The journey over yellow envelopes | Jinsuke Mizuno | TEDxHamamatsu
-
0:29 - 0:34Everyone has something important.
-
0:34 - 0:39Such as policy, motto,
whatever it's called -
0:39 - 0:44The meaning may also be various.
-
0:44 - 0:47Mine is this.
-
0:47 - 0:51"The journey over yellow envelopes"
-
0:51 - 0:52Though nobody has ever done,
-
0:52 - 0:54and nobody had asked to do,
-
0:54 - 0:56but somebody must hope to do so,
-
0:56 - 0:59I will devote all my energy to do so.
-
0:59 - 1:03This is what I think a great deal of.
-
1:03 - 1:06So, what do I like most?
-
1:06 - 1:09Curry rice, of course.
-
1:09 - 1:11Mix these two.
-
1:11 - 1:14I mean, carry out what I think
-
1:14 - 1:17a great deal of with what
I have a passion for. -
1:17 - 1:20Then, my tiny journey starts here.
-
1:24 - 1:27The reason why l absorbed in curry rice
-
1:27 - 1:31was a curry restaurant called "Bombay".
-
1:31 - 1:35It was here, my hometown Hamamatsu
-
1:35 - 1:38and run by Mr. Nagata.
-
1:38 - 1:42I had been there through elementary school
entry and high school graduation. -
1:42 - 1:46I ate, ate, and ate.
-
1:46 - 1:50I was quite a good customer.
(Laughter) -
1:50 - 1:54I became crazy about curry rice by then.
-
1:54 - 1:59Mr. Nagata really influenced my life.
-
2:00 - 2:05A curry chef who has so strong influence
that someone's life will be changed. -
2:05 - 2:08He is not only one
but there are many chefs like him. -
2:08 - 2:12What a wonderful thing this is.
-
2:12 - 2:17One encounter and parting with a chef,
Mr Ishihara was another impact on me. -
2:18 - 2:20He ran a curry restaurant "Ganage"
-
2:20 - 2:23and I loved it.
-
2:23 - 2:28Mr. Ishihara's passion
for Indian curry was extreme. -
2:28 - 2:32When I visited, he always talked
on curry beside me by the table. -
2:32 - 2:36Never ending curry story
-
2:36 - 2:38but I really enjoyed listening to him.
-
2:38 - 2:43However, such a good relationship
between us didn't last long. -
2:43 - 2:47He passed away by cancer in2007.
-
2:48 - 2:52I lost my words on hearing
the news of his death. -
2:52 - 2:56I had another thing in my mind
at the same time,though. -
2:56 - 3:01There must be chefs who devote their lives
to curry like him all over Japan. -
3:01 - 3:04I'd like to let more people know
about such chefs. -
3:04 - 3:09So, I should visit curry restaurants
in the whole country. -
3:09 - 3:12Nobody has ever done.
-
3:12 - 3:13Nobody asked me to do so.
-
3:13 - 3:20But there must be people who want to know.
So I made up my mind to try. -
3:20 - 3:22I started going to interview at right.
-
3:22 - 3:25First , in Saitama prefecture,
-
3:25 - 3:29I visited Mr. Komori
to listen to his story. -
3:29 - 3:31"When did you meet curry?"
-
3:31 - 3:33"Where did you learn to cook curry?"
-
3:33 - 3:36"How did you decide
to start a curry restaurant?" -
3:36 - 3:41"What was pleasure?"
"What was a hard experience?" -
3:41 - 3:45"How do you face to curry now?"
-
3:45 - 3:51"Where will you head with your curry?"
-
3:52 - 3:54At first, he got confused.
-
3:54 - 3:56Of course. Suddenly I visited
-
3:56 - 3:58and asked all sorts of questions.
-
3:58 - 4:04However, little by little he opened up
to me as I visited several times. -
4:04 - 4:08I decided to publish
a book of the episodes -
4:08 - 4:12that Mr. Komori told.
-
4:12 - 4:15A paperback with twenty pages or so,
-
4:15 - 4:18a tiny book.
-
4:20 - 4:22First of all, I wanted to deliver
-
4:22 - 4:25this edition to curry chefs
all over Japan. -
4:25 - 4:29Then, how do I deliver them?
-
4:30 - 4:33Now the yellow envelopes appear.
-
4:34 - 4:37Sending letters in the envelopes.
-
4:37 - 4:41Such an analog way is not trendy, is it?
-
4:41 - 4:44Because now we have several methods
such as email or internet. -
4:44 - 4:47However, I thought it was best.
-
4:47 - 4:50"Happy yellow envelopes."
