Day in the Life in a Japanese Manga Artist Shared House

  • 0:00 - 0:02
This is a day in the life of a Japanese
  • 0:02 - 0:04
manga artist living in a share house
  • 0:05 - 0:14
    [Music]
  • 0:25 - 0:29
    [Music]
  • 0:29 - 0:31
This is Nobi, 25 years old, living in the
  • 0:31 - 0:33
outskirts of Tokyo and he's just waking
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    up
  • 0:35 - 0:37
he's originally from Hiroshima but now
  • 0:37 - 0:39
living in this unique shared house
  • 0:39 - 0:41
reserved for only aspiring mangaka aka
  • 0:41 - 0:43
manga artist he lives with three other
  • 0:43 - 0:45
mangaka under the special program called
  • 0:45 - 0:47
tokiwaso project which provides a living
  • 0:47 - 0:49
space in addition to support to help
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    develop a manga artist's career
  • 0:52 - 0:55
wow he's mixing natto mozugu seaweed and
  • 0:55 - 0:58
egg kind of a unique japanese quick but
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    healthy meal
  • 1:00 - 1:01
    do you eat this often
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    you're so healthy
  • 1:13 - 1:16
    [Music]
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    Oh! You drink protein too?
  • 1:24 - 1:27
despite not really drawing as a kid he
  • 1:27 - 1:28
started creating manga a style of
  • 1:28 - 1:30
Japanese comic books six years ago under
  • 1:30 - 1:32
the name "Nobikitaro" he enrolled in
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    anabuki design college in Hiroshima
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    prefecture and studied manga and
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    illustration for two years eventually
  • 1:38 - 1:40
moving to Tokyo to pursue his career as
  • 1:40 - 1:42
a mangaka and recently received the
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    bi-annual award for upcoming mangaka
  • 1:44 - 1:46
from Chiba Tetsuya the creator of the
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    popular manga ashinojo
  • 1:48 - 1:50
good morning everyone I am back with
  • 1:50 - 1:52
another day in the life a lot of you
  • 1:52 - 1:54
asked me to do another manga artist so
  • 1:54 - 1:56
here we are but this time i'm going to
  • 1:56 - 1:59
be following an aspiring manga artist
  • 1:59 - 2:00
living in a shared house let's go see
  • 2:00 - 2:02
what Nobi is doing right now so I just
  • 2:02 - 2:04
made it into the share house and Nobi
  • 2:04 - 2:07
should be on the second floor
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    [Music]
  • 2:10 - 2:11
    Good morning!
  • 2:12 - 2:13
Did you sleep well last night?
  • 2:21 - 2:23
he has a deadline in one week for his
  • 2:23 - 2:26
first ever publisher paid yomikiri a
  • 2:26 - 2:28
complete manga story that ends in one
  • 2:28 - 2:29
episode and he's still working on the
  • 2:29 - 2:31
story so it makes sense why he's just a
  • 2:31 - 2:33
bit stressed how far are you from
  • 2:33 - 2:33
    finishing
  • 2:41 - 2:42
he says that one of the most challenging
  • 2:42 - 2:44
and time-consuming aspects for him is
  • 2:44 - 2:46
building the actual story for his manga
  • 2:46 - 2:48
it usually requires many redrafts and
  • 2:48 - 2:50
endless adjustments to get it flowing
  • 2:50 - 2:52
perfectly for example he said it took
  • 2:52 - 2:54
him two months to create his last manga
  • 2:54 - 2:55
    what are you doing now
  • 3:03 - 3:05
in the mornings he feels that his mind
  • 3:05 - 3:07
is most clear so he typically starts his
  • 3:07 - 3:09
day creating manga but to ensure he
  • 3:09 - 3:10
works on all aspects of his craft
  • 3:10 - 3:12
throughout the day he maintains a
  • 3:12 - 3:14
schedule to keep on track and motivated
  • 3:14 - 3:15
and this morning it seems like he's
  • 3:15 - 3:17
starting to work on his story plot for
  • 3:17 - 3:19
his Yomikiri so let me quickly explain
  • 3:19 - 3:20
what happens during the manga creation
  • 3:20 - 3:22
process after finishing the plot he'll
  • 3:22 - 3:24
work on the nemu a rough drawing layout
  • 3:24 - 3:26
plan for his yomikiri which he needs
  • 3:26 - 3:28
to produce for his editor it looks like
  • 3:28 - 3:29
a bigger version of these tiny tiles
  • 3:29 - 3:31
with a lot more detail after getting
  • 3:31 - 3:33
feedback Nobi has to repeat this
  • 3:33 - 3:35
process several times until the editor
  • 3:35 - 3:36
approves the content at which point
  • 3:36 - 3:38
he'll start working on his genko the
  • 3:38 - 3:40
final manuscript that gets submitted to
  • 3:40 - 3:43
    the editor before publishing
  • 3:43 - 3:45
he's typing random words what's that for
  • 3:56 - 3:58
How many manga have you fully comepleted?
