TEDxRainier - Patti Dobrowolski - Draw Your Future
-
0:13 - 0:15Maya Angelou once said,
-
0:15 - 0:19"A solitary fantasy can transform a million realities."
-
0:21 - 0:26What dream or vision do you want to turn into reality?
-
0:27 - 0:29I always wanted to go into business for myself.
-
0:29 - 0:31I could be a consultant.
-
0:31 - 0:36I'm going to go gluten free, right after I eat that last piece of chocolate cake.
-
0:36 - 0:38(Laughter)
-
0:38 - 0:43You know, one day I'm going to stand up to that crabby boss.
-
0:43 - 0:46I look good on paper, I should feel great.
-
0:46 - 0:49I just know there's more.
-
0:49 - 0:52You know it because you feel it.
-
0:53 - 0:57You lie awake at night. You talk about your dreams with your partner
-
0:57 - 0:59and your friends, but more often than not,
-
0:59 - 1:05you continue to do those same behaviors that keep you from making the change.
-
1:05 - 1:09You ask yourself, "How can I make it happen?"
-
1:10 - 1:15Research shows, the odds against you making a change in your life --
-
1:15 - 1:17-- 9 to 1.
-
1:17 - 1:229 to 1, even if you're facing a life-threatening illness.
-
1:23 - 1:26But let me show you how to beat those odds.
-
1:27 - 1:31You can live the life you desire. It's right there in front of you.
-
1:31 - 1:36But in order to achieve it, you must first see it, then believe it,
-
1:36 - 1:43and then you must graciously ask and train your brain to help you
-
1:43 - 1:45execute your vision.
-
1:46 - 1:48So how do we see our vision?
-
1:48 - 1:50Through a picture.
-
1:50 - 1:53A picture can create movement.
-
1:53 - 1:55A picture...
-
1:56 - 1:58can unite nations,
-
1:58 - 2:01a picture can pull at your heart
-
2:01 - 2:05and fill you with a deep desire to do something.
-
2:05 - 2:09At Roche Pharmaceutical, the president asked us to create a picture
-
2:09 - 2:10of his vision.
-
2:10 - 2:16Prior to having one, less than 40 percent of the employees understood
-
2:16 - 2:17the company's vision and strategy.
-
2:17 - 2:25After seeing this picture, 96 percent understood it, and 84 percent
-
2:25 - 2:30understood how what they did everyday align to that picture.
-
2:31 - 2:35So how can you use a picture to get what you want?
-
2:36 - 2:38By simply drawing one.
-
2:38 - 2:41You don't have to be an artist or know how to draw.
-
2:41 - 2:48As naive as your drawings might be, when you draw where you are,
-
2:49 - 2:53your current state, and where you want to be,
-
2:53 - 2:57your desired new reality.
-
3:01 - 3:05Suddenly, you have a road map for change.
-
3:05 - 3:07So what is your current state?
-
3:07 - 3:10Well, let's say you're Joe.
-
3:10 - 3:13Joe has a good job.
-
3:14 - 3:18Joe has a lovely wife, Amy.
-
3:20 - 3:23Joe makes good money,
-
3:25 - 3:28but like many of us, Joe wants more from life.
-
3:28 - 3:31And he'd like to get rid of a couple of things.
-
3:32 - 3:37Maybe that intense workload, maybe that negative boss.
-
3:39 - 3:44Maybe Joe has a higher purpose; he's just not sure how to get there.
-
3:45 - 3:48So, now, Joe's current state is visual.
-
3:49 - 3:52We remember things better when they're attached to a picture.
-
3:52 - 3:5565 percent better to be exact.
-
3:56 - 4:01So now let's imagine that Joe wants to change something in his current state.
-
4:01 - 4:06He wants to build that desired new reality that he dreams about.
-
4:07 - 4:09In order for Joe to freely dream,
-
4:09 - 4:11he must first...
-
4:14 - 4:16...trick his brain.
-
4:16 - 4:19Because the left side of your brain, as you know, houses the critic,
-
4:19 - 4:22who is forever trying to keep you safe from harm, make sure you
-
4:22 - 4:25don't do anything dangerous or stupid.
-
4:25 - 4:30So let's have Joe tell the critic that he's just going to use his imagination.
-
4:31 - 4:34Using your imagination activates the right side of your brain,
-
4:34 - 4:38which makes you creative and filled with possibility.
-
4:39 - 4:42So now, let's dream Joe's new life.
-
4:43 - 4:44In the best case scenario,
-
4:44 - 4:48one year from today, what is Joe's life like?
-
4:49 - 4:52Hey, Joe has a new job. Great.
-
4:53 - 4:58Joe has a new boss, himself.
-
4:59 - 5:02Joe has a couple of great collaborators,
-
5:02 - 5:07and Joe is just bursting with creativity and ideas,
-
5:07 - 5:10and all of those things we dream about.
-
5:10 - 5:12Connection,
-
5:13 - 5:15and purpose,
-
5:17 - 5:19and freedom,
-
5:22 - 5:23and love.
-
5:27 - 5:30Now I'm drawing this picture as the favor to Joe today.
-
5:30 - 5:33But in real life, he'd have to draw his own picture.
