When to take a stand — and when to let it go

  • Not Synced
    So this summer,
  • Not Synced
I was back in Ohio for a family wedding.
  • Not Synced
    And when I was there,
  • Not Synced
there was a meet and greet
  • Not Synced
with Anna and Elsa from Frozen.
  • Not Synced
Not the Anna and Elsa from Frozen,
  • Not Synced
as this was not a Disney-sanctioned event.
  • Not Synced
These two entrepreneurs had a business
    of running princess parties.
  • Not Synced
    If a kid's turning five,
  • Not Synced
    they'll come sing some songs,
  • Not Synced
    sprinkle some fairy dust.
  • Not Synced
    It's great.
  • Not Synced
And they were not about to miss out
    on the opportunity
  • Not Synced
on the phenomenon that was Frozen.
  • Not Synced
So they get hired by the local toy store,
  • Not Synced
kids come in on a Saturday morning,
  • Not Synced
    buy some Disney swag,
  • Not Synced
get their picture taken with the princesses,
  • Not Synced
    call it a day.
  • Not Synced
    It's like Santa Claus without
    the seasonal restrictions.
  • Not Synced
And my three and a half old niece, Samantha,
  • Not Synced
was in the thick of it.
  • Not Synced
She could care less that these two women
  • Not Synced
were signing posters and coloring books
  • Not Synced
as "Snow Queen" and "Princess Ana"
    with one N
  • Not Synced
    to avoid copyright lawsuits.
  • Not Synced
According to my niece and the 200 plus
kids in the parking lot that day,
  • Not Synced
this was the Anna and Elsa from Frozen.
  • Not Synced
It is a a blazing hot Saturday morning
    in August in Ohio.
  • Not Synced
We get there at 10 o'clock,
  • Not Synced
    the scheduled start time,
  • Not Synced
and we are handed number 59.
  • Not Synced
By 11 o'clock, they had called
    numbers 21 through 25.
  • Not Synced
This was going to be a while.
  • Not Synced
    And there is no amount
    of free face painting
  • Not Synced
or temporary tattoos that could prevent
    the meltdowns
  • Not Synced
that were occurring outside of this store.
  • Not Synced
So, by 12:30, we get called,
  • Not Synced
    "56 to 63, please."
  • Not Synced
    And as we walk in,
  • Not Synced
it is a scene I can only describe to you
  • Not Synced
as saying it looked like Norway threw up.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    There were cardboard cut-out snowflakes
    covering the floor,
  • Not Synced
    glitter on every flat surface
  • Not Synced
and icicles all over the walls.
  • Not Synced
And as we stood in line in an attempt
  • Not Synced
to give my niece a better vantage point
  • Not Synced
than the backside of the mother
    of number 58,
  • Not Synced
I put her up on my shoulders
  • Not Synced
    and she was instantly riveted
by the sight of the princesses.
  • Not Synced
    And as we moved forward,
  • Not Synced
    her excitement only grew.
  • Not Synced
And as we finally got to the front of the line
  • Not Synced
and number 58 unfurled her poster
to be signed by the princesses,
  • Not Synced
I could literally feel the excitement
    running through her body.
  • Not Synced
    Let's be honest,
  • Not Synced
at that point, I was pretty excited too.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    I mean, the Scandinavian decadence
    was mesmerizing.
  • Not Synced
So we get to the front of the line,
  • Not Synced
and the haggard clerk turns to my niece
    and says,
  • Not Synced
    "Hi, Honey. You're next.
    Wanna get down
  • Not Synced
or do you want to stay
    on your dad's shoulders
  • Not Synced
    for the picture?"
  • Not Synced
And I was, for lack of a better word,
  • Not Synced
    frozen.
  • Not Synced
It's amazing that in an unexpected instant
  • Not Synced
    we're faced with the question,
  • Not Synced
    Who am I?
  • Not Synced
Am I an aunt or am I an advocate?
  • Not Synced
Millions of people have seen my
    video about
  • Not Synced
how to have a hard conversation
  • Not Synced
and there one was, right in front of me.
  • Not Synced
At the same time, there's nothing
    more important to me
  • Not Synced
than the kids in my life.
  • Not Synced
So I found myself in a situation
  • Not Synced
that we so often find ourselves in.
  • Not Synced
We are torn between two things,
  • Not Synced
    two impossible choices.
  • Not Synced
    Would I be an advocate?
  • Not Synced
Would I take my niece off my shoulders
  • Not Synced
and turn to the clerk and explain to her
  • Not Synced
that I was in fact her aunt,
    not her father,
  • Not Synced
and that she should be more careful
  • Not Synced
and not jump to gender conclusions
  • Not Synced
    based on haircuts and shoulder-rides.
  • Not Synced
    And while doing that,
  • Not Synced
miss out on what was, to this point,
  • Not Synced
the greatest moment of my niece's life.
  • Not Synced
Or would I be an aunt?
  • Not Synced
Would I brush off that comment,
  • Not Synced
take a million pictures and not
    be distracted for an instant
  • Not Synced
from the pure joy of that moment,
  • Not Synced
and by doing that, walk out with the shame
  • Not Synced
that comes from not standing up for myself,
  • Not Synced
especially in front of my niece.
  • Not Synced
    Who was I?
  • Not Synced
    Which one was more important?
  • Not Synced
Which role was more worth it?
  • Not Synced
Was I an aunt, or was I an advocate?
  • Not Synced
And I had a split second to decide.
  • Not Synced
    We are taught right now
  • Not Synced
that we are living in a world
  • Not Synced
    of constant and increasing polarity.
  • Not Synced
    It's so black and white,
  • Not Synced
    so us and them,
  • Not Synced
    so right and wrong.
  • Not Synced
There is no middle, there is no grey.
  • Not Synced
    Just polarity.
  • Not Synced
Polarity is a state in which two ideas
    or opinions
  • Not Synced
are completely opposite from each other.
  • Not Synced
    Diametrial opposition.
  • Not Synced
    Which side are you on?
  • Not Synced
Are you unequivoably and without question
  • Not Synced
anti-war, pro choice, anti death penalty
    pro gun regulation,
  • Not Synced
    proponent of open borders
    and pro union.
  • Not Synced
    Or are you absolutely
    and uncompromisingly
  • Not Synced
pro wat, pro life, pro death penalty
  • Not Synced
believe the 2nd amendment is absolute,
  • Not Synced
    anti immigrant and pro business.
  • Not Synced
    It's all or none,
  • Not Synced
you're with us or against us.
  • Not Synced
    That is polarity.
  • Not Synced
    Now the problem with polarity
    and aboslutes
  • Not Synced
is that it eliminates the individuality
  • Not Synced
    of our human experience
  • Not Synced
    and that makes it contradictory
    to our human nature.
  • Not Synced
But if we're pulled in these two directions
  • Not Synced
but it's not really where we exist,
  • Not Synced
polarity is not really our actually reality,
  • Not Synced
where do we go from there,
  • Not Synced
what's at the other end of that spectrum?
  • Not Synced
    And I don't think that it's unattainable,
    harmonious utopia,
  • Not Synced
I think the opposite of polarity is duality.
  • Not Synced
Now duality is the state of having two parts
  • Not Synced
    but not in diametrical opposition,
  • Not Synced
    in simultaneous existence.
  • Not Synced
    Don't think it's possible?
  • Not Synced
Here are the people I know.
  • Not Synced
I knew catholics who were pro choice
