Exploring Vintage Toys | ASMR (soft spoken)

  • 0:38 - 0:39
    Good evening,
  • 0:40 - 0:44
and thank you for joining me tonight.
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    This video is something
  • 0:51 - 0:55
I've had in mind for months
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    and the idea originally came
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    when I stumbled upon
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    my mother's childhood cubes.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    And I thought:
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    "how tingly would that be!"
  • 1:09 - 1:13
So I started to gather vintage toys
  • 1:13 - 1:16
in hope I could make a video one day.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
Some of the toys we're going
  • 1:20 - 1:21
    to discover tonight
  • 1:21 - 1:25
have been in my family for decades
  • 1:25 - 1:29
and others were found in garage sales
  • 1:29 - 1:32
    or on second hand websites.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
So, let's have a look at the first one:
  • 1:38 - 1:41
    my mother's wooden cubes.
  • 1:54 - 1:57
    These are from the 50s,
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    maybe slightly older
  • 2:00 - 2:04
depending on when they were actually made.
  • 2:17 - 2:23
The cubes are made of a quite light wood
  • 2:26 - 2:30
    maybe pine or poplar?
  • 2:31 - 2:34
I don't think this is oak.
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    And the set looks complete.
  • 2:41 - 2:46
    We've got 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
  • 2:47 - 2:52
    1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    35 cubes,
  • 2:56 - 3:01
so all the letters & numbers.
  • 3:06 - 3:10
    Four different colors, red,
  • 3:12 - 3:13
    green,
  • 3:17 - 3:18
    yellow,
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    and...
  • 3:23 - 3:26
No I think they were 3 only but,
  • 3:28 - 3:32
    this one was green once.
  • 3:38 - 3:40
    Lovely sounds.
  • 3:53 - 3:55
Now let's see if we can get ASMR
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    from these cubes.
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    Literally I mean.
  • 4:00 - 4:05
    So, looking for the a...
  • 4:08 - 4:09
    I can't see it.
  • 4:11 - 4:12
    Here,
  • 4:17 - 4:18
    first one.
  • 4:21 - 4:22
    S...
  • 4:29 - 4:30
    It was close.
  • 4:32 - 4:34
    S,
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    M,
  • 4:46 - 4:49
    and, last one...
  • 4:59 - 5:00
    There it is.
  • 5:05 - 5:08
    A-S-M-R.
  • 5:19 - 5:23
They're in quite good condition, but
  • 5:30 - 5:34
some in better shape than others.
  • 5:36 - 5:40
This one almost looks brand new.
  • 5:50 - 5:52
    And the box is not
  • 5:52 - 5:55
    in very good condition unfortunately.
  • 5:55 - 5:58
    And I believe there was
  • 5:58 - 6:01
some kind of lid on it.
  • 6:06 - 6:10
But my nephews play with them so
  • 6:13 - 6:16
    the story of these cubes
  • 6:16 - 6:18
    is not over yet.
  • 6:24 - 6:25
    Alright.
  • 6:29 - 6:31
    What do we have next...
  • 6:36 - 6:37
    Stamps.
  • 6:40 - 6:44
These are the perfect ASMR items
  • 6:44 - 6:48
I love when other creators use them
  • 6:48 - 6:49
    in their videos.
  • 6:50 - 6:55
So I found 3 boxes in a garage sale,
  • 6:57 - 7:00
they are from the 70s I believe.
  • 7:02 - 7:05
And they were meant for teachers
  • 7:05 - 7:07
    as school supplies.
  • 7:10 - 7:12
Let's have a look at them.
  • 7:22 - 7:24
    We have...
  • 7:25 - 7:26
    Games,
  • 7:30 - 7:31
    toys,
  • 7:35 - 7:38
    and these are animals,
  • 7:40 - 7:44
    yes, domestic animals.
  • 8:00 - 8:05
So these are simple wooden cubes
  • 8:05 - 8:10
with a piece of rubber on it.
