(original) Man In Nursing Home Reacts To Hearing Music From His Era
-
0:01 - 0:03[piano plays]
-
0:07 - 0:09I have one resident
that barely opens her eyes. -
0:09 - 0:11She doesn't respond.
-
0:12 - 0:15As much as I've tried,
I've known her for two years. -
0:15 - 0:17No matter what I tried,
massage wouldn't work, -
0:17 - 0:19nothing worked.
-
0:19 - 0:21But when we got introduced
to the iPods -
0:21 - 0:25and the family told me
the things that she liked, -
0:25 - 0:28it was amazing
once we put the iPod on her. -
0:28 - 0:30She started shaking her feet.
-
0:30 - 0:32She stared moving her head.
-
0:32 - 0:34Her son was just amazed...
-
0:35 - 0:39Ok, can we stop,
'cause now I'm... -
0:39 - 0:41I'm seeing her all over again.
-
0:45 - 0:48[piano continues]
-
0:53 - 0:54Hi, Poppa.
-
0:55 - 0:56Hi, Poppa.
-
0:56 - 0:57-Huh?
-
0:57 - 0:58-How you doin'?
-
0:58 - 1:00I'm all right.
Fine. -
1:00 - 1:01Great.
-
1:01 - 1:02-Who am I?
-
1:02 - 1:03-I don't know.
-
1:03 - 1:06Wait a minute... I don't know.
-
1:06 - 1:07I don't know.
-
1:07 - 1:09-Ok, it's Sherry.
-
1:09 - 1:12How long has he been
in the nursing home? -
1:12 - 1:14Approximately ten years.
-
1:14 - 1:19He was having seizures and my mother
couldn't handle him at home. -
1:19 - 1:21Of course it affected him greatly
-
1:21 - 1:24because he was always, you know,
fun-loving, singing, -
1:24 - 1:28you know, every occasion
he would come out with a song. -
1:28 - 1:30No matter where he was.
-
1:30 - 1:32I remember as a child
he used to walk us down the street, -
1:32 - 1:36me and my brother,
and he would do singing in the rain -
1:36 - 1:39he would have us jumping
and swinging around poles. -
1:39 - 1:42He was, you know, he was good.
He was always into music. -
1:42 - 1:46You know, always loved singing..
dancing. -
1:46 - 1:47-His name is Henry Dryer.
-
1:47 - 1:49-Uh-huh.
-
1:49 - 1:54-And... looking more or less
for religious music for him. -
1:54 - 1:55-Ok.
-
1:55 - 1:59-Because he enjoys music
and he's always holding the Bible, -
1:59 - 2:01so I'd rather have that for him.
-
2:01 - 2:06-We first see Henry inert,
maybe depressed, unresponsive, -
2:06 - 2:09and almost unalive.
-
2:09 - 2:09-Henry?
-
2:09 - 2:10-Yeah?
-
2:10 - 2:11-Henry?
-
2:11 - 2:12-Yeah so?
-
2:12 - 2:17-I found your music.
You want your music now? -
2:17 - 2:19(mumbling)
-
2:19 - 2:21-Ok, let's try your music, ok?
-
2:21 - 2:22And then you tell me
if it's too loud or not. -
2:22 - 2:28-Then he is given an iPod
containing the...his favorite music. -
2:28 - 2:32[singing]
-
2:40 - 2:43And immediately he lights up.
-
2:43 - 2:46His face is assumes expression,
his eyes open wide -
2:46 - 2:51he starts to sing, to rock,
and to move his arms -
2:51 - 2:55and he is being animated
by the music. -
2:55 - 2:59-And he used to always sit
on the unit with his head like this. -
2:59 - 3:01He didn't really talk
to much people -
3:01 - 3:04and then when I introduced
the music to him, -
3:04 - 3:08this is his reaction ever since.
-
3:08 - 3:10[laughs]
-
3:10 - 3:14[singing continues]
-
3:14 - 3:17-The philosopher Kant
once called music the quickening art -
3:17 - 3:20and Henry is being quickened;
he is being brought to life. -
3:20 - 3:20-Yeah?
-
3:20 - 3:22-I'm going to take the music from you
for one second, ok? -
3:22 - 3:27Just to ask you a few questions... ok?
-
3:27 - 3:28I'm gonna give it back to you.
-
3:28 - 3:29-Uh-huh.
-
3:29 - 3:30-Ok.
-
3:30 - 3:35-The effect of this doesn't stop,
which when the headphones -
3:35 - 3:40are taken off, Henry,
normally mute and virtually unable -
3:40 - 3:43to answer the simplest
yes or no questions is quite volumable. -
3:43 - 3:44-Henry.
-
3:44 - 3:45-Yeah?
-
3:46 - 3:49-Do you like the iPod;
do you like the music you are hearing? -
3:49 - 3:50-Yes.
-
3:50 - 3:52-Tell me about your music.
-
3:52 - 3:56-Well, I don't (mumbling)
-
3:58 - 4:00-Do you like music?
-
4:00 - 4:01-Yeah, I'm crazy about music.
-
4:01 - 4:05You play beautiful music,
beautiful sound. -
4:05 - 4:08-Did you play music
when you were-- -
4:08 - 4:10Did you like music
when you were young? -
4:10 - 4:10-Yes.
-
4:10 - 4:14Yes, I went to big dances
and things. -
4:14 - 4:18-What was your favorite music
when you were young? -
4:18 - 4:24I guess, uh, Cab Calloway
was my number one band guy -
4:24 - 4:26I liked--
-
4:26 - 4:30(scatting/mumbling)
-
4:30 - 4:33-What's your favorite Cab Calloway song?
-
4:35 - 4:42(singing)
I'll be home for Christmas -
4:42 - 4:49You can count, plan on me
-
4:49 - 4:54With plenty of snow, mistletoe,
-
4:54 - 4:58presents wrapped around your tree.
Ow! -
4:58 - 5:02-So in some sense,
Henry is restored to himself. -
5:02 - 5:06He has remembered who he is
-
5:06 - 5:11and he has reacquired his identity
for a while -
5:11 - 5:13through the power of music.
-
5:13 - 5:17What does music do to you?
-
5:39 - 5:43(mumbling)
-
5:43 - 5:46(singing)
Rosalie won't you love me. -
5:46 - 5:49Rosalie won't you be sweet
and kind. -
5:49 - 5:51-With this beautiful,
new technology -
5:51 - 5:54you can have all the music
which is significant for you -
5:54 - 5:57in something as big
as a matchbox or whatever, -
5:57 - 6:02and I think this may be
very, very important -
6:02 - 6:09in helping to animate, organize,
and bring a sense of identity -
6:09 - 6:13back to people
who are out of it otherwise. -
6:13 - 6:16Music will bring them
back into it, -
6:16 - 6:19Into their own personhood,
their own memories, -
6:19 - 6:22their own autobiographies.