-
4:50 - 4:54These are sent to curry restaurant
all over Japan. -
4:54 - 4:57My imagination was getting bigger.
-
4:57 - 4:59It must be wonderful.
-
4:59 - 5:02Do you think
it is just a self- satisfied feeling? -
5:02 - 5:05Why do you think I chose yellow envelopes?
-
5:05 - 5:09Well, I suppose many of them must think
"it is because yellow is the curry color"? -
5:09 - 5:11There is another reason.
-
5:11 - 5:16It is because this color is cheapest.
-
5:16 - 5:18(Laughter)
-
5:18 - 5:20I bought 100 letter sets.
-
5:20 - 5:25I sent the books to 70 curry restaurant
-
5:25 - 5:27with a greeting card.
-
5:27 - 5:33"Hello. I made this book as a hobby.
-
5:33 - 5:35Please read this.
-
5:35 - 5:39This is my first envelope to send,
-
5:40 - 5:44however, this is not last.
-
5:45 - 5:50I will continue sending you such
envelope with every new book." -
5:51 - 5:55A kind of threatening letter.
(Laughter) -
5:55 - 5:58The yellow envelopes I freely sent
-
5:58 - 6:03were, of course, delivered
to curry restaurant all over Japan. -
6:03 - 6:07What kinds of responses I received?
To be honest, I expected a lot. -
6:07 - 6:12There would be a round
of applause everywhere. "Well done!" -
6:13 - 6:16However, it was totaly different
from my expectation. -
6:16 - 6:19I visited a curry restaurant
I sent the envelope. -
6:19 - 6:21The chef asked me,
-
6:21 - 6:23"Mr Mizuno, what are you doing
-
6:23 - 6:26about the yellow envelope you sent?"
-
6:26 - 6:28"That is my lifework.
-
6:28 - 6:31I wanted everyone to know about the chef."
-
6:31 - 6:32"That's all?"
-
6:32 - 6:34"Yes, that's all"
-
6:34 - 6:36"Really?"
-
6:36 - 6:40He seemed full of suspicion.
-
6:40 - 6:42"What is the merit you gain
by doing such a thing?" -
6:42 - 6:47I felt like I was doubted wrongfully.
-
6:47 - 6:52I visited another curry restaurant
and the chef told me another thing. -
6:52 - 6:57"Which publisher had the idea
of the book in the yellow envelope?" -
6:57 - 6:59"Ah, it was mine."
-
6:59 - 7:01"No kidding!
-
7:01 - 7:05I know the book will be sold soon
at bookstore around." -
7:05 - 7:07"No, I will not do so.
-
7:07 - 7:10"Really?"
-
7:10 - 7:13I was so shocked.
-
7:13 - 7:18What I did at most
was a totally fruitless effort. -
7:20 - 7:26I did not give up sending
yellow envelopes though. -
7:26 - 7:29The second envelope, the third envelope...
-
7:29 - 7:32this is not a happy envelope
-
7:32 - 7:35but an unhappy letter.
(Laughter) -
7:38 - 7:40It cannot be helped.
-
7:40 - 7:43Only I could do was continuing.
-
7:44 - 7:47I rang a chef
-
7:47 - 7:50to ask for listening to his story.
-
7:50 - 7:55However, he rejected on the phone.
-
7:55 - 8:00"No. No, thanks. I cannot afford."
-
8:00 - 8:04I was never paid from those
who I interviewed for this activity. -
8:04 - 8:07No travel expense, no lodging expense.
-
8:07 - 8:10Even cost of publishing.
I pay by myself for everything. -
8:10 - 8:14This cheap yellow envelope,
a stamp to send it, -
8:14 - 8:16I did buy them all.
-
8:16 - 8:21The chefs never understood this.
-
8:21 - 8:25Of course, I never think
that paying everything is wonderful. -
8:25 - 8:28Only I had no other ideas.
-
8:28 - 8:32If I gain money by sending envelopes,
-
8:32 - 8:34they may understand.
-
8:34 - 8:38But I am willing to pay.
-
8:38 - 8:41Why? What's for?
Is this something suspicious? -
8:41 - 8:45Is there something hidden?
-
8:45 - 8:49No wonder they may think, is it?
-
8:49 - 8:53Even so, I continued sending
yellow envelopes. -
8:53 - 8:57I am rather stubborn.
(Laughter) -
8:57 - 9:01Forth, fifth, sixth...
-
9:01 - 9:04Are your heart pounding?
Mine was always pounding when sending. -
9:04 - 9:06Is everything alright?