  • 8:14 - 8:17
    1, 2, 3, 4, 5,
  • 8:17 - 8:19
    1, 2, 3
  • 8:19 - 8:23
so 15 stamps in each box.
  • 8:43 - 8:45
Oh no not in this one.
  • 8:54 - 8:56
    2 of them are missing.
  • 9:00 - 9:01
    Alright,
  • 9:03 - 9:06
I had to buy an ink pad
  • 9:07 - 9:10
because there was none with the sets
  • 9:11 - 9:13
and if there had been one
  • 9:13 - 9:16
it would probably be totally dry out anyway.
  • 9:29 - 9:35
    So I chose "acorn" color
  • 9:35 - 9:39
    it's a kind of brown/reddish color.
  • 9:52 - 9:55
    I really love lid sounds.
  • 10:01 - 10:04
    Yes, a beautiful brown.
  • 10:07 - 10:11
What are we going to use...
  • 10:14 - 10:17
    Let's try a rabbit.
  • 10:25 - 10:26
    Here we go.
  • 10:49 - 10:51
    That's cute.
  • 10:53 - 10:58
Maybe I didn't choose the right paper for this.
  • 11:00 - 11:02
    Let's try another one.
  • 11:13 - 11:15
    What's this?
  • 11:18 - 11:20
    Let's see.
  • 11:29 - 11:30
    Here we go.
  • 11:39 - 11:43
Someone jumping in a swimming pool I guess.
  • 11:47 - 11:49
    And...
  • 11:50 - 11:52
    From the third box,
  • 11:54 - 11:56
    what do we have?
  • 11:58 - 12:00
    This is a windmill.
  • 12:12 - 12:13
    Alright.
  • 12:24 - 12:25
    Nice.
  • 12:30 - 12:33
    So these are in a
  • 12:33 - 12:35
    perfect condition.
  • 12:38 - 12:41
    Ready for many other decades.
  • 12:56 - 13:00
And the boxes are in good condition as well.
  • 13:04 - 13:05
    Perfect.
  • 13:20 - 13:21
    So, toys...
  • 13:42 - 13:46
And now, let's have a look
  • 13:46 - 13:49
    at an antique doll.
  • 13:49 - 13:52
This was gifted to my grandmother
  • 13:52 - 13:56
by a friend of hers who had it
  • 13:56 - 13:58
    when she was young,
  • 13:58 - 14:00
so it's probably from the beginning
  • 14:00 - 14:02
    of the 20th century.
  • 14:05 - 14:08
    I wasn't sure I would include it
  • 14:08 - 14:10
    in this video because
  • 14:10 - 14:13
    I'm not a doll lover.
  • 14:14 - 14:15
Let me tell you a story.
  • 14:16 - 14:20
As a little girl I had several dolls
  • 14:20 - 14:21
    like most of the girls
  • 14:21 - 14:24
growing in the 80s and 90s.
  • 14:25 - 14:28
When I was about 10 I used to read
  • 14:28 - 14:31
    the R.L Stine books,
  • 14:31 - 14:32
    the "fear street" series,
  • 14:32 - 14:36
I'm pretty sure many of you know about these.
  • 14:37 - 14:41
And there was that story with a malefic puppet
  • 14:41 - 14:43
    that really frightened me.
  • 14:44 - 14:45
    One day,
  • 14:45 - 14:49
shortly after reading this specific book,
  • 14:49 - 14:52
one of the dolls that was in my bedroom
  • 14:52 - 14:55
    moved while I was playing
  • 14:55 - 14:56
    in another corner.
  • 14:57 - 14:59
    Of course it was probably
  • 14:59 - 15:03
her arm that dropped or something
  • 15:03 - 15:05
    but it froze my blood.
  • 15:05 - 15:09
    So I took the doll,
  • 15:09 - 15:12
buried deep in my toys chest
  • 15:12 - 15:15
and never took it out again.
