Hysteria - Muse (Songs Guitar Lesson ST-326) How to play
-
0:44 - 0:48Hey, how're you doin? Justin here. In this lesson today,
-
0:48 - 0:51we're checking out "Hysteria" by Muse.
-
0:51 - 0:54That little riff that I just played there
was actually the bass riff, -
0:54 - 0:56it's not really the guitar riff.
-
0:56 - 0:57But I'm going to show it to you anyway because
-
0:57 - 1:00it sounds pretty cool.
So we're going to check out that little riff first. -
1:00 - 1:03Then we're going to check out the actual kind of main
-
1:03 - 1:05melody part that he plays,
check out the chords in the chorus -
1:05 - 1:07and I'll show you the solo as well, for good measure.
-
1:07 - 1:11Because it's a pretty funky little solo.
So, without any further ado, -
1:11 - 1:14let's get stuck in and check out that first riff.
-
1:14 - 1:28. . .
-
1:28 - 1:30Okay, nice and slowly, let's check it out.
-
1:30 - 1:40. . .
-
1:40 - 1:42There, this is obviously the tenth fret
-
1:42 - 1:45. . .
-
1:45 - 1:46Ten to twelve
-
1:46 - 1:47. . .
-
1:47 - 1:47Open again
-
1:47 - 1:48. . .
-
1:48 - 1:49Ten
-
1:49 - 1:49. . .
-
1:49 - 1:50Open
-
1:50 - 1:51. . .
-
1:51 - 1:52Seven
-
1:52 - 1:53. . .
-
1:53 - 1:57open again, then we've got this
eight, eight, seven, five, seven -
1:57 - 2:06. . .
-
2:06 - 2:09That's the first bar.
Definitely worth practicing that bit by itself. -
2:09 - 2:11Then we're onto the next one.
We've got now an E pedal -
2:11 - 2:12. . .
-
2:12 - 2:13an open E
-
2:13 - 2:18. . .
-
2:18 - 2:19which is all on the thickest string,
-
2:19 - 2:22except for the last note there,
the note A up at the twelfth fret -
2:22 - 2:27. . .
-
2:27 - 2:28This is obviously the tenth here
-
2:28 - 2:31. . .
-
2:31 - 2:33similar sort of feel to the other one
-
2:33 - 2:40. . .
-
2:40 - 2:42the twelfth and fifteenth fret there
-
2:42 - 2:46. . .
-
2:46 - 2:48Now we're up to the D string
-
2:48 - 3:09. . .
-
3:09 - 3:12Sometimes I'm changing what finger I play that note with,
-
3:12 - 3:15it doesn't really matter.
And then we finish the same as we start. -
3:15 - 3:19. . .
-
3:19 - 3:21Except the first note of that's missing actually.
-
3:21 - 3:27. . .
-
3:27 - 3:28So we're having this
-
3:28 - 3:32. . .
-
3:32 - 3:35It's kind of this here is the first beat of the next bar
-
3:35 - 3:37. . .
-
3:37 - 3:39because it's an octave above the A anyway.
-
3:39 - 3:50. . .
-
3:50 - 3:53When it comes to the main guitar riff,
it's really important that you make sure -
3:53 - 3:55that you get your muting good with both hands.
-
3:55 - 3:57First of all, when you're playing the octave
-
3:57 - 3:58. . .
-
3:58 - 4:01you should be able to strum all of the notes, but all of
-
4:01 - 4:05the notes are muted, except the two that you want.
-
4:05 - 4:07. . .
-
4:07 - 4:10And you're going to use that
down, down, up, down, down, up pattern. -
4:10 - 4:12. . .
-
4:12 - 4:15Then mute all of the strings
with the outside of your palm here, -
4:15 - 4:18sists on the strings to keep them all quiet
-
4:18 - 4:19. . .
-
4:19 - 4:22and then you're going to do a little bend here
at the twelfth fret -
4:22 - 4:24. . .
-
4:24 - 4:26to the tenth fret. So it's semitone bend
-
4:26 - 4:29. . .
-
4:29 - 4:30and down to the tenth fret.
-
4:30 - 4:33Now, that pattern just moves down now, so twelve
-
4:33 - 4:38. . .
-
4:38 - 4:40that's first finger on the eleventh fret
-
4:40 - 4:41. . .
-
4:41 - 4:43first finger on the eighth fret
-
4:43 - 4:49. . .
-
4:49 - 4:52last time, the bend is going up and down a couple of times.
-
4:52 - 4:54. . .
-
4:54 - 4:55Same again
-
4:55 - 5:11. . .
-
5:11 - 5:13Then he's just hitting an open A string
-
5:13 - 5:14. . .
-
5:14 - 5:16and the seventh fret of the fourth string
-
5:16 - 5:17. . .
