Ratios as Fractions in Simplest Form

  • 0:00 - 0:05
    Write 15:25 as a fraction
    in simplest form.
  • 0:05 - 0:10
So 15 to 25 is just a ratio,
    and we can write it.
  • 0:10 - 0:14
    So they've given us 15 to 25.
  • 0:14 - 0:21
And you can write this ratio as
    a fraction, as 15 over 25.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
And if we want to put this in
simplest form, we just have to
  • 0:23 - 0:26
think about what is the largest
    number that divides
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    into both 15 and 25?
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    Or what is their greatest
    common factor?
  • 0:31 - 0:33
When you just eyeball it, you
say, well, 5 goes into both of
  • 0:33 - 0:36
them, and I'm pretty sure that's
    the largest number that
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    divides into both, so let's
    divide both by 5.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
If there is a larger number,
then we might be able to see
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    it once we've simplified
    it a little bit more.
  • 0:43 - 0:47
    So let's divide the numerator
and the denominator by 5 and
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    see what we get.
  • 0:48 - 0:53
So now we get 15 divided
by 5 is equal to 3.
  • 0:53 - 1:00
And 25 divided by 5 is equal
to 5, and now we have 3/5.
  • 1:00 - 1:05
    3 and 5 don't share any common
factors greater than 1, so it
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    is in simplest form.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
So we've done what they asked.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
We've written it as a fraction
    in simplest form.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
We could also write this, if
we want to write it in this
  • 1:13 - 1:19
    type of notation, as 3:5.