  • 15:16 - 15:21
And since that day I often get the feeling
  • 15:21 - 15:24
that dolls strangely stare at me.
  • 15:25 - 15:28
    But I've seen this one
  • 15:28 - 15:29
    in my grandmother's house
  • 15:29 - 15:31
    since I was born
  • 15:31 - 15:34
and we're in very good terms.
  • 15:38 - 15:39
    Let's examine it.
  • 15:42 - 15:45
The head is made of porcelain
  • 15:47 - 15:49
    which was very common then
  • 15:49 - 15:51
    but also much more expensive
  • 15:51 - 15:54
    than today's plastic dolls.
  • 15:56 - 15:59
Not every family could afford one.
  • 16:04 - 16:07
    The limbs are made of
  • 16:07 - 16:09
    some kind of papier mâché.
  • 16:10 - 16:12
    And unfortunately
  • 16:12 - 16:16
this is easily damaged with time.
  • 16:18 - 16:21
One of the hands is broken.
  • 16:28 - 16:31
    Same for the legs.
  • 16:32 - 16:37
    And the right foot is
  • 16:37 - 16:39
    not in good condition.
  • 16:46 - 16:51
    The clothes are quite modern
  • 16:51 - 16:53
these were made in the 70s
  • 16:55 - 16:57
    with velvet,
  • 17:01 - 17:02
    satin,
  • 17:06 - 17:08
    embroideries,
  • 17:19 - 17:23
a bit of lace at the end of the sleeves.
  • 17:30 - 17:33
And even if made much later
  • 17:33 - 17:35
    these clothes were actually made
  • 17:35 - 17:38
by the same person who gave
  • 17:38 - 17:40
    this doll to my grandmother.
  • 17:47 - 17:49
She died before I was born.
  • 17:52 - 17:56
She was a good seamstress obviously.
  • 17:59 - 18:04
Everything has been made by hand.
  • 18:06 - 18:08
    And it fits perfectly.
  • 18:14 - 18:17
The head is in perfect condition
  • 18:17 - 18:19
    so is the hair.
  • 18:22 - 18:25
I think this is horse hair.
  • 18:28 - 18:30
This is one of the materials
  • 18:30 - 18:32
    used at this time.
  • 18:35 - 18:37
    Flax was another one.
  • 18:47 - 18:48
    Alright.
  • 18:52 - 18:56
Obviously my grandmother stored it properly.
  • 18:59 - 19:03
She must be one century old.
  • 19:10 - 19:11
    Alright.
  • 19:25 - 19:28
    And, what's next...
  • 19:33 - 19:35
This is not old at all,
  • 19:35 - 19:39
probably from the 80s or 90s but
  • 19:40 - 19:42
    it's super cute.
  • 19:43 - 19:46
I found this on a second hand website.
  • 19:50 - 19:54
The next one is an item you may have seen
  • 19:54 - 19:56
    twice in my videos.
  • 20:05 - 20:08
    This is a lotto game,
  • 20:08 - 20:12
and I used it in my French lessons roleplays.
  • 20:15 - 20:17
    But I recently realized that
  • 20:17 - 20:19
I never showed it in the videos
  • 20:19 - 20:22
    I make about my props,
  • 20:22 - 20:24
    and it's a shame because
  • 20:24 - 20:28
    it makes lovely wood sounds.
  • 20:34 - 20:39
    So, better late than never.
  • 20:42 - 20:46
The tokens come with 6 grids.
  • 20:48 - 21:12
    1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
  • 21:15 - 21:19
There were probably 8 at the beginning,
  • 21:19 - 21:23
maybe 2 red and 2 orange ones.
  • 21:30 - 21:34
They are a bit used, but it's quite good.
  • 21:34 - 21:38
My brother and I used to play with this game
  • 21:38 - 21:40
a lot when we were children.
  • 21:41 - 21:45
But it's quite old, maybe from the 50s.
  • 21:50 - 21:52
    Very simple.
