Dan Reynolds - “Believer” and the Plight of LGBTQ Mormons | The Daily Show

  • 0:00 - 0:04
    Please welcome
    Dan Reynolds.
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    (cheering and applause)
  • 0:18 - 0:19
    -Welcome.
    -Thank you.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    Uh, first of all,
    congratulations.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    Last night you played
    Madison Square Garden.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    -Yeah. -Are you still
    coming off of that buzz?
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    Yeah?
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    Is that, like,
    one of those buzzes
  • 0:28 - 0:29
    that just never goes away,
    or do you...
  • 0:29 - 0:30
    You're just like,
"Yeah, on to the next one."
  • 0:30 - 0:32
No, I think it was something
    I've dreamt about
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    -since I was really little.
    -Yeah.
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    And my mom and dad
    came out and...
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    So, it was, uh,
    it was nerve-racking,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
but it was also a moment that
I think was a little surreal,
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    where I thought, "Okay,
    I think we've done something."
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    -You know? Yeah.
    -I think you've done something.
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    -I think you've done more
    than something, man. -Oh.
  • 0:45 - 0:46
    -Congratulations on that. Um...
    -Thank you.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    (cheering and applause)
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    And-and congratulations
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    on this documentary
    that's coming out.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    This-this is
    a really insightful story
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    that you've chosen to tell:
  • 0:57 - 0:59
the story of the Mormon Church
  • 0:59 - 1:03
    and how they've dealt
    with the LGBT community.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
This is a really powerful story.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
Why did you choose to tell it?
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    So, I grew up Mormon.
    Super conservative family.
  • 1:10 - 1:11
    Eight boys, one girl.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    Um, in middle school,
  • 1:13 - 1:17
one of the first friends I made
    was gay and Mormon.
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    And I saw...
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    It was the first time
    that I really felt
  • 1:20 - 1:22
like what I was being taught
    at church
  • 1:22 - 1:25
-didn't sit right in my heart.
    -Right.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
Um, and I watched the conflict
that he had every single day.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
Um, not just bullying at school,
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    but also just feeling
    like he couldn't come out.
  • 1:32 - 1:33
He'd go to dances with girls.
  • 1:33 - 1:36
We wouldn't even talk about it
    because it was so...
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    he felt so much shame.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    Um, so, flash forward.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    (clears throat) High school.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    Had a lot of friends.
    Lost two to suicide.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    Um, went to BYU.
  • 1:46 - 1:48
Got kicked out of BYU myself
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    for having sex
    with my girlfriend,
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    which was a shaming experience
    for me.
  • 1:53 - 1:54
    -I felt so much...
It was the first time -Right.
  • 1:54 - 1:57
    that I really spiraled
    into this place of depression.
  • 1:57 - 2:02
That, on a very small scale,
is what our LGBTQ youth feel
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    every single day
    in orthodox religion, which is,
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    they are told
    something that is beautiful,
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    something that should be
    celebrated--
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    their sexuality,
    which is unchangeable--
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    is sinful, and that
they should feel bad about it.
  • 2:13 - 2:14
    And then we expect them
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    to have healthy lives,
    and they don't.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    -They have high suicide rates.
    -Right.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    They have high depression,
    anxiety.
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    Um, so religious guilt is
    so prevalent in their lives.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
You look at Utah right now.
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    It has one
    of the highest suicide rates
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    in the nation, very Mormon.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    Um, and LGBTQ youth are
    eight times more likely
  • 2:32 - 2:33
    to take their life
    when not accepted
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    in their home or community.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    So, it kind of...
    I don't know.
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    -I just feel like
    enough is enough. -Right.
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    And I've been put
in this position as a Mormon
  • 2:41 - 2:44
    who is famous,
and there's not many of us.
  • 2:44 - 2:47
    It's, like, Donnie and Marie.
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    -You know?
    -(laughter)
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    So, I don't know.
I just feel like I hope
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    that I can at least
    start a conversation.
