Sitting Mindfully | Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh | #mindfulness

  • 0:06 - 0:09
What is the use of sitting,
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    hours and hours ?
  • 0:17 - 0:21
    The best answer is :
    because I like sitting.
  • 0:22 - 0:25
Because sitting can bring peace and joy.
  • 0:26 - 0:30
And if you cannot produce joy and peace
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    in sitting meditation,
  • 0:34 - 0:38
sitting meditation is of no use.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    It doesn't help you.
  • 0:43 - 0:46
Even if you sit ten hours a day.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
We have to learn how to sit.
  • 0:51 - 0:54
So we can produce peace and joy.
  • 0:55 - 0:59
We can get in touch with
    the wonders of life.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    Within and around us.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    For our nourishment and healing.
  • 1:06 - 1:09
We just sit there and enjoy.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
And many things are enjoyable, like our
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    in-breath and out-breath.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
    You breathe in, and
    you enjoy your in-breath.
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    You breathe out, and
    you enjoy your out-breath.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    Mindfullness of breathing.
  • 1:33 - 1:35
Everyone of us can do it.
  • 1:36 - 1:40
You breath in, and you are aware
    that you are breathing in.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    It's not difficult.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    It can be very pleasant.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
When you breath in with mindfullness,
  • 1:55 - 1:57
you are aware that you have a body.
  • 1:57 - 2:03
    And you are breathing in,
    and nourishing your body.
  • 2:04 - 2:07
And you are also aware that
    you are alive.
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    Sitting meditation can be wonderful.
  • 2:16 - 2:21
You can get in touch with the wonderful
    aspects of life.
  • 2:25 - 2:27
You focus your attention on your eyes,
  • 2:28 - 2:32
and you find out are still in
    excellent condition.
  • 2:34 - 2:37
Breathing in, I am aware of my eyes,
  • 2:39 - 2:42
Breathing out, I smile to my eyes.
  • 2:43 - 2:46
My eyes are still in good condition.
  • 2:46 - 2:50
I only need to open them,
in order to get in touch with the paradise
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    of forms and colors.
  • 2:56 - 2:58
So my eyes are a wonder of life.
  • 2:59 - 3:04
And if I continue, I will touch
    many wonders of life,
  • 3:05 - 3:08
in my body and in my consciousness.
  • 3:10 - 3:14
    So mindfullness is enlightenment itself.
  • 3:15 - 3:16
In buddhism, we speak of enlightenment,
  • 3:17 - 3:20
but you don't need ten years
    in order to get enlightened.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    You need a few seconds.
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    To get enlightenment.
  • 3:27 - 3:31
    Enlightenment is always
    enlightenment on what.
  • 3:34 - 3:38
If you are aware that you are alive,
  • 3:38 - 3:41
    that is already enlightenment.
  • 3:42 - 3:44
If you are aware that you have a body,
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    that is already enlightenment.
  • 3:53 - 3:56
And enlightenment can make you free.
  • 3:56 - 3:58
It can help you to produce
  • 3:59 - 4:03
    the energy of joy,
    of happiness, and peace.
