Ten Meters of Thinking: The ABC of Communication – Paul Hughes at TEDxInnsbruck
-
0:09 - 0:12Success
-
0:14 - 0:17is not a point.
-
0:18 - 0:20Success
-
0:21 - 0:23is a path.
-
0:24 - 0:27I'm Irish,
-
0:27 - 0:30and in the Celtic symbolism
-
0:30 - 0:35there are many symbols
that refer to a journey and a path. -
0:35 - 0:41One of them looks like this.
-
0:43 - 0:45It says unity.
-
0:45 - 0:48Everything is connected.
-
0:48 - 0:51And it says eternity.
-
0:51 - 0:56That no matter where you begin
you'll always comeback to the same place. -
0:57 - 0:59Today I'd like to talk to you
about a path, -
0:59 - 1:02and some of the qualities along that path.
-
1:03 - 1:07And I'm going to do this
across ten meters of paper, -
1:07 - 1:09which I call ten meters of thinking.
-
1:09 - 1:14Now, before you go
into a deeper state of learning, -
1:14 - 1:17I'd like to tell you little bit
about Irish logic. -
1:18 - 1:20Irish logic:
-
1:21 - 1:25This here as you can clearly see
is Patrick Murphy. -
1:25 - 1:29Patrick Murphy on Monday night,
-
1:29 - 1:33went out and had ten whiskeys and a cola.
-
1:34 - 1:38Now on Tuesday morning,
he woke up with a terrible hangover. -
1:38 - 1:42So, on Tuesday night
he had ten whiskeys and a Cola. -
1:42 - 1:45Wednesday morning,
he wakes up with a terrible hangover. -
1:45 - 1:50So when Wednesday night he goes out
and has ten Bacardies and a Cola. -
1:50 - 1:52Thursday morning waking up
with a terrible hangover, -
1:52 - 1:55he says, "That's it. No more Cola for me."
-
1:55 - 1:59(Laughter)
-
1:59 - 2:03Absolutely correct.
-
2:04 - 2:09Clearly, it's Cola that is the problem.
-
2:09 - 2:12It's completely logical.
-
2:12 - 2:17In fact you would have to say
you need to be illogical to be Irish. -
2:17 - 2:20(Laughter)
-
2:20 - 2:25Now, this of course is where
-
2:25 - 2:28unfortunately many businesses are today.
-
2:29 - 2:34We have to look beyond the obvious
to find the root cause. -
2:34 - 2:38And what I'm interested in
is how science and other disciplines -
2:38 - 2:40has done so.
-
2:40 - 2:41For example,
-
2:41 - 2:46this here as you can clearly see
is a butterfly. -
2:47 - 2:50And what science traditionally has done,
-
2:50 - 2:55is that it has captured the butterfly,
killed it, lots of blood, -
2:55 - 2:57(Laughter)
-
2:57 - 3:03and has put the analysis
in a static state. -
3:04 - 3:07Instead what science now is doing,
-
3:07 - 3:12is it's looking at the butterfly,
as you can clearly see that's a butterfly. -
3:12 - 3:14It's now looking at the butterfly
-
3:14 - 3:19in its environment within the context.
-
3:19 - 3:23This is now called dynamic knowledge.
-
3:23 - 3:26Dynamic knowledge,
because science now realizes -
3:26 - 3:29that when we have Carbon,
-
3:29 - 3:30when we have Hydrogen,
-
3:30 - 3:33and when we have Oxygen
-
3:33 - 3:36and we add these together,
-
3:36 - 3:40something unique is created.
-
3:40 - 3:42What is created here
-
3:42 - 3:47is something that is not in Carbon,
Hydrogen or Oxygen. -
3:47 - 3:51It only is created
with the synergy of these. -
3:51 - 3:56And this is sugar.
-
3:56 - 3:59Yet there's no sugar in Carbon,
Hydrogen or Oxygen. -
3:59 - 4:05A sweet spot is created
through the synergies. -
4:07 - 4:11This as we all know means
-
4:11 - 4:16that 1+1=?