-
5:35 - 5:37Because he can't afford me.
-
5:37 - 5:39(Laughter)
-
5:39 - 5:44Actually, because you get the most power when you paint your own picture.
-
5:44 - 5:46So now, Joe has his drawing,
-
5:46 - 5:49so now he's got to soak it in.
-
5:49 - 5:51He has to fill it with color.
-
5:53 - 5:55He has to fill it with emotion.
-
5:58 - 6:04He has to get inside of it, as if he's on the inside, looking out.
-
6:06 - 6:13Your brain actually emits serotonin and Oxytocin when you draw and dream.
-
6:14 - 6:16So you feel happy.
-
6:18 - 6:20Capable, creative.
-
6:21 - 6:22You feel cool.
-
6:23 - 6:27So now, we have Joe's current state and Joe's desired new reality.
-
6:27 - 6:31So how can Joe get from here to there
-
6:33 - 6:35in just three bold steps?
-
6:36 - 6:37Three bold steps?
-
6:37 - 6:39If I knew how to get from here to there in three bold steps,
-
6:39 - 6:41I would have done it 25 years ago
-
6:41 - 6:43when I had a mullet.
-
6:43 - 6:46(Laughter)
-
6:46 - 6:50Here is where the magic begins. Your brain knows you.
-
6:50 - 6:54It's cataloged everything you've ever seen, heard, experienced,
-
6:54 - 6:56real, or imagined.
-
6:56 - 6:59You just have to ask it to put the pieces together for you.
-
6:59 - 7:01It as simple as that.
-
7:02 - 7:05We live in a three-dimensional world,
-
7:05 - 7:07but the light falls on the retina in
-
7:07 - 7:11a two-dimensional fashion, and the brain, it has to cope with it.
-
7:12 - 7:15So how does it deal with this extra dimension?
-
7:18 - 7:20It guesses.
-
7:20 - 7:21It guesses!
-
7:21 - 7:24And just as it can guess where your cup of coffee is when
-
7:24 - 7:27it goes to pick it up, it can correctly guess
-
7:27 - 7:30what the three bold steps are that you should take.
-
7:30 - 7:35All you have to do is look at your picture and then close your eyes.
-
7:36 - 7:42This allows the brain to recycle what it sees and reconstruct it,
-
7:42 - 7:45add to it everything you've ever seen, heard, experienced,
-
7:45 - 7:50or fantasized about, and then it will serve you up
-
7:50 - 7:52with the best possible solution.
-
7:52 - 7:55If you just relax and you ask it,
-
7:55 - 8:01now what's the boldest thing I could do to get from here to there?
-
8:01 - 8:04Boom, immediately it will tell you.
-
8:04 - 8:05See it,
-
8:07 - 8:09believe it,
-
8:11 - 8:13act on it.
-
8:14 - 8:17Now, the danger is, if any of those three bold steps are too scary,
-
8:17 - 8:20this instinctual rational side of your brain
-
8:20 - 8:22is going to try to talk you out of this.
-
8:22 - 8:24Oh, no, no, no, I don't want to do that...
-
8:24 - 8:28Oh, that desk it's not too small, my legs aren't cramped under there.
-
8:29 - 8:34Oh, 20,000 a year, oh, that's a decent salary.
-
8:35 - 8:38Oh, that boss, he's not that mean to me.
-
8:38 - 8:40You know what, I'm just going to stay right here.
-
8:40 - 8:42I feel really comfortable here.
-
8:46 - 8:50So how can you get yourself to do the boldest thing?
-
8:50 - 8:53By drawing the most compelling picture, so when you look here,
-
8:53 - 8:55you're in pain, it hurts.
-
8:55 - 8:58When you're here, you're ecstatic,
-
8:58 - 9:02it's fantastic, you're already living inside that
-
9:02 - 9:04connected and free life you drew.
-
9:04 - 9:11So, everyday, you get up, you soak in your picture, you step into the possibility,
-
9:11 - 9:15and this is the most important part, you act on it.
-
9:15 - 9:17You do one small thing.
-
9:18 - 9:20You call up that friend you know who started her own business,
-
9:20 - 9:22you ask her "How did you do it?"
-
9:22 - 9:25You ask Amy, "Will you support me in my vision?"
-
9:25 - 9:28You go to your boss and you ask him for a raise.
-
9:29 - 9:35And you become that one person out of ten to make change happen.
-
9:36 - 9:39Now, I put this template on your chairs,
-
9:39 - 9:42so that you can do for yourself what I just did for Joe.
-
9:43 - 9:46You've seen some fantastic ideas today that
-
9:46 - 9:48have inspired your dream.
-
9:49 - 9:53I dare you to draw that dream into that template.
-
9:54 - 9:59I double dare you to choose a symbol in your drawing
-
9:59 - 10:02that represents that desired new reality, take a picture
-
10:02 - 10:05of it with your phone and send it to us at TEDxRainier.
-
10:07 - 10:13Maya Angelou said, "A solitary fantasy can transform a million realities."
-
10:13 - 10:19Just three bold steps can transform one reality, yours.
-
10:19 - 10:21Thank you.
-
10:21 - 10:24(Applause)
