The Pixar Theory

  • 0:03 - 0:04
    What if I told you
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    that all Pixar movies
    are connected?
  • 0:06 - 0:10
That all the characters in those movies
actually live in the same universe
  • 0:10 - 0:13
    only in different times.
    How is that possible?
  • 0:13 - 0:14
    Keep watching and find out.
  • 0:24 - 0:28
Our story starts with the movie Brave
back in the old days of Scotland.
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    In the movie, Merida discovers
    some kind of magic which
  • 0:31 - 0:35
    accidentally transforms her mother into
a bear. That mysterious magic power comes
  • 0:35 - 0:37
from the witch in the forest.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
This will be the first time we see
    animals act like humans
  • 0:42 - 0:44
But who is that witch in the forest?
  • 0:44 - 0:48
We see her disappearing trough doors and we
    know she has magical powers
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    but who is she really?
  • 0:50 - 0:53
Well, actually she played a big
role in one other film on our list
  • 0:53 - 0:54
but we'll get to that later.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    During the centuries that followed
    Brave,
  • 0:56 - 0:59
the animals and objects who were
    experimented on by the witch
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    have slowly evolved
  • 1:00 - 1:04
    creating a power struggle between
    humans, animals and machines.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    The conflict between humans
    and animals is depicted across:
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    Ratatouille, Finding Nemo and UP
  • 1:09 - 1:13
    In Ratatouille, the animals are
    starting to experiment with their
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    growing intelligence in small environments.
  • 1:15 - 1:19
In the movie, Remy tries to invade a
    human-only territory:
  • 1:19 - 1:20
    cooking.
  • 1:20 - 1:23
He then befriends a group of humans
    but makes one enemy:
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    Chef Skinner
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    What happened to Skinner after
    discovering the intelligent minds
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    that outperformed human beings?
  • 1:29 - 1:32
It's possible that the word of that
discovery has reached the years of
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    Charles Muntz,
    the villain in UP.
  • 1:35 - 1:38
Which then led him to develop
    technology that could harness
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    the thoughts of animals.
  • 1:39 - 1:43
After Muntz his demise, the dogs are
free but we don't really know
  • 1:43 - 1:44
    what happened to them.
  • 1:44 - 1:48
But one thing's for sure. Now that
people know the potential of animals.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
They start crossing the line and the
    hatred between the two grows
  • 1:51 - 1:55
    Thus begins the Industrial Revolution
    hinted at in UP.
  • 1:55 - 1:59
In the beginning of UP, Carl is forced
to sell his house to a corporation
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    in charge expanding the city.
  • 2:01 - 2:02
    Think about it.
  • 2:02 - 2:06
    What corporation is responsible
    for pollution and technology overreach?
  • 2:06 - 2:10
'Buy n Large' is the massive corporation that
runs pretty much everything in WALL-E.
  • 2:10 - 2:14
In 'The History of BNL', an ad in
the movie, we're told that being BNL
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    has even taken over
    world governments.
  • 2:16 - 2:21
AD: 'Over two million wholly-owned subsidiaries,
governmental bodies and health care centers.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
Buy n Large has become the world leader
    in every conceivable field
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    including world leadership!'
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    In Finding Nemo,
  • 2:28 - 2:31
we're told a story about saving a fish
    from the bad human beings.
  • 2:31 - 2:35
An entire population of sea creatures is
    harnessed for that cause.
  • 2:35 - 2:39
    Humans continue to antagonize the
    increasingly networked and intelligent
  • 2:39 - 2:43
animals. But this is as far as we
go with the animal kingdom for now.
  • 2:43 - 2:44
Let's back up for a bit.
  • 2:44 - 2:47
    We mentioned before that
    a struggle arises between
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    humans, animals and machines.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    So when did the
    machine's artificial intelligence start?
  • 2:51 - 2:52
    In the Incredibles,
  • 2:53 - 2:58
Syndrome tries to kill all the superheroes due
to a grudge between him and Mr. Incredible
  • 2:58 - 3:02
    'I am your biggest fan...'
    'But....'
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    But it's not actually him
    who was doing the killing.
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    Syndrome is using the Omnidroid,
  • 3:07 - 3:10
an AI killing machine that can
    learn and adapt during combat.
  • 3:10 - 3:15
Eventually the robot turns on its creator
and tries killing innocent people randomly.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
Why would an AI robot do that?
  • 3:17 - 3:20
    Do machines have an
    inherent hatred towards humans?
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    Why? We know that animals
    hate humans because
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    they're destroying the environment
    and experimenting on them.
  • 3:25 - 3:28
But what do machines have against them?
  • 3:29 - 3:33
In Toy Story, humans use and discard
    toys that clearly have feelings.
  • 3:33 - 3:35
At birth the toys are happy
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    but as things progress, they
    get fed up with people.
  • 3:37 - 3:40
    They rise up against
    Sid in the first one.
  • 3:40 - 3:43
    Jessie resents her owner for
abandoning her in the second one.
  • 3:43 - 3:47
And in the third one, Lotso ...
Well he just hates all people.
  • 3:49 - 3:52
'She replaced us! Come on ...'
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    Toys are not happy
    with the status quo.
  • 3:54 - 3:57
Giving a reason for why machines
and objects want to take over.
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    At this point in time,
  • 3:59 - 4:03
    the superheroes are almost extinct
    and mankind is vulnerable.
  • 4:03 - 4:04
    Despite that,
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    we don't see machines
    rise up against humans.
  • 4:06 - 4:08
Not in a straightforward way anyway.
  • 4:08 - 4:12
Their using BNL, a faceless corporation,
    to dominate the world starting
  • 4:12 - 4:16
    after the Omnidroid defeated most
    superheroes.
