-
Not Synced So if I told you that
-
Not Synced this was the face of pure joy,
-
Not Synced would you call me crazy?
-
Not Synced I wouldn't blame you,
-
Not Synced because every time I look
 at this Arctic selfie,

-
Not Synced I shiver just a little bit.
-
Not Synced I want to tell you
a little bit about this photograph.

-
Not Synced I was swimming around
in the Lofoten Islands in Norway,

-
Not Synced just inside the Arctic Circle,
-
Not Synced and the water was hovering
 right at freezing.

-
Not Synced The air? A brisk -10 with windchill,
-
Not Synced and I could literally feel the blood
 trying to leave my hands,

-
Not Synced feet, and face, and rush
 to protect my vital organs.

-
Not Synced It was the coldest I've ever been.
-
Not Synced But even with swollen lips, sunken eyes,
 and cheeks flushed red,

-
Not Synced I have found that this place right here
-
Not Synced is somewhere I can find great joy.
-
Not Synced Now, when it comes to pain,
 psychologist Brock Bastian

-
Not Synced probably said it best when he wrote,
-
Not Synced "Pain is a kind of shortcut
 to mindfulness.

-
Not Synced It makes us suddenly aware
 of everything in the environment.

-
Not Synced It brutally draws us in
-
Not Synced to a virtual sensory
 awareness of the world

-
Not Synced much like meditation."
-
Not Synced If shivering is a form of meditation,
then I would consider myself a monk.

-
Not Synced Now, before we get into the why,
-
Not Synced would anyone ever want to surf
 in freezing cold water?

-
Not Synced I would love to give you
 a little perspective

-
Not Synced on what a day in my life can look like.
-
Not Synced (Music)
-
Not Synced (Video) Chris Burkard: I mean, I know
we were hoping for good waves,

-
Not Synced but I don't think anybody thought
 that was going to happen.

-
Not Synced I can't stop shaking.
-
Not Synced I am so cold.
-
Not Synced (Music)
-
Not Synced (Applause)
-
Not Synced Chris Burkard: So,
 surf photographer, right?

-
Not Synced I don't even know
if it's a real job title, to be honest.

-
Not Synced My parents definitely didn't think so
-
Not Synced when I told them at 19
 I was quitting my job

-
Not Synced to pursue this dream career:
-
Not Synced blue skies, warm tropical beaches,
and a tan that lasts all year long.

-
Not Synced I mean, to me, this was it.
Life could not get any better:

-
Not Synced sweating it out, shooting surfers
 in these exotic tourist destinations.

-
Not Synced But there was just this one problem.
-
Not Synced You see, the more time I spent traveling
 to these exotic locations,

-
Not Synced the less gratifying it seemed to be.
-
Not Synced I set out seeking adventure,
and what I was finding was only routine.

-
Not Synced It was things like Wifi, TV, fine dining,
 and a constant cellular connection

-
Not Synced that to me were all the trappings
 of places heavily touristed

-
Not Synced in and out of the water,
-
Not Synced and it didn't take long
for me to start feeling suffocated.

-
Not Synced I began craving wild, open spaces,
-
Not Synced and so I set out to find the places
 others had written off

-
Not Synced as too cold, too remote,
 and too dangerous to surf,

-
Not Synced and that challenge intrigued me.
-
Not Synced I began this sort of personal crusade
 against the mundane,

-
Not Synced because if there's
 one thing I've realized,

-
Not Synced it's that any career,
-
Not Synced even one as seemingly glamorous
 as surf photography,

-
Not Synced has the danger of becoming monotonous.
-
Not Synced So in my search to break up
 this monotony, I realized something:

-
Not Synced there's only about a third
of the Earth's oceans that are warm,

-
Not Synced and it's really just that thin band
 around the equator.

-
Not Synced So if I was going to find perfect waves,
-
Not Synced it was probably going
 to happen somewhere cold,

-
Not Synced where the seas are notoriously rough,
-
Not Synced and that's exactly where I began to look.
-
Not Synced And it was my first trip to Iceland
-
Not Synced that I felt like I found
exactly what I was looking for.

-
Not Synced I was blown away
by the natural beauty of the landscape,

-
Not Synced but most importantly, I couldn't believe
-
Not Synced we were finding perfect waves
-
Not Synced in such a remote and rugged
 part of the world.

-
Not Synced At one point, we got to the beach
-
Not Synced only to find massive chunks of ice
 had piled on the shoreline.

-
Not Synced They created this barrier
 between us and the surf,

-
Not Synced and we had to weave through this thing
like a maze just to get out into the lineup,

-
Not Synced and once we got there,
we were pushing aside these ice chunks

-
Not Synced trying to get into waves.
-
Not Synced It was an incredible experience,
 one I'll never forget,

-
Not Synced because amidst those harsh conditions,
-
Not Synced I felt like I stumbled onto
one of the last quiet places,

-
Not Synced somewhere that I found a clarity
and a connection with the world

-
Not Synced I knew I would never find
 on a crowded beach.

