Clownfish at home in a red anemone
-
0:00 - 0:06[Sounds of waves lapping the seashore]
-
0:06 - 0:08For the first time here in Ponta Malongane,
-
0:08 - 0:13we eventually get to see a really pretty sunrise
-
0:13 - 0:17over the actual bay.
-
0:17 - 0:18What we decided to do today was head up to
-
0:18 - 0:22one of Ponta Malongane's deeper reefs,
-
0:22 - 0:26a reef called Three Sisters, which is about 2 kilometres
-
0:26 - 0:31from the actual launchsite here at Ponta Malongane.
-
0:31 - 0:34And it's one of those reefs that's, again,
-
0:34 - 0:40not very big, but really just absolutely teeming with fish.
-
0:40 - 0:42Big shoals of lieutenant sturgeons
-
0:42 - 0:48just gathering amongst a cleaning station.
-
0:53 - 0:57Then on the top of the reef, there is a small cave
-
0:57 - 0:58which obviously when there is quite a big swell
-
0:58 - 1:02as you can see, there is quite a surge that rushes though here
-
1:02 - 1:05and this just seems to be the perfect sanctuary for
-
1:05 - 1:11literally thousands of little juveniles.
-
1:11 - 1:12And then just looking down this reef
-
1:12 - 1:14you can see the true potential,
-
1:14 - 1:17There's just every single fish in the book here:
-
1:17 - 1:20there's goat fish, there's lemon fish, there's rock hard, there's king fish.
-
1:20 - 1:25And I guess the highlights of this particular spot
-
1:25 - 1:30is this very strange red anemone.
-
1:32 - 1:36Why it's this red colour no-one really knows.
-
1:36 - 1:40There's little pigments in the makeup of it
-
1:41 - 1:42that gives it almost a glow.
-
1:42 - 1:44But it's quite a rare find
-
1:44 - 1:53and very impressive when you do come across them.
-
1:53 - 1:56The devil fire fish.
-
1:56 - 2:01This guy's just absolutely motionless.
-
2:01 - 2:03A very aggressive fish, and they'll
-
2:03 - 2:10definitely pick off any small unsuspecting fish that swims close by
-
2:16 - 2:19One of the rock hards, this is the honeycomb rock hard
-
2:19 - 2:23just laying up on one of the shelves.
-
2:29 - 2:32And then another pair of clown fish,
-
2:32 - 2:36fighting off some damsels, the little domino fish
-
2:36 - 2:39trying to keep control over the anenome.
-
2:48 - 2:52And then I found this massive, big Puffer fish,
-
2:52 - 2:56possibly one of the biggest ones I've ever seen.
-
3:06 - 3:13A fish that eats most of its meals on the kelp and the rocks
-
3:16 - 3:19Two very well developed teeth that he has in his mouth
-
3:19 - 3:24which he uses to pick off little morsels off the reef.
-
3:31 - 3:34And here, just as we started our ascent,
-
3:34 - 3:37just another quick glimpse of the
-
3:37 - 3:41unbelievable volumes of fish that you find here