  • 4:02 - 4:03
What's the name of the manga you last made?
  • 4:05 - 4:07
so it looks like Nobi gonna be doing
  • 4:07 - 4:08
this for a while so while he's doing
  • 4:08 - 4:10
that let's do what we do and explore
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    this place
  • 4:12 - 4:16
okay so let's see what's upstairs oh wow
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    look at this room
  • 4:19 - 4:21
so apparently this is a free room it has
  • 4:21 - 4:23
everything you need it has a bed it has
  • 4:23 - 4:25
a desk and a place to put your clothes
  • 4:25 - 4:27
okay so let's see if anyone is in this
  • 4:27 - 4:30
    room
  • 4:30 - 4:32
oh that's one of his housemates can I
  • 4:32 - 4:34
    bother you for a sec
  • 4:34 - 4:35
what are you doing right now
  • 4:44 - 4:45
How long have you been living here?
  • 4:46 - 4:47
Why did you decide to live here?
  • 4:56 - 4:57
Is it easy working on your manga here?
  • 5:05 - 5:06
    Can I see your work?
  • 5:09 - 5:10
    What's the title?
  • 5:14 - 5:14
    And what's your name?
  • 5:17 - 5:19
and cool these are their toilets with
  • 5:19 - 5:21
    that typical old-school Japanese home
  • 5:21 - 5:24
styling fairly clean for a shared house
  • 5:24 - 5:25
I guess Nobi is done working on his
  • 5:25 - 5:27
manga for now and it seems like he's
  • 5:27 - 5:28
    going outside
  • 5:34 - 5:36
    [Music]
  • 5:38 - 5:39
    Where are you heading to?
  • 5:45 - 5:47
    as a manga artist there's a constant
  • 5:47 - 5:49
level of creative output required so
  • 5:49 - 5:50
Nobi thinks it's important to get out
  • 5:50 - 5:52
once in a while to take inspiration from
  • 5:52 - 5:55
    new experiences
  • 5:56 - 5:58
oh he switches backpack to the front a
  • 5:58 - 5:59
typical show of courtesy in japan when
  • 6:00 - 6:01
riding trains or when in other crowded
  • 6:01 - 6:03
    areas
  • 6:03 - 6:05
nice he found a senpai aka mangaka
  • 6:05 - 6:07
friend who's more experienced today they
  • 6:07 - 6:09
decided to go to Akihabara because
  • 6:09 - 6:11
Nobi wanted to specifically take some
  • 6:11 - 6:13
photos here to use as background images
  • 6:13 - 6:15
for his manga apparently they don't
  • 6:15 - 6:16
necessarily need to draw all of their
  • 6:16 - 6:18
backgrounds but instead use photos and
  • 6:18 - 6:19
edit it in a manga production software
  • 6:19 - 6:22
like clip studio Nobi what do you look
  • 6:22 - 6:23
    for when taking photos
  • 6:37 - 6:39
What kind of photos are you taking?
  • 6:51 - 6:53
in the past manga was strictly drawn
  • 6:53 - 6:54
with paper and ink but in this new
  • 6:54 - 6:56
digital age electronic tablets and pcs
  • 6:56 - 6:58
are becoming more and more the standard
  • 6:58 - 6:59
which is helping artists today produce
  • 6:59 - 7:02
    content more quickly and efficiently
  • 7:06 - 7:08
it's lunchtime it seems that they've
  • 7:08 - 7:10
decided to pick up some wagyu burgers
  • 7:10 - 7:11
and find a place to eat outside so how
  • 7:11 - 7:12
    did you guys meet
  • 7:20 - 7:21
What kind of manga do you create?
