WHO: The Two Polio Vaccines
-
0:00 - 0:03Polio is a disease
that causes permanent paralysis. -
0:05 - 0:08We can't cure it,
but we can prevent it. -
0:09 - 0:11Two important tools help
to prevent polio. -
0:11 - 0:13Two safe, effective vaccines.
-
0:15 - 0:18One of these vaccines is given
with just two drops -
0:18 - 0:20into the mouth of a child,
-
0:20 - 0:22this is called the oral polio vaccine.
-
0:23 - 0:24The other is given with an injection,
-
0:24 - 0:28this is called the inactivated polio
virus vaccine. -
0:28 - 0:32They both teach children's bodies
how to fight off the polio virus. -
0:32 - 0:34But they do this in different ways.
-
0:35 - 0:39The oral polio vaccine builds protection
in the child's intestine. -
0:39 - 0:42This vaccine not only protects
the child who receives it, -
0:42 - 0:45but also protects all those around
the vaccinated child. -
0:46 - 0:50Several doses of the oral polio vaccine
should be given to every single child -
0:50 - 0:53in places where polio is a threat.
-
0:53 - 0:58The injectable vaccine builds protection
in the blood instead of the gut. -
0:58 - 1:02It helps to boost immunity and
keeps countries free from polio. -
1:02 - 1:05But it doesn't stop polio spreading
between children, -
1:05 - 1:09so it is not as useful in places
where the virus is still circulating. -
1:10 - 1:14We need the oral vaccine to stop the virus
wherever it is found. -
1:15 - 1:17Once polio has been stopped everywhere,
-
1:17 - 1:20the inactivated polio virus vaccine
will be used on its own -
1:20 - 1:23to keep populations protected.
-
1:24 - 1:27Both of these vaccines have been approved
as safe and effective -
1:27 - 1:29by the World Health Organization.
-
1:30 - 1:33To do their job properly,
they need to be given to all children -
1:33 - 1:35no matter where they live.
-
1:36 - 1:38Thanks to these vaccines
-
1:38 - 1:42cases of polio have fallen by over 99%
around the world. -
1:45 - 1:48Let's vaccinate every last child!
-
1:48 - 1:50Let's end polio forever!