  • 2:54 - 2:57
    I think you... I think
    you really have. I, um...
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    (applause and cheering)
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    I think you've started more
    than a conversation.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    I think
    you've started a movement,
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    because, you know,
    not just the documentary,
  • 3:06 - 3:10
    but LoveLoud is a festival
that you kicked off in Utah.
  • 3:10 - 3:12
A festival where you came out
    playing music,
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    bring people together, uh,
    and as the name suggests,
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    LoveLoud was about being proud,
    and it's one of...
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    One of my favorite moments
    in the documentary is
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    when you come up
    with that name.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
How did you come up with it,
and why was it so inspiring
  • 3:24 - 3:26
for you to use that title?
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    You know, I think
    that most people
  • 3:28 - 3:30
    that I talk to
    who are religious--
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    Mormons, Catholic,
    whatever it is--
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    and who are conflicted
    about this...
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    They say, "You know what?
    I love our LGBTQ youth.
  • 3:38 - 3:39
    I love them."
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    But there's always
    this little dagger
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    behind the back of...
  • 3:43 - 3:45
You know, "I love you, but..."
  • 3:45 - 3:48
    -Right.
    -"I love you if..."
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    You know? And so,
    it's not real love.
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    It's an empty word.
    It doesn't...
  • 3:53 - 3:55
    To our youth
    that I have spoken with--
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    they said, "You know what?
    I would rather you say
  • 3:57 - 4:00
    "you don't love me,
    you don't accept me
  • 4:00 - 4:02
"than open this door and say,
  • 4:02 - 4:03
    "'Look at the bright light
    inside. Come inside,'
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    -but there's tacks
    all over the ground." -Right.
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    It's not healthy for you.
  • 4:07 - 4:10
Um, and so, LoveLoud is about
    talking about
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    what does it mean
    to truly love and accept?
  • 4:12 - 4:15
    It means that you say
    to your child
  • 4:15 - 4:19
    "You are perfect
    the way you are," and-and...
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    (applause and cheering)
  • 4:23 - 4:25
    And I think that
  • 4:25 - 4:27
    until that happens,
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    we're gonna continue to see...
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    The suicide rate has quadrupled
  • 4:31 - 4:34
in Utah over the last six years.
  • 4:34 - 4:35
    And people say,
    "Well, it's the altitude."
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    The altitude's not quadrupling.
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    -(laughter)
    -You know?
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    And so, it's just...
    it's... it's frustrating to me,
  • 4:41 - 4:44
and I get so fired up about it,
'cause I've spent this last year
  • 4:44 - 4:46
    -meeting with all
    these parents... -Right.
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    ...who have lost their children
    to suicide
  • 4:48 - 4:50
    because of religious guilt.
  • 4:50 - 4:52
And I love, I love my faith.
  • 4:52 - 4:53
    I love Mormons.
  • 4:53 - 4:55
    I think Mormons
    are generally good people.
  • 4:55 - 4:58
    The amount of bigots
    is very small.
  • 4:58 - 5:00
    But the amount of people
who just kind of turn their head
  • 5:00 - 5:02
    -and say "This doesn't affect
me" is large. -That is a...
  • 5:02 - 5:04
    that is a difficult decision
    and a conversation to have.
  • 5:04 - 5:06
    I mean, I know I grew up
    in a very religious household,
  • 5:06 - 5:10
    uh, you know, not dissimilar
but not the same as Mormonism.
  • 5:10 - 5:12
    But it is
    a difficult conversation
  • 5:12 - 5:13
    to have with yourself,
  • 5:13 - 5:14
    where you have to ask
  • 5:14 - 5:17
    where the "limits"
    of the religion end
  • 5:17 - 5:19
    and where your compassion
    begins,
  • 5:19 - 5:21
    going beyond
    what you've been taught.
  • 5:21 - 5:23
    When you look at Mormonism
    as it stands,
  • 5:23 - 5:27
do you think that the church
is in a position to pivot?
