about the famous inventor, -
0:11 - 0:14Alexander
Graham Bell. -
0:14 - 0:19Alexander Graham Bell, best known
for his invention of the telephone, -
0:19 - 0:25was born on March 3, 1847
in Edinburgh, Scotland. -
0:25 - 0:29Young Alexander,
called 'Aleck' by his family, -
0:29 - 0:34was a curious child who was
very interested in the science of sound. -
0:34 - 0:39He loved music,
and taught himself to play the piano. -
0:39 - 0:44His father taught elocution,
or how to speak clearly and correctly. -
0:44 - 0:48When he was a teenager,
his mother began to lose her hearing, -
0:48 - 0:53and that encouraged him
to learn even more about sound. -
0:54 - 0:58At the age of twelve,
Aleck created his first invention. -
0:58 - 1:02His best friend's family
operated a flour mill. -
1:02 - 1:06At the time, it took a lot of work
to remove the husks from the wheat, -
1:06 - 1:08but with some
paddles and brushes, -
1:08 - 1:12Alexander Graham Bell
invented a dehusking machine -
1:12 - 1:15that made the job
much simpler. -
1:15 - 1:18In return, his friend's father
gave him a small workshop -
1:18 - 1:22to experiment
with his inventions. -
1:23 - 1:25Although he was
homeschooled as a child, -
1:25 - 1:29Alexander attended
high school in Edinburgh. -
1:29 - 1:33He didn't do very well in school,
and left before he finished it. -
1:33 - 1:38Afterward, he went to live
with his grandfather in London. -
1:38 - 1:39His grandfather
encouraged him -
1:39 - 1:44and helped him gain an appreciation
for learning, and soon after, -
1:44 - 1:46Bell began teaching
elocution like his father, -
1:46 - 1:50and helping deaf people
learn to speak. -
1:50 - 1:54By 1870,
when Bell was 23, -
1:54 - 1:58both of his brothers had died
from a disease called tuberculosis. -
1:58 - 2:04Alexander was sick, too, and his parents
were very worried that he would also die. -
2:04 - 2:06They moved
to Canada. -
2:06 - 2:10They thought the air there
was healthier than the air in London. -
2:11 - 2:14During his time in Canada,
Bell got well again, -
2:14 - 2:19and in 1871, he moved
to Boston, Massachusetts. -
2:20 - 2:24He began spending less of his time
teaching and more time inventing. -
2:24 - 2:26He experimented
with a telegraph -
2:26 - 2:28that could send more
than one message at once -
2:28 - 2:30by using different
sound frequencies, -
2:30 - 2:32and while he was
working on that, -
2:32 - 2:35he started to believe
that he could invent a way -
2:35 - 2:39to send the human
voice over wires. -
2:40 - 2:46Bell did not have much success
with his invention until 1874, -
2:46 - 2:50when he met Thomas Watson,
an electrical designer and mechanic, -
2:50 - 2:52who helped him
with his work. -
2:52 - 2:59On March 10, 1876, Alexander
Graham Bell got his telephone to work. -
2:59 - 3:04He said, "Mr. Watson,
come here - I want to see you." -
3:04 - 3:06Thomas Watson,
who was in another room, -
3:06 - 3:12heard Bell's voice and came to see.
The telephone had worked! -
3:12 - 3:14Less than
six months later, -
3:14 - 3:19telephone demonstrations were
being given while curious people stood by, -
3:19 - 3:22amazed to hear voices
from people a few miles away -
3:22 - 3:24come out of
Bell's invention. -
3:24 - 3:30Soon, thousands and thousands
of people owned telephones. -
3:30 - 3:32After the success
of his invention, -
3:32 - 3:36Alexander Graham Bell
got married and had a family. -
3:36 - 3:39Although he is best known
for the invention of the telephone, -
3:39 - 3:42he invented many other
things throughout his life, -
3:42 - 3:44including
the metal detector, -
3:44 - 3:48a wireless telephone that
transmitted a signal with light, -
3:48 - 3:51a device to detect
icebergs, -
3:51 - 3:56an invention to detect problems
with someone's hearing, and more. -
3:57 - 4:02In 1915, Bell made the first
transcontinental phone call. -
4:02 - 4:06While he was in New York, he talked
to his old assistant Thomas Watson, -
4:06 - 4:09who was in San Francisco,
and they heard each other -
4:09 - 4:15much more clearly than they did
during the first phone call in 1876. -
4:15 - 4:20On August 2, 1922,
at the age of 75, -
4:20 - 4:26Alexander Graham Bell died
at his home in Nova Scotia, Canada. -
4:26 - 4:29When he died,
every phone in North America -
4:29 - 4:33was turned off
and silent in his honor. -