  • 7:26 - 7:27
he says that a publisher was looking for
  • 7:27 - 7:29
an artist on their social media who
  • 7:29 - 7:31
could create a manga centered around
  • 7:31 - 7:33
fencing Nobi spotted it and told him about it
  • 7:36 - 7:38
when did you decide to become a mangaka
  • 8:00 - 8:01
one of the main reasons why Nobi asked
  • 8:01 - 8:03
to meet a senpai today is he wanted to
  • 8:03 - 8:05
get some advice about the plot direction
  • 8:05 - 8:06
for his manga so what do you think
  • 8:21 - 8:22
So what happens if your late for your deadline?
  • 8:34 - 8:35
yeah, it's understandable that he wants to
  • 8:35 - 8:37
start his career with credibility now
  • 8:37 - 8:39
equipped with the senpai sage advice
  • 8:39 - 8:43
Nobi has regained much of his focus
  • 8:43 - 8:44
what are you going to do now
  • 8:56 - 8:58
so Nobi found this job through his
  • 8:58 - 9:00
friend on social media and now he works
  • 9:00 - 9:01
for the company remotely and sometimes
  • 9:01 - 9:03
at their office he usually works about
  • 9:03 - 9:04
three to four hours when he works from
  • 9:04 - 9:06
home but since he needs to work on his
  • 9:06 - 9:07
name today he's only gonna work for
  • 9:07 - 9:09
about an hour the average starting manga
  • 9:09 - 9:10
artist's annual income in japan is
  • 9:10 - 9:12
around two to four million yen about 17
  • 9:12 - 9:15
to 35 000 us dollars so to supplement
  • 9:15 - 9:17
living costs that many take on part-time
  • 9:17 - 9:18
    or assistant jobs
  • 9:18 - 9:19
    are you done?
  • 9:21 - 9:24
    [Music]
  • 9:28 - 9:30
Do you always stand while you draw?
  • 9:36 - 9:38
he's using a Wacom screen tablet
  • 9:38 - 9:40
apparently Wacom is used by many manga
  • 9:40 - 9:42
artists in Japan and is one of the most
  • 9:42 - 9:43
popular brands for its ease of use and
  • 9:43 - 9:46
precise drawing tools oh and that's his
  • 9:46 - 9:48
    shortcut keyboard, cool!
  • 9:49 - 9:51
    Where are you going Nobi
  • 9:54 - 9:58
    [Music]
  • 9:59 - 10:00
now he has his teiki mendan a counseling
  • 10:01 - 10:02
meeting with an advisor from the
  • 10:02 - 10:04
    tokiwaso program scheduled regularly to
  • 10:04 - 10:06
discuss how his manga is developing in
  • 10:06 - 10:08
addition to how he's living in the
  • 10:08 - 10:10
shared house in fact there are many
  • 10:10 - 10:11
    young artists living in tokiwaso's
  • 10:11 - 10:13
shared houses throughout Tokyo and often
  • 10:13 - 10:15
mangaka starting a new career face many
  • 10:15 - 10:17
roadblocks so advisors visit to share
  • 10:17 - 10:18
and guide all of them in industry
  • 10:18 - 10:20
knowledge and know-how so that the
  • 10:20 - 10:21
artists have as many tools as possible
  • 10:21 - 10:23
to help continue them on their path and
  • 10:23 - 10:25
to increase their chances of success
  • 10:33 - 10:35
    [Music]
  • 10:35 - 10:36
when Nobi hits a creative wall with
  • 10:36 - 10:38
the stories or simply needs to get some
  • 10:38 - 10:39
fresh air he takes a walk along the
  • 10:39 - 10:41
river by his house Nobi so how's your
  • 10:41 - 10:42
    story coming along now
  • 10:51 - 10:53
by the way are there any new ways to
  • 10:53 - 10:54
earn income aside from going through
  • 10:54 - 10:55
    publishers
  • 11:00 - 11:02
he says there are so many types of
  • 11:02 - 11:03
digital manga and ebooks available these
  • 11:03 - 11:05
days it's giving way to ebook agents
  • 11:05 - 11:07
that will help release a mangaka's work
  • 11:07 - 11:09
to hundreds of platforms for a fee at
  • 11:09 - 11:10
the same time this new digital era has
  • 11:10 - 11:12
also given opportunity to mangaka in
  • 11:12 - 11:15
niche markets like dark manga that would
  • 11:15 - 11:16
have never been approved by established
  • 11:16 - 11:17
    publishers
  • 11:21 - 11:23
oh he's back on his tablet
  • 11:23 - 11:25
    what are you doing now?
