Clownfish at home in a red anemone

  • 0:00 - 0:06
[Sounds of waves lapping the seashore]
  • 0:06 - 0:08
For the first time here in Ponta Malongane,
  • 0:08 - 0:13
we eventually get to see a really pretty sunrise
  • 0:13 - 0:17
    over the actual bay.
  • 0:17 - 0:18
What we decided to do today was head up to
  • 0:18 - 0:22
one of Ponta Malongane's deeper reefs,
  • 0:22 - 0:26
a reef called Three Sisters, which is about 2 kilometres
  • 0:26 - 0:31
from the actual launchsite here at Ponta Malongane.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
And it's one of those reefs that's, again,
  • 0:34 - 0:40
not very big, but really just absolutely teeming with fish.
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    Big shoals of lieutenant sturgeons
  • 0:42 - 0:48
just gathering amongst a cleaning station.
  • 0:53 - 0:57
Then on the top of the reef, there is a small cave
  • 0:57 - 0:58
which obviously when there is quite a big swell
  • 0:58 - 1:02
as you can see, there is quite a surge that rushes though here
  • 1:02 - 1:05
and this just seems to be the perfect sanctuary for
  • 1:05 - 1:11
    literally thousands of little juveniles.
  • 1:11 - 1:12
And then just looking down this reef
  • 1:12 - 1:14
you can see the true potential,
  • 1:14 - 1:17
There's just every single fish in the book here:
  • 1:17 - 1:20
there's goat fish, there's lemon fish, there's rock hard, there's king fish.
  • 1:20 - 1:25
And I guess the highlights of this particular spot
  • 1:25 - 1:30
is this very strange red anemone.
  • 1:32 - 1:36
Why it's this red colour no-one really knows.
  • 1:36 - 1:40
There's little pigments in the makeup of it
  • 1:41 - 1:42
that gives it almost a glow.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
But it's quite a rare find
  • 1:44 - 1:53
and very impressive when you do come across them.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    The devil fire fish.
  • 1:56 - 2:01
    This guy's just absolutely motionless.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
A very aggressive fish, and they'll
  • 2:03 - 2:10
definitely pick off any small unsuspecting fish that swims close by
  • 2:16 - 2:19
One of the rock hards, this is the honeycomb rock hard
  • 2:19 - 2:23
just laying up on one of the shelves.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
And then another pair of clown fish,
  • 2:32 - 2:36
fighting off some damsels, the little domino fish
  • 2:36 - 2:39
trying to keep control over the anenome.
  • 2:48 - 2:52
And then I found this massive, big Puffer fish,
  • 2:52 - 2:56
possibly one of the biggest ones I've ever seen.
  • 3:06 - 3:13
A fish that eats most of its meals on the kelp and the rocks
  • 3:16 - 3:19
Two very well developed teeth that he has in his mouth
  • 3:19 - 3:24
which he uses to pick off little morsels off the reef.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
And here, just as we started our ascent,
  • 3:34 - 3:37
just another quick glimpse of the
  • 3:37 - 3:41
unbelievable volumes of fish that you find here