-
4:20 - 4:22Scientists in the room?
-
4:22 - 4:251+1=...
-
4:25 - 4:2711.
-
4:29 - 4:31Obviously.
-
4:31 - 4:38The individuals working in unity,
unity in diversity, -
4:38 - 4:41we're still individuals keeping diversity,
-
4:41 - 4:45creating expediential value.
-
4:45 - 4:501+1 no longer
is synergistically meaning 2, -
4:50 - 4:541+1 now, in today's world, means 11.
-
4:57 - 5:03What this means is
that when we have communities, -
5:03 - 5:08communities that are connected
and operating together in synergy, -
5:08 - 5:13something new is going on,
there's a new meaning. -
5:14 - 5:18This community comes
from the Maori culture in New Zealand. -
5:18 - 5:20The Maori culture in New Zealand,
-
5:20 - 5:25every period of time marks that period
with the building of the boat. -
5:25 - 5:31Everybody in the village is responsible
in the activity of building the boat. -
5:31 - 5:34Including the oldest person
in the village, -
5:34 - 5:38whose task is to build the fire
in the center of the village, -
5:38 - 5:44sit by that fire and remember
why they're building the boat. -
5:50 - 5:54We need to ask ourselves why?
-
5:54 - 5:59Particularly,
because I believe that our "Why?" -
5:59 - 6:04has been transported
from within the walls of our society -
6:04 - 6:08to a zone that is unknown.
-
6:08 - 6:12To a zone that now causes us
to step beyond this -
6:12 - 6:15into a new trash old.
-
6:15 - 6:21A new trash old that has new rules,
new regulations, new opportunities. -
6:21 - 6:25It is a new adventure.
-
6:25 - 6:28However I'm here to tell you good news.
-
6:28 - 6:34Good news that the new rules
are actually very old rules. -
6:36 - 6:41When we communicate,
-
6:41 - 6:45we should not do this,
-
6:45 - 6:48we should do this.
-
6:48 - 6:51When we communicate,
-
6:51 - 6:55it should be based in truth.
-
6:55 - 7:03When we act,
it needs to be based upon justice. -
7:03 - 7:08Justice and truth
becomes the new operating principles. -
7:08 - 7:11Old principles in a new world.
-
7:11 - 7:13Now, what you will realize is,
-
7:13 - 7:16those great mathematicians
in the audience will realize of course. -
7:16 - 7:21When you add this to this,
-
7:21 - 7:25we get this.
-
7:27 - 7:29This is the distinguishing factor today.
-
7:29 - 7:34This is now the difference
that will make the difference. -
7:36 - 7:40We have individuals
-
7:40 - 7:45competing with different organizations.
-
7:45 - 7:49This organization will fly this kite.
-
7:49 - 7:52This organization will fly this kite.
-
7:52 - 7:54All competing.
-
7:54 - 8:00We however will fly this kite.
-
8:06 - 8:11Old rules.
-
8:13 - 8:19Us, someone else.
-
8:19 - 8:25Do onto others
as you would see done onto yourself. -
8:28 - 8:29The golden rule.
-
8:29 - 8:31It amazes me
how many business books these days -
8:31 - 8:35spent 300 pages telling us this.
-
8:37 - 8:39Now, what's interesting about this,
-
8:39 - 8:42is that I believe,
-
8:42 - 8:48it is the quality of our relationships now
that we need to focus on. -
8:48 - 8:54It is the quality of our relationships
that is going to define what we deliver. -
8:55 - 8:59This is now what we focus on.
-
8:59 - 9:05And very quickly
I want to offer you a very simple model, -
9:05 - 9:08a model that I use in branding.
-
9:08 - 9:13And it's a model that you can use
for brands businesses or being. -
9:13 - 9:17And it looks like this.
-
9:17 - 9:19This here is an organization.
-
9:19 - 9:24And this here is somebody else.
-
9:24 - 9:26You could call it a customer.
-
9:26 - 9:28The organization and the customer.