-
Not Synced I was hooked. I was hooked. (Laughter)
-
Not Synced Cold water was constantly on my mind,
-
Not Synced and from that point on, my career
-
Not Synced focused on these types of harsh
 and unforgiving environments,

-
Not Synced and it took me to places like Russia,
 Norway, Alaska, Iceland, Chile,

-
Not Synced the Faroe Islands,
and a lot of places in between,

-
Not Synced and one of my favorite things
 about these places

-
Not Synced was simply the challenge and
the creativity it took just to get there:

-
Not Synced hours, days, weeks spent on Google Earth
-
Not Synced trying to pinpoint any remote
 stretch of beach or reef

-
Not Synced we could actually get to.
-
Not Synced And once we got there,
-
Not Synced the vehicles were just as creative:
-
Not Synced snowmobiles, six-wheel
 Soviet troop carriers,

-
Not Synced and a couple of super-sketchy
 helicopter flights.

-
Not Synced (Laughter)
-
Not Synced Helicopters really scare me, by the way.
-
Not Synced There was this one particularly
 bumpy boat ride

-
Not Synced up the coast of Vancouver Island
to this kind of remote surf spot,

-
Not Synced where we ended up watching
 helplessly from the water

-
Not Synced as bears ravaged our camp site.
-
Not Synced They walked off with our food
 and bits of our tent,

-
Not Synced clearly letting us know that we
were at the bottom of the food chain

-
Not Synced and that this was their spot, not ours.
-
Not Synced But to me, that trip
-
Not Synced was a testament to the wildness
I traded for those touristy beaches.

-
Not Synced Now, it wasn't until I traveled to Norway
-
Not Synced -- (Laughter) --
-
Not Synced that I really learned
 to appreciate the cold.

-
Not Synced So this is the place
-
Not Synced where some of the largest,
the most violent storms in the world

-
Not Synced send huge waves smashing
 into the coastline.

-
Not Synced We were in this tiny, remote fjord,
-
Not Synced just inside the Arctic Circle.
-
Not Synced It had a greater population
 of sheep than people,

-
Not Synced so help if we needed it
 was nowhere to be found.

-
Not Synced I was in the water
 taking pictures of surfers,

-
Not Synced and it started to snow.
-
Not Synced And then the temperature
-
Not Synced began to drop.
-
Not Synced And I told myself, there's not a chance
you're getting out of the water.

-
Not Synced You traveled all this way. This is
exactly what you've been waiting for:

-
Not Synced freezing cold conditions
 with perfect waves,

-
Not Synced and although I couldn't even feel
my finger to push the trigger,

-
Not Synced I knew I wasn't getting out.
-
Not Synced So I just did whatever I could.
 I shook it off, whatever.

-
Not Synced But that was the point that I felt
-
Not Synced this wind gush through
 the valley and hit me,

-
Not Synced and what started as this light snowfall
-
Not Synced quickly became a full on blizzard,
-
Not Synced and I started to lose perception
-
Not Synced of where I was.
-
Not Synced I didn't know if I was drifting out to sea
-
Not Synced or towards shore,
-
Not Synced and all I could really make out
was the faint sound of seagulls

-
Not Synced and crashing waves.
-
Not Synced Now, I knew this place had a reputation
-
Not Synced for sinking ships and ground planes,
-
Not Synced and while I was out there floating,
-
Not Synced I started to get a little bit nervous.
-
Not Synced Actually, I was totally freaking out
-
Not Synced -- (Laughter) -- and I was
 borderline hypothermic,

-
Not Synced and my friends eventually
had to help me out of the water.

-
Not Synced And I don't know if it was
 delirium setting in or what,

-
Not Synced but they told me later
-
Not Synced I had a smile on my face the entire time.
-
Not Synced Now, it was this trip
-
Not Synced and probably that exact experience
where I really began to feel

-
Not Synced like every photograph was precious,
-
Not Synced because all of a sudden in that moment,
it was something I was forced to earn.

-
Not Synced And I realized,
-
Not Synced all this shivering had actually
 taught me something:

-
Not Synced in life, there are no shortcuts to joy.
-
Not Synced Anything that is worth pursuing
is going to require us to suffer

-
Not Synced just a little bit,
-
Not Synced and that tiny bit of suffering
that I did for my photography,

-
Not Synced it added a value to my work
that was so much more meaningful to me

-
Not Synced than just trying to fill
 the pages of the magazines.

-
Not Synced See, I gave a piece of myself
-
Not Synced in these places,
-
Not Synced and what I walked away with
-
Not Synced was a sense of fulfillment
-
Not Synced I had always been searching for.
-
Not Synced So I look back at this photograph.
-
Not Synced It's easy to see frozen fingers
 and cold wetsuits

-
Not Synced and even the struggle
that it took just to get there,

-
Not Synced but most of all, what I see
-
Not Synced is just joy.
-
Not Synced Thank you so much.
-
Not Synced (Applause)
