Elderly Animals: Photographs by Isa Leshko
-
0:03 - 0:08[MUSIC, melodic piano and guitar throughout...]
-
0:40 - 0:43A couple years prior to beginning the project
-
0:43 - 0:46i had spent a year in New Jersey
-
0:46 - 0:49caring for both my parents,
-
0:49 - 0:52my mum has alzheimer's disease
-
0:52 - 0:54and during that period
-
0:54 - 0:57i made a conscious decision
-
0:57 - 1:00not to photograph my family.
-
1:02 - 1:06it did though have a big emotional impact on me
-
1:06 - 1:08and i knew, somewhere,
-
1:08 - 1:10it was gonna emerge in my work.
-
1:12 - 1:17About a year after, uh, that time in new jersey,
-
1:17 - 1:20i was visiting a relatives property,
-
1:20 - 1:24and she had a very old horse
-
1:24 - 1:25named Petey.
-
1:25 - 1:29i was just fascinated, mesmerized with Petey,
-
1:29 - 1:33and, uh, fell in love with him,
-
1:33 - 1:36and spent the afternoon photographing him.
-
1:36 - 1:41But i didnt think that there was the basis
-
1:41 - 1:44of a long term project there.
-
1:44 - 1:46i was thinking of it as more therapy,
-
1:46 - 1:50it organically developed into a project.
-
2:00 - 2:01There have been points when
-
2:01 - 2:06i've fought back tears as im shooting.
-
2:06 - 2:08Um, the rooster, in particular,
-
2:08 - 2:12was just in such a sad state
-
2:12 - 2:14when i encountered him.
-
2:16 - 2:18i was just feeling
-
2:18 - 2:19and not thinking
-
2:19 - 2:20when i was with him
-
2:20 - 2:23i wanted to make sure that
-
2:23 - 2:26i honoured the experience.
-
2:43 - 2:49i wanted the images to be unflinching in their detail
-
2:50 - 2:55i didnt want there to be any risk of sentimentality
-
2:55 - 2:56with the work.
-
2:58 - 3:02Because it feels to me disrespectful, uh,
-
3:02 - 3:05to who the animal really is.
-
3:07 - 3:08In a lot of respects these images
-
3:08 - 3:10say as much about me
-
3:10 - 3:13as they do about my subjects.
-
3:23 - 3:25The caregivers have found a lot of comfort
-
3:25 - 3:27in the images,
-
3:27 - 3:31particularly after their animals have passed.
-
3:33 - 3:37That there is an image that they feel
-
3:37 - 3:40has really shown who their animal was.
-
3:43 - 3:47i'm looking at mortality, and aging,
-
3:47 - 3:50and that's not easy subject material.
-
3:51 - 3:55Some of the subjects do seem sad, and tired.
-
3:57 - 3:59Some of them are downright defiant,
-
3:59 - 4:01and stare down the camera.
-
4:06 - 4:07I think these images
-
4:07 - 4:13are testaments to survival and endurance,
-
4:13 - 4:18and finding meaning and joy in life,
-
4:18 - 4:23in the face of physical limitations and challenges.