-
9:28 - 9:29Now what happens is,
-
9:29 - 9:35the organization
first of all takes an action -
9:35 - 9:38towards the customer.
-
9:38 - 9:43The action results in a belief
-
9:43 - 9:47in the mind of the customer.
-
9:47 - 9:51What the organization then does,
is it communicates. -
9:53 - 9:59If the action
is not in parallel with the communication, -
10:00 - 10:02then we have a negative belief.
-
10:02 - 10:05In other words if we do something
and say something else, -
10:05 - 10:08we don't believe.
-
10:08 - 10:11If however these are in parallel,
-
10:11 - 10:13we have a positive belief.
-
10:13 - 10:19Again, there're many management books
that spend 300 pages telling us this. -
10:19 - 10:23The interesting thing about this
is the simplicity. -
10:23 - 10:29The simplicity of the A, B, C.
-
10:29 - 10:31A comes first.
-
10:31 - 10:35We do not communicate first,
we act first. -
10:35 - 10:40Now, we've already learnt that new rules
-
10:40 - 10:45means that our action needs to be just.
-
10:46 - 10:52Our communication needs to be truthful.
-
10:52 - 10:57And I can guarantee
if our actions are just, -
10:57 - 10:59our communication truthful,
-
10:59 - 11:04then we will form.
-
11:05 - 11:10This is the goal of every organization.
-
11:12 - 11:16ABC action orientated.
-
11:16 - 11:20Now, for you advanced listeners.
-
11:20 - 11:22You know who you are?
-
11:22 - 11:24For you advanced listeners,
-
11:24 - 11:29of course it's not just an ABC,
perhaps there's a D. -
11:29 - 11:32Because, it shouldn't be
one-way communication, -
11:32 - 11:36it should actually be two-way
communication as we all know. -
11:36 - 11:42And this then opens up into dialogue.
-
11:42 - 11:46This however is not achievable
unless we have this, -
11:46 - 11:48unless we have trust.
-
11:48 - 11:51Do not think that you can do this,
-
11:51 - 11:54we first need to form trust.
-
11:54 - 11:57Action, ladies and gentlemen,
this is all about action. -
11:57 - 12:00And the action is actually
based on learning. -
12:00 - 12:01Learning by doing.
-
12:01 - 12:04We act and we're learning from that.
-
12:04 - 12:06Let's talk about learning.
-
12:06 - 12:11This here is my dog in Ireland
that I was growing up with, -
12:11 - 12:13as you can see.
-
12:13 - 12:18And this here is the car
that he was very fond of chasing -
12:18 - 12:20along the street that we were living in.
-
12:20 - 12:24Until one day he was hit by a car.
-
12:24 - 12:26Now, we went to the doctor to do that,
-
12:26 - 12:30and surprisingly he was actually,
-
12:30 - 12:33recovered very quickly with one
of this things around his neck. -
12:33 - 12:36His bark got louder.
-
12:36 - 12:42And when we took this off him,
and he was let out again onto the street, -
12:42 - 12:47he learnt never to chase cars again
on that street. -
12:47 - 12:51Instead, he chased them on this street.
-
12:51 - 12:53(Laughter)
-
12:53 - 12:58Learning requires reflection,
-
12:58 - 13:03and reflection has to happen
at a mature level. -
13:03 - 13:07And one of the things
that can help with reflection, -
13:07 - 13:09is when we consider
-
13:09 - 13:13that the context gives meaning.
-
13:15 - 13:17This sequence makes sense.
-
13:17 - 13:21It's clearly making sense.
-
13:25 - 13:27This is now different.
-
13:27 - 13:33The context gives the meaning.
-
13:33 - 13:38In order to rich a more mature reflection
we need to step into a wider context. -
13:39 - 13:43And just so that we understand
where we are today, -
13:43 - 13:47we need to go back to Darwin,
-
13:47 - 13:51who talks about the survival
of the fittest. -
13:51 - 13:53Where one is against the other.
-
13:53 - 13:58It is locked in,
it is the competition based model. -
13:58 - 14:02Unfortunately too much of our activities
are based on this. -
14:02 - 14:08Darwin however only ever spoke
about the survival of the fittest, -
14:08 - 14:13within a greater context of cooperation.
