    Vitameatavegamin.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    Vitameatavegamin contains
    vitamins,
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    meat, vegetables and minerals.
  • 2:21 - 2:25
    Yes, with Vitameatavegamin you
can spoon your way to health.
  • 2:25 - 2:27
It took us a day and
    half to get that name.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    To get Vitameatavegamin.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    I made a couple notes
    this morning.
  • 2:32 - 2:35
I think we probably went this
    way like minavegavitamin,
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    meataminavegamost,
  • 2:37 - 2:42
    vegavitameat and we probably said
    how about Vitameatavegamin
  • 2:42 - 2:43
    and that sounded good.
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    Vitameatavegamin turns out to be
    a remarkable brew that
  • 2:46 - 2:51
    contains vitamins, mineral,
    meat, and 23% alcohol.
  • 2:51 - 3:01
    [Laughter]
  • 3:01 - 3:03
(Dick) But the more Lucy drinks,
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    the drunker and the
    funnier she gets.
  • 3:06 - 3:09
    Well, I'm your
    Vita Vegi bad girl.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    Are your tired and
    rundown and listless?
  • 3:17 - 3:18
Do you pop out at parties?
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    Are you unpoopular?
  • 3:27 - 3:30
(Dick) By the time she is done
    testing Vitameatavegamin,
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    Lucy is nearly on the
    floor and so are we.
  • 3:33 - 3:51
    [Laughter]
  • 3:51 - 3:54
    It's so tasty too.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
(Madelyn ) Her timing is brilliant.
  • 3:58 - 4:01
You know, people say how come
    it lasted so long and
  • 4:01 - 4:04
    (Bob) That's why.
    (Madelyn) Desi said once,
  • 4:04 - 4:07
he said - somebody said what do
    you think, you know,
  • 4:07 - 4:08
    why is it lasting so
    long and he said,
  • 4:08 - 4:14
well I think you give about 90%
    of the credit to Lucy
  • 4:14 - 4:16
and the rest of us can
    take the other 10%.
  • 4:16 - 4:17
    (Bob) Pretty true.
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    Millions of "I Love Lucy"
    fans grew to love
  • 4:20 - 4:23
    the flavor Vitameatavegamin.
  • 4:23 - 4:26
    Fifty years later it was
    voted by her fans as
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    the most popular Lucy
    episode of all.
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    Proof that when it
    comes to comedy,
  • 4:31 - 4:33
"I Love Lucy's" taste is timeless.
