Cindy Gallop: Make love, not porn (Adult content)
-
0:15 - 0:18I date younger men,
-
0:18 - 0:20predominantly men in their 20s.
-
0:20 - 0:22And when I date younger men,
-
0:22 - 0:24I have sex with younger men.
-
0:24 - 0:26And when I have sex with younger men
-
0:26 - 0:29I encounter, very directly and personally,
-
0:29 - 0:33the real ramifications of the creeping ubiquity
-
0:33 - 0:36of hardcore pornography in our culture.
-
0:36 - 0:39So, in an era where
-
0:39 - 0:41hardcore porn is more freely
-
0:41 - 0:44and widely available on the Internet than ever before,
-
0:44 - 0:47and where kids are therefore able to access it
-
0:47 - 0:50at a younger and younger age than ever before,
-
0:50 - 0:52there is an entire generation growing up
-
0:52 - 0:55that believes that what you see in hardcore pornograpy
-
0:55 - 0:58is the way that you have sex.
-
0:58 - 1:00And this is particularly exacerbated
-
1:00 - 1:04because we live in a puritanical, double-standards culture
-
1:04 - 1:07where people believe that a teen abstinence campaign
-
1:07 - 1:09will actually work,
-
1:09 - 1:11where parents are too embarrassed
-
1:11 - 1:13to have conversations about sex with their children,
-
1:13 - 1:16and where educational institutions
-
1:16 - 1:19are terrified of being politically incorrect
-
1:19 - 1:21if they pick up those conversations.
-
1:21 - 1:23And so it's not surprising
-
1:23 - 1:25that hardcore pornography, de facto,
-
1:25 - 1:28has become sex education.
-
1:28 - 1:32Now, as a mature, experienced, confident, older woman,
-
1:32 - 1:34when I encounter this
-
1:34 - 1:38I have no problem realizing that a certain amount of reeducation,
-
1:38 - 1:41rehabilitation and reorientation has to take place.
-
1:41 - 1:44(Applause)
-
1:44 - 1:47Anybody who is offended by sexually explicit language,
-
1:47 - 1:49please cover their ears now,
-
1:49 - 1:51and I will raise my hand when you can uncover them.
-
1:51 - 1:53So, I have no problem
-
1:53 - 1:58responding, as I have regularly had to,
-
1:58 - 2:00"Actually no, thank you very much, I would much rather
-
2:00 - 2:03you did not come on my face."
-
2:03 - 2:07My concern is both with a young guy who believes,
-
2:07 - 2:09because hardcore pornography has taught him,
-
2:09 - 2:12but my concern is particularly with a young girl
-
2:12 - 2:14whose boyfriend wants to come on her face,
-
2:14 - 2:16she does not want him to come on her face,
-
2:16 - 2:18but hardcore porn has taught her
-
2:18 - 2:20that all men love coming on women's faces,
-
2:20 - 2:22all women love having their faces come on,
-
2:22 - 2:24and therefore she must let him come on her face,
-
2:24 - 2:27and she must pretend to like it.
-
2:27 - 2:32(Laughter)
-
2:32 - 2:34So, I am launching, at TED today ...
-
2:34 - 2:38I am unveiling MakeLoveNotPorn.com.
-
2:38 - 2:40(Applause)
-
2:40 - 2:45This is a website that posts the myths of hardcore porn,
-
2:45 - 2:49and balances them with the reality.
-
2:49 - 2:51And it's important to say, by the way,
-
2:51 - 2:54that this is absolutely not about judgement.
-
2:54 - 2:56This is not about good and bad.
-
2:56 - 2:58Sex is the area of human experience
-
2:58 - 3:02that embraces the vastest possible range of proclivities.
-
3:02 - 3:04This is also not anti-porn.
-
3:04 - 3:06I am a fan of hardcore porn;
-
3:06 - 3:08I watch it regularly myself,
-
3:08 - 3:10although my overriding criteria when selecting it
-
3:10 - 3:12has to be to find something
-
3:12 - 3:15that does not resemble, overly, open-heart surgery.
-
3:15 - 3:17(Laughter)
-
3:17 - 3:20But because the porn industry is
-
3:20 - 3:22driven by men, funded by men,
-
3:22 - 3:25managed by men, directed by men and targeted at men,
-
3:25 - 3:28porn tends to present one worldview.
-
3:28 - 3:31Porn says, "This is the way it is."
-
3:31 - 3:35And what I want to say is, "Not necessarily."
-
3:35 - 3:39So, please go to MakeLoveNotPorn.com.
-
3:39 - 3:42I want to ask the TED audience to do two things.
-
3:42 - 3:44Be aware this is an issue,
-
3:44 - 3:47because I would never have realized it if I had not encountered it myself.
-
3:47 - 3:50And please visit the website.
-
3:50 - 3:52Please see what you think.
-
3:52 - 3:54(Laughter)
-
3:54 - 3:59Comment. And please pass it on.
-
3:59 - 4:02Please send the link to anybody you think would be intereseted
-
4:02 - 4:04and use it to start a dialogue.
-
4:04 - 4:12Use it to reframe an open, healthy conversation around sex,
-
4:12 - 4:14in order to help and facilitate
-
4:14 - 4:18open, healthy and better sexual relationships. Thank you very much.
-
4:18 - 4:23(Applause)

- Cindy Gallop: Make love, not porn (Adult content)
- Description:
-
At TED2009, audience member Cindy Gallop gave a 4-minute presentation that became one of the event's most talked about. Speaking from her personal experience, she argued that hardcore pornography had distorted the way a generation of young men think about sex. She talked about how she was fighting back with the launch of a website -- http://makelovenotporn.com -- to correct the myths being propagated.
