October 17 - A House for the Blind Man

  • 0:15 - 0:19
I'm Leigh Rice, leader of discipleship
    ministries for the South Pacific.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    I'm in Port Moresby today
and excited to be with Pastor Kove Tau,
  • 0:22 - 0:25
leader of the church in this city
    of 800 thousand people.
  • 0:28 - 0:32
Discovery Bible reading is at the heart
    of our disciple-making process.
  • 0:33 - 0:37
    Members invite family, friends,
    work colleagues, fellow students
  • 0:37 - 0:39
to come together to read the Bible.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
We asked Brother Peter to come
and do some training for us.
  • 0:47 - 0:52
    Peter has taught us
the method of Jesus, which is simple,
  • 0:52 - 0:56
anybody can do it, it's reproducible,
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    at no cost.
  • 1:00 - 1:04
We decided to restructure the way
we do the ministry of our churches.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
We follow the model in the Book of Acts,
  • 1:07 - 1:09
how the new testament church grew.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
We turned our Sabbath school classes
  • 1:12 - 1:15
    into discovery Bible reading groups.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    We've restructured
    our church Sabbath school classes
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    according to the place
    where the members are living.
  • 1:24 - 1:28
We bring the church to their houses
    and their houses become churches.
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    My name is Nathan.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
I got excited seeing the method
  • 1:37 - 1:41
in which we can share God's word.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
I heard of that idea and decided
  • 1:45 - 1:48
that I had to bring that idea to my home.
  • 1:49 - 1:52
Now, this is where we meet every Sabbath.
  • 1:56 - 2:02
When we started this discovery Bible,
reading with my family and neighbors,
  • 2:02 - 2:07
it really had a big impact
    on our spiritual life.
  • 2:08 - 2:13
    My family and my kids,
    all three teenagers,
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    were able to discuss
    the Bible for themselves
  • 2:16 - 2:18
and we were having fun with it.
  • 2:23 - 2:28
    Starting with the gospel
of Mark, read one story at a time,
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    commencing with a prayer obviously.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    A second person reads it
  • 2:32 - 2:35
and then one person in the group
retells the story in their own words.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    The process is built
    around five simple questions.
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    What is new?
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    What surprises you?
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    What don't you understand?
  • 2:45 - 2:48
What will you obey or apply to your life?
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    And what will you share
    with someone else this week?
  • 2:51 - 2:52
    After discussion, we pray,
  • 2:52 - 2:54
"Father thank you for being with us.
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    Please help us
as we follow Jesus this week."
  • 2:58 - 3:01
I work for [ALAS] construction company
  • 3:01 - 3:04
    as a building supervisor.
  • 3:04 - 3:07
After running that group in my home,
  • 3:07 - 3:11
I decided to bring that idea
    to my workplace.
  • 3:12 - 3:16
It had a very big impact on my boys.
  • 3:21 - 3:25
I know an old blind man.
    I call him "Vinegar,"
  • 3:25 - 3:30
    I found out he lived
in a makeshift sort of house.
  • 3:30 - 3:33
I had this idea of building a house.
  • 3:34 - 3:37
I wanted to discuss that with my boys.
  • 3:37 - 3:42
They got excited, and they voluntarily
put their hand up to help me.
  • 3:43 - 3:46
I believe Jesus is my savior.
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    I trust in Him.
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    One day He will return,
and I will go with him.
  • 3:52 - 3:55
    Every Sabbath, there are
    two to three baptisms
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    in each church.
  • 3:57 - 3:59
By way of record, this quarter,
  • 3:59 - 4:02
this has been the biggest baptism
  • 4:02 - 4:05
    ever taken place
    in the Central Papua Conference.
  • 4:05 - 4:09
I am seeing a paradigm shift
in the way we do church.
  • 4:09 - 4:10
Because the churches now are seeing
  • 4:10 - 4:14
that we have to bring the church
    to where the community is.
  • 4:26 - 4:28
    God uses ordinary people
  • 4:28 - 4:31
to carry out His extraordinary plans.
