Engraving Improvements in MuseScore 4: How They Affect Your Older Scores

  • 0:03 - 0:08
One of the biggest improvements we've made
in MuseScore 4 has to do with the engraving –
  • 0:08 - 0:11
    – the way the scores themselves look.
  • 0:11 - 0:16
Actually it's not one big improvement, but
rather hundreds of tiny little improvements
  • 0:16 - 0:20
that will make your scores appear
    more polished and professional.
  • 0:20 - 0:24
If you're opening a score from an older version
of MuseScore, you may notice some differences.
  • 0:24 - 0:28
This video briefly shows you how
    your scores might be affected.
  • 0:28 - 0:32
    We've made some significant
changes to beams, slurs and ties,
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    horizontal spacing, and page layout.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    These changes have meant re-writing
    some of our engraving algorithms
  • 0:37 - 0:42
and setting new default positions for
    various kinds of notated elements.
  • 0:42 - 0:46
So if in an earlier version of MuseScore
    you found yourself manually adjusting
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    something like this beam because
you didn't like its default position,
  • 0:49 - 0:53
    then those manual adjustments may
    appear differently in MuseScore 4
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    because the default positions
    for beams have now changed.
  • 0:56 - 1:00
Or here, for example, where the spacing
between these notes is pretty inconsistent.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    You might have previously tried
    to adjust the layout stretch
  • 1:03 - 1:05
or the leading space to fix this.
  • 1:05 - 1:09
In MuseScore 4, we've had to reset the
layout stretch so our new horizontal
  • 1:09 - 1:14
spacing system can work its magic. Now these
notes look consistently spaced, by default.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
    You might have also moved
    slurs like these, for example,
  • 1:17 - 1:21
so that they're closer to their
    associated note stems or beams.
  • 1:21 - 1:25
Slurs in MuseScore 4 will now
    adopt these positions automatically.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
The good news is that our new
    default positions across the board
  • 1:28 - 1:30
are much better than they were before,
  • 1:30 - 1:34
meaning you'll need to make far fewer
manual adjustments in your new scores.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
And while we do try to preserve
as much of the manual customisation
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    you might have previously made,
we'd like to encourage you now to
  • 1:40 - 1:44
manually reset these styles when you
open your older scores in MuseScore 4.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
Resetting your styles is really easy:
  • 1:47 - 1:52
First, go to Format > Style and then
click "Reset all styles to default".
  • 1:52 - 1:58
And as an additional step, select everything
by using Control A (or Command A on a Mac),
  • 1:58 - 2:01
    and then go to
Format > Reset shapes and positions.
  • 2:01 - 2:05
Now your score will use our new default
    positions and improved algorithms.
  • 2:05 - 2:08

    engraving improvements,

and how they might affect your older scores,
