CIVIX Explains: Algorithms

• 0:15 - 0:20
Before the rise of the internet everyone saw
more or less the same news. It came from TV,
• 0:20 - 0:25
radio, and newspapers. The gatekeepers
of information were people,
• 0:25 - 0:29
with editors reviewing all the possible news
and deciding what the public should see.
• 0:30 - 0:33
Today. traditional news organizations are
joined by countless other sources online
• 0:35 - 0:39
and on the internet it is often computer
programs that decide what people should see.
• 0:40 - 0:45
When you search the web or visit a social media
site, there's so much content available that
• 0:45 - 0:50
a system is needed to filter the results
to predict what a user will want to see.
• 0:50 - 0:57
Online platforms use algorithms. An
algorithm is a set of instructions
• 0:57 - 1:01
that tells a computer how to perform certain
tasks such as how to sort information.
• 1:02 - 1:06
Algorithms determine what content to show
you based on a combination of what is popular
• 1:06 - 1:12
and what they know about
your attitudes and interests.
• 1:13 - 1:18
When you create a social media account you likely
provide some basic information such as your name,
• 1:18 - 1:26
gender, and age. You might share other information
without even realizing it. Each time you like,
• 1:26 - 1:31
share, or comment on a post that information is
stored and used to build a profile of you. On
• 1:31 - 1:36
the broader web, most of the actions you take are
tracked and accessible by social media algorithms.
• 1:36 - 1:41
It may come as a surprise how much an algorithm
can learn about you through your actions. This
• 1:41 - 1:46
data you leave behind is valuable because online
platforms make money by selling advertising.
• 1:47 - 1:51
Advertisers will pay to reach the people most
likely to be interested in their message.
• 1:52 - 1:56
The more a platform knows about you, the more
effectively it can target you with personalized
• 1:56 - 2:02
content and ads. Algorithms may encourage you to
keep clicking scrolling or watching by displaying
• 2:02 - 2:08
content that is popular interesting or new
because the goal is to hold your attention.
• 2:08 - 2:12
Algorithms can favor content that is
sensational, false, or misleading.
• 2:14 - 2:17
There are times when algorithms can
be helpful, for example, when a music
• 2:17 - 2:23
streaming service suggests a new song based
on what you've listened to before. But when
• 2:23 - 2:27
algorithms determine the news or information we
see the consequences may be more significant.
• 2:28 - 2:34
When information is personalized just for us we
can end up in filter bubbles. Filter bubbles form
• 2:34 - 2:39
when we are shown only information we are likely
to agree with. Being in a filter bubble can cause
• 2:39 - 2:43
us to become less accepting of views that are
different from our own. This can have a negative
• 2:43 - 2:50
effect on democracy which requires citizens to
listen to one another and find common ground.
• 2:50 - 2:53
Understanding why we see what we see
online can help us to be more critical
• 2:53 - 2:58
consumers of information. Our feeds never
give us the whole picture so we need to
• 2:58 - 3:04
build the habit of seeking out news and
information from a variety of sources.