-
14:14 - 14:19Our competition based model is excellent
-
14:19 - 14:25once operating
within a larger context of cooperation. -
14:25 - 14:28And the first step
that we can take towards this, -
14:28 - 14:30is to involve others.
-
14:30 - 14:33To consult with others in our activities.
-
14:33 - 14:37To consult with others
over what's important. -
14:37 - 14:43So, to bring this back again
to a very simple set of basis, -
14:44 - 14:47when we're doing
the ABC's of communication, -
14:47 - 14:50it is all about starting with action.
-
14:50 - 14:53We learn from our doing.
-
14:53 - 14:59Remembering our dog,
it needs to be based on reflection. -
14:59 - 15:02Our actions then we need to reflect upon.
-
15:02 - 15:05And to have a wider more mature context,
-
15:05 - 15:11we need to involve others
by consulting with them. -
15:11 - 15:15This is a model of reflection.
Learning by doing. -
15:15 - 15:19And this is a model with the consultation
of a rich understanding. -
15:21 - 15:25This means very simply,
-
15:25 - 15:29that when we want
to move from A to B, -
15:29 - 15:31any point on time,
-
15:31 - 15:36we move in A ARC.
-
15:36 - 15:41We act, we reflect and we consult.
-
15:45 - 15:50With this realization
that we're involved with others. -
15:50 - 15:53That we want to be part of others.
-
15:53 - 15:57That in fact we're interdependent.
-
15:57 - 16:00It means that we as independent parts
-
16:00 - 16:04need to become interdependent parts
of an organic whole. -
16:04 - 16:07This becomes our operating mantra.
-
16:07 - 16:09This is where we're moving to.
-
16:09 - 16:13And what this means is,
that as I rerolled, -
16:13 - 16:18you can put this content
in its most valuable place for you. -
16:18 - 16:24As I reroll, we can look
and consider how learning by doing -
16:24 - 16:28through a process of acting,
reflecting and consulting -
16:28 - 16:32creates an emergent value.
-
16:33 - 16:37It creates a richer meaning.
-
16:38 - 16:43It means
that when we're operating and reflecting, -
16:43 - 16:49it means that it based upon actions.
-
16:49 - 16:53Actions within a greater context
-
16:53 - 16:57that's creating a richer meaning.
-
16:57 - 17:02To do so means that the relationships
we're working with are more rich. -
17:02 - 17:07It means that we're focusing
on creating richer relationships. -
17:07 - 17:14And it means
that what was a very .. timeless quality, -
17:16 - 17:22now becomes a timely manifestation.
-
17:26 - 17:32Our truth plus justice creates trust.
-
17:34 - 17:37That is the difference
that will now make the difference. -
17:37 - 17:43It will help us navigates
beyond the walls of our current society. -
17:43 - 17:48It will help us remember
a different "Why?". -
17:48 - 17:54It will help us act in a greater sense
of unity and diversity, -
17:54 - 17:56that will create expediential value.
-
17:58 - 18:04All of which
reminds us of the journey that we're on. -
18:04 - 18:10A path where our actions,
-
18:10 - 18:15our beliefs,
-
18:15 - 18:18and our communication
-
18:18 - 18:21become key components along a path.
-
18:21 - 18:27A path which we operate in ARCs.
-
18:28 - 18:31We act, we reflect, we consult.
-
18:31 - 18:36A path of ARCs.
-
18:36 - 18:42And to go beyond the culture of context
means that at the heart of this, -
18:42 - 18:45our actions are just.
-
18:45 - 18:51Our beliefs are based on trust.
-
18:53 - 18:57And our communication is based on truth.
-
18:57 - 19:00Which I'll guarantee
-
19:00 - 19:04will create a compiling why
-
19:04 - 19:10and remind us that success is not a point,
-
19:10 - 19:13success is a path.
-
19:13 - 19:14Thank you very much.
-
19:14 - 19:15(Applause)