-
5:17 - 5:20octaves of the eighth. Then, the guitar is quiet.
-
5:20 - 5:22All of the way through the verse, comes in with
-
5:22 - 5:24. . .
-
5:24 - 5:25big muted hits.
-
5:25 - 5:27So grabbing the whole fingerboard with your fingers
-
5:27 - 5:29. . .
-
5:29 - 5:30and hitting
-
5:30 - 5:33. . .
-
5:33 - 5:37then we're into the chorus.
Now, the chorus, the chords are power chords. -
5:37 - 5:38C
-
5:38 - 5:39. . .
-
5:39 - 5:40G
-
5:40 - 5:42. . .
-
5:42 - 5:43D
-
5:43 - 5:45. . .
-
5:45 - 5:46and A
-
5:46 - 5:59. . .
-
5:59 - 6:02And it's kind of strummed unusually for power chords
-
6:02 - 6:05if you just check out the strumming hand now
for a second, here it is -
6:05 - 6:18. . .
-
6:18 - 6:21Now, I do a little trick here as well, which you might like,
-
6:21 - 6:23where I'm playing a C chord.
Now this is, and I don't think what -
6:23 - 6:26Matt Bellamy is playing on the record but it sounds pretty,
-
6:26 - 6:28sounds like it. I think maybe it's a bass or a synthesiser
-
6:28 - 6:30or something, but I go
-
6:30 - 6:33. . .
-
6:33 - 6:34I put a little
-
6:34 - 6:38. . .
-
6:38 - 6:39a bend in from the second fret
-
6:39 - 6:41. . .
-
6:41 - 6:42and then up to the third
-
6:42 - 7:04. . .
-
7:04 - 7:07And finishing with a little riff, same as the bass one
-
7:07 - 7:12. . .
-
7:12 - 7:15which is of course the one with the E pedal
the we learned already. -
7:15 - 7:22. . .
-
7:22 - 7:24And then it's back into that octaves thing.
-
7:24 - 7:27Then the guitar goes quiet, then it plays a chorus.
Then it plays the little riff again and then, -
7:27 - 7:30we're into the solo!
-
7:30 - 7:33I'm going to do the solo in two halves.
The first half looks like this: -
7:33 - 7:46. . .
-
7:46 - 7:50Okay, let's go through that now, just really nice and slowly.
-
7:50 - 7:51Got here fourteen and twelve
-
7:51 - 8:14. . .
-
8:14 - 8:18Picking is alternate throughout.
I'm not going to go through all of the frets with you. -
8:18 - 8:19I'm sure there's plenty of tabs around for this
-
8:19 - 8:21and you can probably see it anyway.
-
8:21 - 8:23That's, we've got this nice little run
-
8:23 - 8:28. . .
-
8:28 - 8:30Second part of the solo is based on arpeggio's.
-
8:30 - 8:53. . .
-
8:53 - 8:56Hope you enjoyed the look at Hysteria by Muse.
-
8:56 - 8:59Fantastic rock tune and if you're playing in a band
or getting a band together, -
8:59 - 9:01it's a really, really great fun one to play.
-
9:01 - 9:05Your bass player will love you for it.
If you can play, and he'll hate you for it -
9:05 - 9:08if you can't. Matt Bellamy's guitar playing is most awesome
-
9:08 - 9:11and in this tune, there's loads
and loads of cool things to learn. -
9:11 - 9:14I hope I didn't go too fast through the solo.
-
9:14 - 9:16There's going to be plenty of tabs around. If not, just make
-
9:16 - 9:19your own tab really slowly by watching the video.
-
9:19 - 9:23It's not too difficult. Make sure that you get your alternate
-
9:23 - 9:26picking all of the way through this tune.
All of those fast things are all alternate. -
9:26 - 9:30Continuously alternate, you know,
down-up picking, whatever. -
9:30 - 9:34Making sure that you pick down on the beat of course.
-
9:34 - 9:38Yeah, lots of good fun. Hope you enjoyed that.
Back for plenty more guitar lessons soon. -
9:38 - 9:40If you get stuck on any of this, check out the forum.
-
9:40 - 9:43There'll be plenty of people to help. And I'll put also,
-
9:43 - 9:46some additional notes that'll help you play the tune
on my website. -
9:46 - 9:49Take care of yourselves and I'll see you some time
real soon. Bye bye!

- Hysteria - Muse (Songs Guitar Lesson ST-326) How to play
- Description:
-
In this guitar lesson we check out Hysteria by Muse. I show you the main riff (usually played on bass) the main guitar riffs and a quick look at the solo. No time to go right into the solo and name every note, I think there is enough for you to get it if you write it down as I go... I hope so anyhow.
If you need help then check out the forum.
