The myth of Loki and the master builder - Alex Gendler
-
0:07 - 0:12Asgard, a realm of wonders, was where
the Norse Gods made their home. -
0:12 - 0:16There Odin’s great hall of Valhalla
towered above the mountains -
0:16 - 0:20and Bifrost, the rainbow bridge,
anchored itself. -
0:20 - 0:22But though their domain was magnificent,
-
0:22 - 0:27it stood undefended from the giants
and trolls of Jotunheim, -
0:27 - 0:30who despised the gods and
sought to destroy them. -
0:30 - 0:34One day when Thor, strongest of the
gods, was off fighting these foes, -
0:34 - 0:39a stranger appeared,
riding a powerful gray horse. -
0:39 - 0:42The visitor made the gods
an astonishing offer. -
0:42 - 0:45He would build them the greatest
wall they’d ever seen, -
0:45 - 0:50higher than any giant could climb
and stronger than any troll could break. -
0:50 - 0:55All he asked in return was the beautiful
goddess Freya’s hand in marriage— -
0:55 - 0:59along with the sun and moon from the sky.
-
0:59 - 1:03The gods balked at this request
and were ready to send him away. -
1:03 - 1:07But the trickster Loki
concocted a devious plan. -
1:07 - 1:10He told the gods they should
accept the stranger’s offer, -
1:10 - 1:16but set such strict conditions that he
would fail to complete the wall in time. -
1:16 - 1:21That way, they would lose nothing, while
getting most of the wall built for free. -
1:21 - 1:23Freya didn’t like this idea at all,
-
1:23 - 1:26but Odin and the other
gods were convinced -
1:26 - 1:28and came to an agreement
with the builder. -
1:28 - 1:31He would only have one winter
to complete the wall. -
1:31 - 1:34If any part was unfinished by
the first day of summer, -
1:34 - 1:36he would receive no payment.
-
1:36 - 1:40And he could have no help
from any other people. -
1:40 - 1:43The gods sealed the deal with solemn oaths
-
1:43 - 1:47and swore the mason would come
to no harm in Asgard. -
1:47 - 1:52In the morning, the stranger began to dig
the foundations at an astonishing speed, -
1:52 - 1:57and at nightfall he set off towards the
mountains to obtain the building stones. -
1:57 - 2:00But it was only the next morning,
when they saw him returning, -
2:00 - 2:02that the gods began to worry.
-
2:02 - 2:05As agreed, no other people
were helping the mason. -
2:05 - 2:10But his horse Svadilfari was hauling
a load of stones so massive -
2:10 - 2:13it left trenches in the ground
behind them. -
2:13 - 2:15Winter came and went.
-
2:15 - 2:19The stranger kept building,
Svadilfari kept hauling, -
2:19 - 2:22and neither snow nor rain could
slow their progress. -
2:22 - 2:27With only three days left until summer,
the wall stood high and impenetrable, -
2:27 - 2:30with only the gate left to be built.
-
2:30 - 2:33Horrified, the gods realized that not
only would they lose -
2:33 - 2:35their fertility goddess forever,
-
2:35 - 2:41but without the sun and moon the world
would be plunged into eternal darkness. -
2:41 - 2:44They wondered why they’d made
such a foolish wager— -
2:44 - 2:48and then remembered Loki
and his terrible advice. -
2:48 - 2:51Suddenly, Loki didn’t feel so clever.
-
2:51 - 2:55All of his fellow gods threatened him
with an unimaginably painful death -
2:55 - 3:00if he didn’t find some way to prevent
the builder from getting his payment. -
3:00 - 3:04So Loki promised to take care of the
situation, and dashed away. -
3:04 - 3:06Outside, night had fallen,
-
3:06 - 3:10and the builder prepared to set off
to retrieve the final load of stones. -
3:10 - 3:14But just as he called Svadilfari to him,
a mare appeared in the field. -
3:14 - 3:18She was so beautiful that
Svadilfari ignored his master -
3:18 - 3:20and broke free of his reins.
-
3:20 - 3:22The mason tried to catch him,
-
3:22 - 3:26but the mare ran deep into the
woods and Svadilfari followed. -
3:26 - 3:28The stranger was furious.
-
3:28 - 3:31He knew that the gods were behind
this and confronted them: -
3:31 - 3:33no longer as a mild-mannered mason,
-
3:33 - 3:38but in his true form as a terrifying
mountain giant. -
3:38 - 3:39This was a big mistake.
-
3:39 - 3:42Thor had just returned to Asgard,
-
3:42 - 3:45and now that the gods knew
a giant was in their midst, -
3:45 - 3:47they disregarded their oaths.
-
3:47 - 3:49The only payment the
builder would receive— -
3:49 - 3:51and the last thing he would ever see—
-
3:51 - 3:55was the swing of Thor’s
mighty hammer Mjolnir. -
3:55 - 4:00As they set the final stones into the
wall, the gods celebrated their victory. -
4:00 - 4:02Loki was not among them, however.
-
4:02 - 4:05Several months would pass
before he finally returned, -
4:05 - 4:09followed by a beautiful gray
foal with eight legs. -
4:09 - 4:13The foal would grow into a magnificent
steed named Sleipnir -
4:13 - 4:18and become Odin’s mount, a horse
that could outrun the wind itself. -
4:18 - 4:23But exactly where he had come from was
something Loki preferred not to discuss.