  • 11:30 - 11:32
in the past to build any sort of career
  • 11:32 - 11:34
as a mangaka an artist's only option was
  • 11:34 - 11:36
to work with a publisher to earn a
  • 11:36 - 11:37
living which required them to do a
  • 11:37 - 11:39
walk-in interview or get recognized by
  • 11:39 - 11:41
winning an award but this practice has
  • 11:41 - 11:42
slightly changed in Japan as social
  • 11:42 - 11:44
    media has provided mangaka alternative
  • 11:44 - 11:46
ways to promote and earn a living with
  • 11:46 - 11:48
their manga aspiring mangaka can now be
  • 11:48 - 11:50
discovered online and some can even earn
  • 11:50 - 11:52
a living by publishing their manga on
  • 11:52 - 11:54
    various online platforms but working
  • 11:54 - 11:55
with a publisher even to this day
  • 11:55 - 11:59
remains a prudent path to a lucrative career. So what did you upload?
  • 12:05 - 12:06
so Nobi's been involved with an online
  • 12:06 - 12:08
group of manga artists for the last two
  • 12:08 - 12:10
years where every saturday a topic is
  • 12:10 - 12:12
announced and each member is required to
  • 12:12 - 12:13
create their own two page manga when
  • 12:13 - 12:15
he's done with it he posted on twitter
  • 12:15 - 12:17
and pixiv which is the largest social
  • 12:17 - 12:18
media platform for manga artists and
  • 12:18 - 12:21
illustrators in japan he makes a point
  • 12:21 - 12:22
to update his fanbox which is like a
  • 12:22 - 12:25
blog space every day by the way do you
  • 12:25 - 12:26
think going to school to learn about
  • 12:26 - 12:27
    manga gave you an advantage
  • 12:32 - 12:33
he says that the skills he learned at
  • 12:33 - 12:35
school in two years can probably be
  • 12:35 - 12:36
learned in half a year working as a
  • 12:36 - 12:38
    mangaka assistant but the largest
  • 12:38 - 12:40
advantage was the opportunity to meet
  • 12:40 - 12:42
other aspiring mangaka his road wasn't
  • 12:42 - 12:43
easy though as he realized that many of
  • 12:43 - 12:45
the other students were more talented
  • 12:45 - 12:47
than him so after graduating he
  • 12:47 - 12:48
realistically took a job working at an
  • 12:48 - 12:51
electronic store for three years but
  • 12:51 - 12:52
later seeing one of his younger
  • 12:52 - 12:54
    classmates get their manga published
  • 12:54 - 12:56
reignited his passion to re-pursue his
  • 12:56 - 12:57
    mangaka career
  • 12:57 - 13:01
    [Music]
  • 13:03 - 13:07
oh I guess he's cooking his own dinner now
  • 13:07 - 13:09
and there's his housemate I guess he goI
  • 13:09 - 13:13
some udon from matsuya smells so good
  • 13:13 - 13:14
Nobi's fairly close to his housemates
  • 13:14 - 13:16
so when there's a chance they eat
  • 13:16 - 13:18
    together and naturally they often
  • 13:18 - 13:21
    discuss manga
  • 13:21 - 13:22
right now Nobi's showing him one of
  • 13:22 - 13:24
his latest manga to get his feedback
  • 13:24 - 13:26
it's one of the benefits of living with
  • 13:26 - 13:27
other manga artists nobi says that he
  • 13:27 - 13:29
    appreciates living in an environment
  • 13:29 - 13:30
where others share a common love for
  • 13:30 - 13:32
manga while also having a different
  • 13:32 - 13:36
perspective in life. So what do you think about Nobi's manga?
  • 13:49 - 13:50
now that he's bathed it's time to
  • 13:50 - 13:52
refocus on the plot he's been struggling
  • 13:52 - 13:54
    with all day
  • 13:54 - 13:55
be honest do you think he can finish the
  • 13:55 - 13:56
    storyline
  • 14:01 - 14:03
What about the Nemu? Are you gonna be okay?
  • 14:10 - 14:11
so it looks like Nobi will be doing
  • 14:11 - 14:13
this the rest of the night as he has to
  • 14:13 - 14:15
finish this nemu by the end of the week
  • 14:15 - 14:17