-
9:06 - 9:12But I made up my mind to do my best.
I cannot give up easily. -
9:12 - 9:16Little by little, though,
their reactions began to change. -
9:17 - 9:19What made me happy was
-
9:19 - 9:24that some people wrote in return
to the yellow envelope. -
9:24 - 9:28Such as "I was moved by the chef's life",
-
9:28 - 9:33or "It was good. I'm looking
forward to the next one." -
9:33 - 9:36There is one episode,
-
9:36 - 9:39"Customers were so few that I was
thinking of closing my restaurant. -
9:39 - 9:45But some chefs manage to keep running
even though their situation is harder. -
9:45 - 9:52I was encouraged.
I will keep my restaurant for a while." -
9:52 - 9:57Unlike I intended, this yellow envelope
saved that restaurant. -
9:58 - 10:04A friend of mine went to one restaurant
and heard of such a conversation, -
10:04 - 10:08"I'm happy every time when I find
a yellow envelope in my mailbox. -
10:09 - 10:13God give me a gift if I keep working hard,
-
10:13 - 10:15I feel like this."
-
10:15 - 10:19This is not a fiction. A real story.
-
10:19 - 10:24G, God? God!?
-
10:24 - 10:30This is exaggeration, isn't it?
But I'm so happy I want to boast this. -
10:30 - 10:34This is why I'm telling you here.
(Laughter) -
10:35 - 10:38The more this series is published,
-
10:38 - 10:43the more yellow envelopes are kept.
-
10:43 - 10:4916 chefs have told their stories
in this yellow envelope series now. -
10:51 - 10:52Their lives are
-
10:52 - 10:55really
-
10:55 - 10:59wonderful and precious.
-
10:59 - 11:01See the photos.
-
11:01 - 11:05These lined-up faces,
they seem to be only middle-aged guys. -
11:05 - 11:08If I met them on the street, I mean,
some grim faced men, -
11:08 - 11:10I'd not like them to talk to me.
(Laughter) -
11:10 - 11:14But all these guys are brilliant chefs
-
11:14 - 11:21who devote their lives to curry,
and their stories are very interesting. -
11:21 - 11:24For example, Mr. Hayakawa
in Toyama prefecture. -
11:24 - 11:28He really loved one old curry restaurant
in Tokyo. -
11:29 - 11:32He loved so much he could not help
doing something unbelievable. -
11:32 - 11:37He returned to Toyama and started
exactly the same curry restaurant -
11:37 - 11:40without telling the founder.
-
11:40 - 11:44Everything is same;
the appearance, logo, name. -
11:45 - 11:46Can you believe it?
-
11:46 - 11:49I cannot believe.
-
11:49 - 11:52My father and mother would scold me
if I did such a thing. -
11:53 - 11:56However, he told his passion
to the founder then, -
11:57 - 12:01was set up in business and keep running
as a franchised restaurant. -
12:02 - 12:06Sounds a fiction, but a real story.
-
12:06 - 12:08Mr. Seguchi in Oita prefecture.
-
12:08 - 12:10He is -
look, his face is nice, isn't it? -
12:10 - 12:14He was drunk after drinking a lot.
(Laughter) -
12:14 - 12:18He had learned in two famous Indian
restaurants, -
12:18 - 12:21now he is a brilliant curry chef.
-
12:21 - 12:26But when he started his own restaurant
in Oita, not many customer came. -
12:27 - 12:30He could not afford to pay the rent.
-
12:30 - 12:34In fact, he had lived a hard life
for eight years. -
12:34 - 12:35I say once more, eight years.
-
12:35 - 12:37What did he do then?
-
12:37 - 12:40He delivered newspaper
early in the morning, -
12:40 - 12:43to pay the rent and keep the restaurant.
-
12:43 - 12:46The story made me feel faint.
-
12:46 - 12:48An indomitable spirit was hidden
-
12:48 - 12:53on the back of this peaceful smile.
-
12:55 - 12:59The more yellow envelopes are delivered
-
12:59 - 13:01the more chefs I meet
to listen to their stories. -
13:01 - 13:03It means,
-
13:03 - 13:07the more curry chefs read this series.
-
13:07 - 13:11When it started, the number was 70,
and now more than 150 restaurants. -
13:11 - 13:13Although packing work is hard,
-
13:13 - 13:17this is a cry of joy.
-
13:17 - 13:22There are something unhappy, if anything.
-
13:22 - 13:25Sometimes, some the envelopes
returned to me. -
13:25 - 13:27This is because no one could receive them,
-
13:27 - 13:30which means the curry restaurants
had been closed, -
13:30 - 13:34and the chefs were nowhere.