  • 5:27 - 5:29
Or do you think it's a bit naive
    for people to say,
  • 5:29 - 5:33
"I want to be Mormon and a
    member of the LGBTQ community"?
  • 5:33 - 5:34
    That's a really good question.
  • 5:34 - 5:36
    I think, to begin with,
  • 5:36 - 5:38
    most people from the outside
    would just say,
  • 5:38 - 5:39
    "Dan, this is easy.
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    "Leave Mormonism.
  • 5:41 - 5:43
    -Tell all these kids
    to leave Mormonism." -Right.
  • 5:43 - 5:45
    It's not that simple.
  • 5:45 - 5:46
    Because you could be could...
    putting a kid
  • 5:46 - 5:49
in a absolute more at risk
    situation by saying
  • 5:50 - 5:51
    leave your family
    or leave this religion
  • 5:52 - 5:53
    that they might believe in.
  • 5:53 - 5:54
    -Right. -It might be
    their whole foundation.
  • 5:54 - 5:57
So you can't just drag them out
    of the religion.
  • 5:57 - 5:59
    So, until they're old enough
    to make that decision
  • 5:59 - 6:02
and they're in a safe space
to do that if they want to,
  • 6:02 - 6:05
you just need to make it
    a better place for them.
  • 6:05 - 6:06
    -Right. -The leaders
    aren't gonna change.
  • 6:06 - 6:09
    I hope they change,
but I can't speak for them.
  • 6:09 - 6:11
    I don't know that the doctrine's
    ever gonna change.
  • 6:11 - 6:13
    But if it never changes,
  • 6:13 - 6:14
then we must change the people.
  • 6:14 - 6:18
    We must change the culture
    within religion so that...
  • 6:18 - 6:22
You know, it's like... I asked
a-a parent this the other day
  • 6:22 - 6:23
    who's very conservative
    and Mormon.
  • 6:23 - 6:26
    I said,
    "I know you believe this,
  • 6:26 - 6:28
    "but let me just say
    this statistic.
  • 6:28 - 6:30
"If your child comes to you
    and says,
  • 6:30 - 6:32
    "'Mom, I am gay,'
  • 6:32 - 6:33
    "in that moment,
    if you don't say,
  • 6:33 - 6:35
"'I accept you and love you
  • 6:35 - 6:37
    "'and that's beautiful
    and it's wonderful,'
  • 6:37 - 6:39
    "if you don't say that,
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    "they're not accepted
    in the home or household,
  • 6:41 - 6:43
    they're eight times
    more likely to commit suicide."
  • 6:43 - 6:46
    So with that statistic,
  • 6:46 - 6:48
do you s... At that moment,
  • 6:48 - 6:50
the parent has to accept them,
  • 6:50 - 6:51
    even if the religion's there,
  • 6:51 - 6:53
    the Bible, all those things
    they believe in.
  • 6:53 - 6:56
But are you gonna put your child
    eight times more at risk
  • 6:56 - 6:57
    because of that?
  • 6:57 - 7:00
And I hope the answer's no.
  • 7:00 - 7:02
    Regardless
    of what your faith is,
  • 7:02 - 7:03
    regardless
    of what your belief is,
  • 7:03 - 7:05
    the data is just there.
  • 7:05 - 7:06
    And it's overwhelming.
  • 7:06 - 7:08
    So I think
we just don't have a choice.
  • 7:08 - 7:11
-We don't have a choice, and...
    -(cheering and applause)
  • 7:11 - 7:14
    I will honestly say,
    um, this documentary
  • 7:14 - 7:19
is one of the most eye-opening
    exposes I've ever seen.
  • 7:19 - 7:20
    It's done with heart,
    it's done with compassion.
  • 7:20 - 7:23
-Thank you so much for being on
the show. -Thanks for having me.
  • 7:23 - 7:24
An honor to have you here.
  • 7:24 - 7:27
Believer airs on HBO June 25.
  • 7:32 - 7:33
    An amazing man.
    Dan Reynolds, everybody.
