-
0:20 - 0:25>>ROBERT LEHRMAN: Barack Obama in 2004 was totally unknown.
-
0:25 - 0:27People were saying, "Huh, I don't know who this guy is.
-
0:27 - 0:29Wonder why they picked him."
-
0:29 - 0:31>>MICHAEL COHEN: He had this reputation as a bit of an upstart.
-
0:31 - 0:34As sort of a young, rising figure in the party.
-
0:34 - 0:35But no one knew who this guy was.
-
0:35 - 0:38This was his chance to introduce himself to people.
-
0:38 - 0:45>>BARACK OBAMA: Tonight is a particular honor for me because, let's face it, my presence on this stage is pretty unlikely.
-
0:47 - 0:52My father was a foreign student, born and raised in a small village in Kenya.
-
0:53 - 0:58>>COHEN: What makes a great political feat is if you can somehow fold your story into this larger American story.
-
0:58 - 1:01>>LEHRMAN: The next thing he says is about his mother's family.
-
1:01 - 1:06His grandfather fought in World War II, he used the GI Bill, they settled in Kansas.
-
1:06 - 1:09So white people could say, "Huh, oh.
-
1:09 - 1:11He's just like us."
-
1:11 - 1:14>>OBAMA: My parents shared not only an improbable love;
-
1:14 - 1:18they shared an abiding faith in the possibilities of this nation.
-
1:19 - 1:24I stand here knowing that my story is part of the larger American story.
-
1:24 - 1:27That I owe a debt to all of those who came before me,
-
1:27 - 1:31and that in no other country on earth is my story even possible.
-
1:31 - 1:36[New Age transition music plays]
-
1:36 - 1:40>>CHARLTON MCILWAIN: Going into this speech, we've had four years of George Bush,
-
1:40 - 1:44and we felt, as a country, like we've grown further apart.
-
1:44 - 1:47>>COHEN: '04 was very much a divisive partisan race.
-
1:47 - 1:49Obama's speech was in some ways an antidote to that.
-
1:49 - 1:52>>OBAMA: Alongside our famous individualism,
-
1:52 - 1:59there's another ingredient in the American saga, a belief that we are all connected as one people.
-
1:59 - 2:03If there's a child on the south side of Chicago who can't read,
-
2:03 - 2:05that matters to me, even if it's not my child.
-
2:05 - 2:06[Audience applauds]
-
2:06 - 2:10If there's a senior citizen somewhere who
can't pay for their prescription, -
2:10 - 2:12and having to choose between medicine and the rent,
-
2:12 - 2:15that makes my life poorer, even if it's not my grandparent.
-
2:15 - 2:17[Audience applauds]
-
2:17 - 2:21It is that fundamental belief, I am my brother's keeper,
-
2:21 - 2:24I am my sister's keeper, that makes this country work.
-
2:24 - 2:25[Audience applauds]
-
2:25 - 2:29"E pluribus unum," out of many, one.
-
2:30 - 2:35>>COHEN: He gives a speech that presages his entire political message of 2008
-
2:35 - 2:37which is this sort of post-partisan argument.
-
2:37 - 2:41>>OBAMA: Now even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us,
-
2:41 - 2:47the spin masters, the negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of anything goes.
-
2:48 - 2:55Well, I say to them tonight, there is not a liberal America and a conservative America;
-
2:55 - 2:58there is the United States of America.
-
2:58 - 2:59[Audience applauds]
-
2:59 - 3:01[Jazzy transition music plays]
-
3:01 - 3:04>>MARIO CUOMO: Obama was born with two great gifts.
-
3:04 - 3:11One is his mind, and the other is his ability to speak to large groups of people.
-
3:11 - 3:16>>LEHRMAN: There are three things that Obama does that really makes that speech effective.
-
3:16 - 3:21He wants concrete detail, he likes story, and he loves antithesis,
-
3:21 - 3:25the use of repetition and structure to show contrast.
-
3:25 - 3:28"There is not a liberal America, or a conservative America."
-
3:28 - 3:30There is one America.
-
3:30 - 3:33>>OBAMA: There's not a black America and white America
-
3:33 - 3:39and Latino America and Asian America; there's the United States of America.
-
3:39 - 3:40[Audience applauds]
-
3:40 - 3:45The pundits like to slice and dice our country into red states and blue states,
-
3:45 - 3:46but I've got news for them too.
-
3:46 - 3:49We worship an awesome God in the blue states,
-
3:49 - 3:53and we don't like federal agents poking around our libraries in the red states.
-
3:53 - 3:55[Audience cheers]
-
3:55 - 4:01We coach little league in the blue states and, yes, we've got some gay friends in the red states.
-
4:01 - 4:01[Audience applauds]
-
4:01 - 4:05We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes,
-
4:05 - 4:10all of us defending the United States of America.
-
4:10 - 4:11[Audience cheers]
-
4:11 - 4:14>>COHEN: The way he uses his hands, he actually points a lot
-
4:14 - 4:16and does a lot of "this", and a lot of "this", and a lot of "that".
-
4:16 - 4:18>>MCILWAIN: In doing so, he gives off this sense of energy.
-
4:18 - 4:22"I am new, I am someone who is dynamic."
-
4:22 - 4:23>>COHEN: And he doesn't do that so much anymore.
-
4:23 - 4:27He's a little more solemn, and reserved when he gives speeches today.
-
4:27 - 4:29And I think it's more reflective of his office.
-
4:29 - 4:31[Guitar-based transition music plays]
-
4:31 - 4:33[Audience applauds]
-
4:33 - 4:37>>OBAMA: In the end, in the end, that's what this election is about.
-
4:37 - 4:39[Audience chanting "Obama"]
-
4:39 - 4:45Do we participate in a politics of cynicism, or do we participate in a politics of hope?
-
4:46 - 4:49It's the hope of slaves sitting around a fire singing freedom songs;
-
4:50 - 4:54the hope of immigrants setting out for distant shores;
-
4:54 - 5:00the hope of a young naval lieutenant bravely patrolling the Mekong Delta;
-
5:00 - 5:03the hope of a millworker's son who dares to defy the odds;
-
5:03 - 5:09the hope of a skinny kid with a funny name who believes that America has a place for him, too.
-
5:09 - 5:11[Audience applauds]
-
5:11 - 5:15>>OBAMA: Hope. Hope in the face of difficulty.
-
5:15 - 5:20Hope in the face of uncertainty, the audacity of hope.
-
5:20 - 5:22[Audience cheering]
-
5:22 - 5:26>>LEHRMAN: His appearance at that convention, which was the best speech of the convention,
-
5:26 - 5:29better than John Kerry's, was electrifying.
-
5:29 - 5:32And without it, he wouldn't be president.
-
5:32 - 5:34>>CUOMO: I think sincerity means a lot.
-
5:34 - 5:38There are people who, when they speak, they speak the truth as they see it.
-
5:38 - 5:40And they're- they're very effective doing that.
-
5:40 - 5:44>>OBAMA: I believe this country will reclaim it's promise,
-
5:44 - 5:47and out of this long political darkness, a brighter day will come.
-
5:47 - 5:48Thank you very much, everybody.
-
5:48 - 5:49God bless you.
-
5:49 - 6:03[Audience cheers]
-
6:03 - 6:13[Drum-based outro music plays]
