Fact or opinion

  • Not Synced
Is it a fact, or is it an opinion?
  • Not Synced
    Does it matter?
  • Not Synced
    Yes.
  • Not Synced
    Both are important.
  • Not Synced
    But knowing how to distinguish
    between fact and opinion
  • Not Synced
can help us to better understand
  • Not Synced
    what we read and hear,
  • Not Synced
and how we form our opinions.
  • Not Synced
    Let's take a look.
  • Not Synced
    A fact is a statement
that can be proven to be true.
  • Not Synced
    Facts are objetive,
  • Not Synced
which means they are not influenced
  • Not Synced
by what someone thinks or believes.
  • Not Synced
    A fact is indisputable
  • Not Synced
    and cannot be changed.
  • Not Synced
    There are some key questions
    to identify facts.
  • Not Synced
    1) Can it be measured or confirmed
    with calculations or data?
  • Not Synced
    For example,
  • Not Synced
    two plus two equals four.
  • Not Synced
We can add the numbers and demostrate
  • Not Synced
    that this stament is true.
  • Not Synced
    2) Can it be observed?
    Can we see it happen?
  • Not Synced
    For, instance,
  • Not Synced
99% of people cannot lick ther elbow.
  • Not Synced
    This is true.
  • Not Synced
This is a fact that can be observed.
  • Not Synced
    Research has determined
that one over a hundred people
  • Not Synced
    can successfully complete this task.
  • Not Synced
    3) Can it be verified by primary sources,
  • Not Synced
    such as research, photographs, newspapers,
  • Not Synced
    and other facts?
  • Not Synced
    Here is an example,
  • Not Synced
    Nintendo was started in 1889.
  • Not Synced
This is a fact because it can be verifed
  • Not Synced
    by many sources.
  • Not Synced
A man named Fusajiro Yamauchi, from Japan
  • Not Synced
    founded Nintendo
as a playing card company in 1889,
  • Not Synced
and now is one of the largest
    gaming companies in the world.
  • Not Synced
Now, let's move on to opinion,
  • Not Synced
which sometimes can be a little trickier.
  • Not Synced
    An opinion is a statement
  • Not Synced
    of believe or judgement.
  • Not Synced
    Opinions express
    which someone thinks or feels.
  • Not Synced
    An opinion can change.
  • Not Synced
    Let's look some examples.
  • Not Synced
    Ice cream is delicious.
  • Not Synced
    Many people believe this
    but some people don't.
  • Not Synced
    It is a judgement,
    and therefore an opinion.
  • Not Synced
When we evaluate something or somebody
  • Not Synced
    we often use adjectives
    such as important, beautiful
  • Not Synced
    fun or difficult.
  • Not Synced
An adjective that allows to judge something
  • Not Synced
is a clue that a statement is an opinion.
  • Not Synced
    Another signal word for opinions
    is the word should.
  • Not Synced
    Here is an example.
  • Not Synced
    Everyone should learn
    more than one language.
  • Not Synced
Whether may be very good reasons
  • Not Synced
to learnn more tnan one language,
  • Not Synced
    not everyone would agree,
  • Not Synced
    personal value do itself.
  • Not Synced
    Political views are opinions.
  • Not Synced
    Different people hold different ideas
  • Not Synced
    about what societies are,
  • Not Synced
and how is the best to address them.
  • Not Synced
Since opinion can´t be proven or disproven,
  • Not Synced
there is no right or wrong answer,
  • Not Synced
    just different view points.
  • Not Synced
    While opinions may be supported
    by facts and evidence,
  • Not Synced
    the issue we care about
    will still be
  • Not Synced
For example, I can say that
  • Not Synced
    going to school year-round
    is better for students.
  • Not Synced
There are supporters of this viewpoint.
  • Not Synced
    Someone argues
    that a shorter vacation period
  • Not Synced
    would prevent students
    from forgetting what they learnt,
  • Not Synced
or say that students often get bored
    over the summer.
  • Not Synced
Or that other countries around the world
    use a year-round system.
  • Not Synced
    However, we cannot prove
    that the stament is true.
  • Not Synced
There are many reasons to think
that a tenth- month calendar is better.
  • Not Synced
You can argue that a student needs
    an extended break,
  • Not Synced
and that they should be allowed
to participate in other summer activities.
  • Not Synced
Or that a lack of air conditioning means
  • Not Synced
they shouldn't be inside school buildings
    in the summer.
  • Not Synced
If we look back at the statement,
  • Not Synced
    we can also identify
    another signal word for opinion.
  • Not Synced
    The word better.
  • Not Synced
When we are comparing different things,
  • Not Synced
    or we see words
    like 'greatest','best' or 'better',
  • Not Synced
it can suggest we are looking
    at an opinion statement.
  • Not Synced
Another type of opinion is a prediction.
  • Not Synced
Often predictions are made on experience.
  • Not Synced
    knowledge or research.
  • Not Synced
But because they are based on the future,
  • Not Synced
we can't actually verify them today.
  • Not Synced
    Let's look an example.
  • Not Synced
    Driveless cars will represent
10% of all cars in 2026.
  • Not Synced
That sounds both amazing and scary.
  • Not Synced
Although there are so many factors
    about car technology
  • Not Synced
we have no way of verifying
    the statement today.
  • Not Synced
    So, it is an opinion.
  • Not Synced
    One thing to remember
    is that just because
  • Not Synced
we believe something to be true,
  • Not Synced
that does not make it a fact.
  • Not Synced
    Let's recap what we learnt.
  • Not Synced
    A fact is a statement
that can be proven to be true,
  • Not Synced
    Can it be measured
    or confirmed by data?
  • Not Synced
    Can it be observed?
  • Not Synced
    Can we verify its truth
    with other sources?
  • Not Synced
    Does it say the same?
  • Not Synced
If we answer yes to one of these questions
  • Not Synced
that means it is a fact.
  • Not Synced
    An opinion is a statement
    of believe and judgement
  • Not Synced
that cannot be proven to be true.
  • Not Synced
Does it evalute someone or something?
  • Not Synced
    Can we debate it?
  • Not Synced
    Does it make a prediction?
  • Not Synced
    Can it change?
  • Not Synced
    If you may answer 'Yes'
to these questions, is an opinion.
  • Not Synced
    Knowing how to separate
    between fact and opinion,
  • Not Synced
    help us to understand information
  • Not Synced
and shape our own beliefs about the world.
  • Not Synced
    Try it and see
if you can use these questions
  • Not Synced
and tell the difference in your own light.