  • 22:07 - 22:09
If you don't know how to play with it
  • 22:09 - 22:11
    it's quite simple:
  • 22:12 - 22:15
you would choose 1 or several grids,
  • 22:16 - 22:20
blend all the tokens in a bag
  • 22:21 - 22:24
and draw them one by one.
  • 22:27 - 22:30
The first one to complete his grids
  • 22:30 - 22:32
    was the winner.
  • 22:34 - 22:37
    17.... yes.
  • 22:41 - 22:43
So a pure game of chance,
  • 22:43 - 22:46
    and nothing else.
  • 22:54 - 22:58
Again it's a very light wood.
  • 23:30 - 23:32
    Maybe I could fix that.
  • 23:40 - 23:42
    Here we have a child
  • 23:45 - 23:49
    playing with snow.
  • 23:53 - 23:55
    Making a snow man,
  • 23:55 - 23:58
    with a hat.
  • 24:34 - 24:36
    And finally,
  • 24:45 - 24:51
let's end with something super cozy:
  • 24:59 - 25:01
    an antique cuddly toy.
  • 25:03 - 25:06
    Initially I wanted to borrow
  • 25:06 - 25:08
    my mother's Teddy bear
  • 25:08 - 25:10
but it's such in a poor condition
  • 25:10 - 25:13
    that I don't even think
  • 25:13 - 25:15
it would have survived the journey
  • 25:15 - 25:16
    to my home.
  • 25:17 - 25:20
    So I found this fellow
  • 25:20 - 25:22
    on a second hand website.
  • 25:22 - 25:25
And thought he was very cute.
  • 25:29 - 25:31
Many antique Teddy bears can be
  • 25:31 - 25:33
    a bit frightening but
  • 25:34 - 25:36
    clearly not this one.
  • 25:37 - 25:38
    What do you think?
  • 25:40 - 25:44
I really like how he seems to look at you
  • 25:44 - 25:46
    with a smile.
  • 25:49 - 25:51
    Isn't it lovely?
  • 25:58 - 26:00
    It is from the 50s.
  • 26:01 - 26:05
    And it's stuffed with straw
  • 26:05 - 26:08
like most of the traditionnal Teddy bears
  • 26:08 - 26:11
in the middle of the 20th century.
  • 26:13 - 26:16
So the sound is quite interesting.
  • 26:25 - 26:30
    Let's see the condition.
  • 26:32 - 26:34
    It's used of course,
  • 26:36 - 26:41
    especially the feet & arms.
  • 26:47 - 26:50
    The head looks fine.
  • 26:54 - 26:57
    So are the ears.
  • 27:15 - 27:19
Most of the hair is gone on the legs,
  • 27:22 - 27:23
    same here.
  • 27:43 - 27:46
    I don't know what
  • 27:46 - 27:51
the feet and head are made of
  • 27:52 - 27:55
it's much harder than the rest.
  • 28:00 - 28:03
Maybe there is just more straw inside.
  • 28:05 - 28:09
    The arms are much softer.
  • 28:14 - 28:16
Let's give him a little massage
  • 28:16 - 28:20
so it can spread the straw evenly
  • 28:20 - 28:22
    in all the limbs.
  • 28:31 - 28:33
    Down to the paw...
  • 28:42 - 28:45
    Same on the left side,
  • 28:46 - 28:49
    down to the paw...
  • 29:05 - 29:06
    Seems good.
  • 29:14 - 29:17
    I must be very careful.
  • 29:39 - 29:41
    The ears...
  • 29:43 - 29:45
    These are not stuffed,
  • 29:46 - 29:48
    this is just fabric.
  • 29:53 - 29:56
Probably some kind of thick cotton.
  • 30:03 - 30:04
    Alright.
  • 30:17 - 30:21
I hope you enjoyed this simple video.
  • 30:23 - 30:25
Thank you so much for watching
  • 30:25 - 30:28
and as always we wish you
  • 30:28 - 30:31
    a very good night.
