A day in the life of a Roman soldier - Robert Garland
-
0:06 - 0:12The year is 15 CE
and the Roman Empire is prospering. -
0:12 - 0:14Most of the credit will go to the emperor,
-
0:14 - 0:17but this success wouldn’t
have been possible -
0:17 - 0:21without loyal soldiers like Servius Felix.
-
0:21 - 0:25Servius enlisted as a legionary
eight years ago at age 18, -
0:25 - 0:29the son of a poor farmer
with few prospects. -
0:29 - 0:32Unlike the majority of legionaries,
he doesn’t gamble, -
0:32 - 0:35so he’s been able to save
most of his wages. -
0:35 - 0:37He’s even kept his viaticum,
-
0:37 - 0:41the three gold coins he received
when he enlisted. -
0:41 - 0:45If he survives until retirement,
he’ll receive several acres of land. -
0:45 - 0:48And he’s grown rather fond
of a girl back home -
0:48 - 0:50whom he intends to marry.
-
0:50 - 0:54But he’ll have to wait until he completes
his 25 years of service -
0:54 - 0:55before that can happen.
-
0:55 - 0:59And the life of a legionary
is dangerous and grueling. -
0:59 - 1:03Today, Servius’s legion,
along with three others, -
1:03 - 1:08has undertaken a “great march”
of 30,000 Roman paces, -
1:08 - 1:11the equivalent of nearly 36 kilometers.
-
1:11 - 1:13Servius’s armor and weapons,
-
1:13 - 1:14including his gladius,
-
1:14 - 1:15scutum,
-
1:15 - 1:17and two pila,
-
1:17 - 1:19weigh over 20 kilograms.
-
1:19 - 1:22And that’s not counting his backpack,
or sarcina, -
1:22 - 1:27which contains food and all the tools
he needs to help build the camp – -
1:27 - 1:28spade,
-
1:28 - 1:29saw,
-
1:29 - 1:30pickaxe,
-
1:30 - 1:31and basket.
-
1:31 - 1:35Although Servius is exhausted,
he won’t sleep much tonight. -
1:35 - 1:37He’s been assigned the first watch,
-
1:37 - 1:39which means looking after
the baggage animals -
1:39 - 1:43and keeping alert
against a possible ambush. -
1:43 - 1:46After he’s done, he lies awake,
dreading the day ahead, -
1:46 - 1:50which will force him
to recall his worst nightmare. -
1:50 - 1:54At dawn, Servius eats breakfast
with his seven tent companions. -
1:54 - 1:59They’re like a family, all bearing scars
from the battles they’ve fought together. -
1:59 - 2:00Servius is from Italia,
-
2:00 - 2:04but his fellow soldiers hail
from all over the empire, -
2:04 - 2:07which stretches from Syria to Spain.
-
2:07 - 2:11So they’re all far from home
in the northern land of Germania. -
2:11 - 2:14Servius’s legion
and three others with him today -
2:14 - 2:18are under the command of
Emperor Tiberius’s nephew Germanicus, -
2:18 - 2:23named for his father’s military successes
against the Germanic tribes. -
2:23 - 2:26Each legion has close to 5,000 men,
-
2:26 - 2:29divided into cohorts of about 500,
-
2:29 - 2:34further subdivided into centuries
of around 80-100 men. -
2:34 - 2:37Each century is commanded by a centurion.
-
2:37 - 2:41An aquilifer, or eagle-bearer, marches at
the head of each legion -
2:41 - 2:44carrying its eagle standard.
-
2:44 - 2:47The centurions march beside
the legionaries belting out orders, -
2:47 - 2:50“Dex, sin, dex, sin,"
-
2:50 - 2:53“Right, left, right, left,"
-
2:53 - 2:57starting with the right foot as the left
is considered unlucky or sinister. -
2:57 - 3:00Despite the strict discipline,
there’s tension in the air. -
3:00 - 3:03Last year, some legions
in the area revolted, -
3:03 - 3:07demanding better pay
and a cut in the length of service. -
3:07 - 3:10Only their general’s charisma
and negotiating skills -
3:10 - 3:13prevented wholesale mutiny.
-
3:13 - 3:16Today is a “just march,”
only 30 kilometers. -
3:16 - 3:21As the marshes and forests of Germania
lie beyond the empire’s road system -
3:21 - 3:25the men must build causeways
and bridges to make headway— -
3:25 - 3:29something they’ve recently spent
more time doing than fighting. -
3:29 - 3:34Finally, they arrive at their destination,
a place Servius knows too well. -
3:34 - 3:37It’s a clearing on the outskirts
of the Teutoburg Forest, -
3:37 - 3:41where six years ago, during the
reign of the Emperor Augustus, -
3:41 - 3:44Germanic tribes under
their chieftain Arminius -
3:44 - 3:48ambushed and destroyed three legions.
-
3:48 - 3:50Proceeding along a narrow path,
-
3:50 - 3:54the legions were attacked from
forest cover under torrential rain -
3:54 - 3:56with their escape blocked.
-
3:56 - 3:59It was one of the worst defeats
the Romans ever suffered -
3:59 - 4:03and Augustus never lived it down.
-
4:03 - 4:06Servius was one of the few survivors.
-
4:06 - 4:11Servius still has nightmares of
his comrades lying where they fell. -
4:11 - 4:16But now the army is back to bury
the dead with full military honors. -
4:16 - 4:18As he helps in the task,
-
4:18 - 4:24he can’t help wondering whether the bones
he handles belonged to someone he knew. -
4:24 - 4:29Several times he wants to weep aloud,
but he pushes on with the task. -
4:29 - 4:31The glory of the Empire
can go to the crows. -
4:31 - 4:36All he craves is to retire
on a small farm with his wife-to-be, -
4:36 - 4:39if the gods should spare his life
for 17 more years.