-
13:34 - 13:39It is really sad that I won't be able
to my favorite chefs any more. -
13:39 - 13:42Well, now the journey
over the yellow envelope -
13:42 - 13:46came to another step.
-
13:46 - 13:50The chefs visited each other.
-
13:51 - 13:55Soon after, drinking parties were held.
I was invited too. -
13:55 - 13:57The chefs I long for gathers,
-
13:57 - 14:01I join them, and talked with them
about curry while drinking. -
14:02 - 14:05I appreciate I'm alive.
(Laughter) -
14:05 - 14:09Do you think it's exaggerate?
-
14:09 - 14:12The more chefs joined.
5, 10, 15... -
14:12 - 14:17Sometimes nearly 20 chefs came.
-
14:17 - 14:21This is, in the closed curry industry,
-
14:21 - 14:25a new relationship connected
by the yellow envelopes. -
14:25 - 14:30I made one proposal then.
-
14:30 - 14:33"As many curry chefs gather,
-
14:33 - 14:37why don't we hold a workshop
along to one theme?" -
14:37 - 14:39"It's a naive idea. Shall we?"
-
14:39 - 14:44All the chefs agreed
and the workshop started. -
14:44 - 14:48The theme was, for example,
"How to saute onion". -
14:48 - 14:49Two hours, three hours.
-
14:49 - 14:51The discussion never ended.
-
14:51 - 14:53The next theme;
-
14:53 - 14:57"The right order of putting spices"
-
14:57 - 14:59Two hours, three hours.
-
14:59 - 15:02How maniac we are.
(Laughter) -
15:02 - 15:07Now more than 20 workshops were held
and still continued. -
15:07 - 15:10Another new proposal came out.
-
15:10 - 15:13"This is a chance, where so many chefs
are together, -
15:13 - 15:18why don't we have an event once a year
closing each restaurant?" -
15:18 - 15:20"Good idea!"
-
15:20 - 15:22Then, curry events started.
-
15:22 - 15:28In the event, every chef cooks best
and serve them in one dish. -
15:28 - 15:32What was held in workshop,
quite closed space, -
15:32 - 15:36is now an big event in which curry fans
from all over Japan can enjoy. -
15:36 - 15:39"The yellow envelopes grow up"
-
15:39 - 15:42The yellow envelope created
-
15:42 - 15:45communications with
several kinds of people. -
15:45 - 15:50This is what I had never imagined
when I sent the first ones. -
15:50 - 15:55This tiny journey will keep growing up
in the future. -
15:55 - 15:58I don't know anymore.
-
15:58 - 16:01What will happen.
Where is the goal. -
16:01 - 16:05I really look forward to the future.
-
16:05 - 16:07On the other hand,
-
16:07 - 16:10I started to find a new envelope.
-
16:11 - 16:13Nobody has ever done,
Nobody asked me to do so, -
16:14 - 16:16but somebody must hope to do so.
-
16:16 - 16:21There may be more things
in the curry world. -
16:21 - 16:24As nobody has done,
you must be worried before starting. -
16:24 - 16:29As nobody asked you to do so,
some people may doubt your activity. -
16:29 - 16:32Imagine, though, somebody must hope
to do so somewhere... -
16:33 - 16:35If you are sure so,
-
16:35 - 16:39The activity is definitely worth doing.
-
16:40 - 16:44The next envelope I will find
is not yellow any more. -
16:44 - 16:48Maybe it is blue, maybe it is red,
-
16:48 - 16:51sometimes it is rose-color,
-
16:51 - 16:54sometimes it is rainbow-color.
-
16:54 - 16:57Do you think "rainbow color is too much"?
-
16:57 - 17:00Then, it can be marble pattern
or polka dots. -
17:00 - 17:02Nevertheless, if you are interested
-
17:02 - 17:04in such activities,
-
17:04 - 17:07why don't you find your envelope?
-
17:08 - 17:10I will do for curry rice.
-
17:10 - 17:13How about you?
-
17:13 - 17:15If you want to do for curry rice,
-
17:15 - 17:20let's find a new envelope with me.
-
17:20 - 17:23(Applause)
- Title:
- The journey over yellow envelopes | Jinsuke Mizuno | TEDxHamamatsu
- Description:
-
Curry is the communication tool for Jinsuke Mizuno. The start of his action was the news of one chef's death whom he was close to. To do his best to what no one has ever done, no one has ever asked to do, but someone may hope to do. You must be fascinated in his action from his belief and the journey over the yellow envelopes.