  • 4:16 - 4:20
It's made clear that these sentient
objects rely on humans for everything
  • 4:20 - 4:25
    fulfillment, energy,... they need them.
So machines decide to control humans
  • 4:25 - 4:27
    instead of taking over them.
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    That way they can use
    them for their needs.
  • 4:29 - 4:33
This leads to the Industrial Revolution
    which eventually leads to worldwide
  • 4:33 - 4:37
pollution. When the animals rise up
against humans to stop the pollution,
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    humans will get help
    from the machines
  • 4:39 - 4:42
    and we already know who's
going to win that war ...
  • 4:42 - 4:45
    At a certain point,
    planet earth becomes unsuitable
  • 4:45 - 4:47
    for living for both animals
    and humans
  • 4:47 - 4:51
which forces people to move to space as
a last attempt to save the human race.
  • 4:53 - 4:56
In space, the machines have made
humans dependent on them for everything
  • 4:56 - 5:00
    because that's how they were
treated as toys. That's all they know.
  • 5:00 - 5:04
Meanwhile on earth, machines are the
only beings left to populate the planet.
  • 5:04 - 5:07
    They follow human behavior and
    tradition as seen in Cars.
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    Because that's what they
    learned from humans.
  • 5:10 - 5:12
There are no people or animals
    left on the planet
  • 5:12 - 5:16
but they're influence is still prominent.
Which brings us back to WALL-E.
  • 5:16 - 5:19
Why is WALL-E the only machine left on
    earth?
  • 5:19 - 5:21
We know that the movie starts
  • 5:21 - 5:23
    hundreds of years after
    humans have left the planet.
  • 5:23 - 5:25
    It's WALL-E fascination
    with human culture
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    and a friendship
    with a living being,
  • 5:27 - 5:29
    the cockroach, that
    kept him going.
  • 5:29 - 5:33
That's what made him special and sent
him on a journey to liberate the humans.
  • 5:33 - 5:38
He remembers the time when humans
and machines lived side by side happily.
  • 5:38 - 5:40
When humans go back to earth,
    they bring with them
  • 5:40 - 5:42
    the single last plant
    that survived.
  • 5:42 - 5:46
At the credits of the film, we see
the plant and it grows to be a huge tree
  • 5:46 - 5:50
    that surprisingly resembles
the main tree in "A Bug's Life.
  • 5:50 - 5:52
    The reason we don't see
any humans in 'A Bug's Life'
  • 5:52 - 5:54
    is that there's not many
    of them left.
  • 5:54 - 5:58
We know that some insects survived after
    the humans left the planet.
  • 5:58 - 6:02
So it was easier for them to repopulate
    again once humans came back.
  • 6:02 - 6:03
    So what's next?
  • 6:03 - 6:07
    Humans, machines and animals start
    repopulating the planet in harmony
  • 6:07 - 6:10
to the point that a new species is born:
    monsters
  • 6:10 - 6:15
    The monster's universe is actually
earth in the very far future.
  • 6:15 - 6:17
    Where did the
    monsters come from?
  • 6:17 - 6:21
    Maybe mutations of animals after
hundreds years on a diseased planet.
  • 6:21 - 6:24
    They sure do look
    like mutated animals.
  • 6:24 - 6:27
    They're smart; they have
    cities and even universities.
  • 6:27 - 6:30
    The monsters however
    have an energy crisis
  • 6:30 - 6:33
    because, like the machines, they
    need humans for their energy.
  • 6:33 - 6:36
But they're living in the future world
    where humans are all gone.
  • 6:36 - 6:39
The doors they use to visit
    humans for their screams
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    are not doors to
    parallel dimensions.
  • 6:41 - 6:44
    They're going back in time.
    They're visiting the time
  • 6:44 - 6:47
    when humans were most prominent
    and harvesting them for energy.
  • 6:47 - 6:50
This would have been the end
    if it wasn't for Boo,
  • 6:50 - 6:52
the little girl in 'Monsters Inc.'.
  • 6:52 - 6:54
    Boo slipped into the
    futuristic world of the monsters
  • 6:54 - 6:55
    and found a friend there.
  • 6:55 - 6:57
After going back to her world,
  • 6:57 - 7:00
she kept trying to find a
    way to see Sulley again
  • 7:00 - 7:01
    and became a witch.
  • 7:01 - 7:02
    Yes,
  • 7:02 - 7:03
Boo is the witch from Brave.
  • 7:03 - 7:06
    She figured out
    how to travel through time
  • 7:06 - 7:08
and goes back to, what she thinks,
    is the source of it.
  • 7:08 - 7:13
The 'Will O' the Wisps', the magic that
    started this whole thing.
  • 7:13 - 7:17
She tries using that magic to create a
door that will bring her back to Sulley.
  • 7:17 - 7:20
That's why the doors in her hut
keep leaving to the different places.
  • 7:20 - 7:23
These are doors that she created
in the same way the monsters did.
  • 7:23 - 7:24
    They transport through time
  • 7:25 - 7:27
    and that is why Merida
couldn't find the witch later on
  • 7:27 - 7:30
    So boo keeps traveling through
    doors looking for Sulley.
  • 7:31 - 7:34
But does she ever find him?
We'd like to believe she does.
  • 7:34 - 7:38
And their love for each other is what
binds all the Pixar movies together.
  • 7:38 - 7:43
The love of different people from
different ages and even different species,
  • 7:43 - 7:46
finding ways to live together in peace...
  • 7:46 - 7:49
And that is 'The Pixar Theory'...
  • 7:53 - 7:55
