Vaccines: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

  • Not Synced
Vaccines, or as your fun doctor at your
  • Not Synced
    family practice puts it,
  • Not Synced
    "SHOTS, SHOTS,
    SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS
  • Not Synced
    SHOTS, SHOTS,
    SHOTS SHOTS SHO--
  • Not Synced
seriously there'll be a slight pinch."
  • Not Synced
Now, vaccines are one of humanity's most
  • Not Synced
    incredible accomplishments, and they've
  • Not Synced
saved millions of lives, and there was
  • Not Synced
a time when a new one was
    cause for celebration.
  • Not Synced
"Dr. Jonas Salk discovers a vaccine that
  • Not Synced
promises to wipe out childhood's crippling
  • Not Synced
    and killing enemy, polio.
  • Not Synced
Anxious parents are thrilled and grateful,
  • Not Synced
responding to one of the greatest
  • Not Synced
    mass inoculations in medical annals."
  • Not Synced
It's true, people lined up for the
  • Not Synced
polio shot like it was an iPhone.
  • Not Synced
Although, for the record, polio was never
  • Not Synced
    'childhood's most crippling enemy' because
  • Not Synced
that was, and will forever remain,
  • Not Synced
    accidentally seeing your father's penis.
  • Not Synced
    [laughter]
  • Not Synced
But despite their success, small groups
  • Not Synced
are both skeptical and vocal about vaccines,
  • Not Synced
which is nothing, but these days their voice
  • Not Synced
has been amplified by the human megaphone
  • Not Synced
that is the President of the United States.
  • Not Synced
"I am totally in favor of vaccines,
  • Not Synced
but I want smaller doses over a longer
  • Not Synced
period of time. Because you take a baby in,
  • Not Synced
and I've see it, and I've seen it, and I had
  • Not Synced
my children taken care of over a long period
  • Not Synced
of time, over two or three year period of time,
  • Not Synced
same exact amount, but you take this little
  • Not Synced
beautiful baby, and you pump-- I mean
  • Not Synced
it looks just like it's meant for a horse,
  • Not Synced
    not for a child--" [laughter]
  • Not Synced
That is Donald Trump on the campaign trail
  • Not Synced
raising doubts about vaccinations, and that
  • Not Synced
is a sentiment that he has also expressed
  • Not Synced
    online with a Tweet reading,
  • Not Synced
    "Tiny children are not horses"
  • Not Synced
And that is an assertion that Politifact rates
  • Not Synced
    "Yeah, I mean, I guess technically we've
  • Not Synced
gotta give him that, but, good grief."
  • Not Synced
And look, look you know this.
  • Not Synced
It is not wise to take healthcare advice
  • Not Synced
from a man how has willingly sought care
  • Not Synced
from this doctor who looks like he sneaks into
  • Not Synced
a Senior Frog's in the middle of the night to
  • Not Synced
f--k the mozarella sticks. You know that.
  • Not Synced
But it is not just Trump who is skeptical.
  • Not Synced
And those concerns have driven some
  • Not Synced
    people to extremes.
  • Not Synced
For instance, back in 2011, some parents
  • Not Synced
made headlines by taking what they saw
  • Not Synced
as a more natural route to immunizing
  • Not Synced
    their children.
  • Not Synced
    "Catherine, we're talking about parents
  • Not Synced
who are taking used lollipops, saliva, and
  • Not Synced
    puss-soaked clothing from complete strangers,
  • Not Synced
    and deliberately infecting their children."
  • Not Synced
    [audience is grossed out]
  • Not Synced
Ok, ok, alright, so setting aside the
  • Not Synced
grossness of parents infecting their kids
  • Not Synced
with lollipops from strangers, that graphic
  • Not Synced
    has an unfortunate misspelling because
  • Not Synced
    swapping spit and passing "puss"
  • Not Synced
    [laughter]
  • Not Synced
sounds like the sex talk that Kid Rock
  • Not Synced
    would give his teenage son.
  • Not Synced
"Look bro, I know you're gonna wanna
  • Not Synced
swap some spit, pass some puss, but
  • Not Synced
if you don't throw a raincoat on that
  • Not Synced
devil dog, it's gonna be scorch-city
  • Not Synced
    for you, buckeroo.
  • Not Synced
This was quality time we just had some
    quality time."
  • Not Synced
And while it is important to remember that
  • Not Synced
the vast majority of parents are making sure
  • Not Synced
their children get vaccinated on time, the
  • Not Synced
voices of those who don't carry.
  • Not Synced
Any internet search about vaccines will
  • Not Synced
quickly lead you down a frightening rabbit hole.
  • Not Synced
And the background hum of doubt can make
  • Not Synced
    some parents understandably nervous.
  • Not Synced
"I'm concerned about how many vaccines
  • Not Synced
we have to give our children at once."
  • Not Synced
"So I'm kind of a debating whether...
  • Not Synced
...I will do them, but I'm debating the age.
  • Not Synced
When should I have them done."
  • Not Synced
"There's just so much information there, and
  • Not Synced
    I don't know who to ask. I don't know if there's
  • Not Synced
y'know, there's no such thing as an
  • Not Synced
    unbiased source."
  • Not Synced
"At least 10% of parents delay or skip
  • Not Synced
some shots. Around 1% don't vaccinate at all."
  • Not Synced
Right, and y'know, parents get so much
  • Not Synced
information, it is hard to know what to do.
  • Not Synced
Should you vaccinate? Should you eat the placenta?
  • Not Synced
Should you let kids cry? And the answer
  • Not Synced
to those by the way are, yes, no, and
  • Not Synced
absolutely, because the more they cry now,
  • Not Synced
the more they'll be prepared to watch
  • Not Synced
'This is Us' when they get older.
  • Not Synced
[gets choked up while audience laughs]
  • Not Synced
And this atmosphere of confusion about
  • Not Synced
    vaccines has caused real problems.
  • Not Synced
There are now 11 states where the number
  • Not Synced
of unvaccinated kids is on the rise.
  • Not Synced
And in small pockets all over America, the
  • Not Synced
    numbers can get startlingly high.
  • Not Synced
In the Somali community in Minnesota, the
  • Not Synced
measles vaccination rate for children dropped
  • Not Synced
to just 42%, and that had some
  • Not Synced
    very real consequences.
  • Not Synced
"Measles, once eradicated in the US, is now
  • Not Synced
    exploding in Minnesota's Somali community
  • Not Synced
    where many parents won't vaccinate.
  • Not Synced
The virus is so contagious that if you're
  • Not Synced
exposed to it and you don't have the
  • Not Synced
    vaccine, there's a 90% change you'll contract it.
  • Not Synced
They can have permanent brain damage.
  • Not Synced
They can have blindness or deafness.
  • Not Synced
And so we wouldn't vaccinate if this was just
  • Not Synced
a rashy illness. This is a very serious disease."
  • Not Synced
Exactly. And this is how bad it is:
  • Not Synced
In that community, the number of measles
  • Not Synced
cases so far this year, has already outpaced
  • Not Synced
the total number in all the US last year.
  • Not Synced
    And that is TERRIBLE.
  • Not Synced
Because the only thing Minnesota should
  • Not Synced
have more of than any other state is
  • Not Synced
    Garrison Kieller and people disappointed
  • Not Synced
    by the Mall of America.
  • Not Synced
"Oh, so it's just a bigger mall, and it has
  • Not Synced
    two Build-a-Bear workshops.
  • Not Synced
    That's amazing. [laughter]
  • Not Synced
This memory, it will last me a lifetime,
  • Not Synced
    as will these two bears,
  • Not Synced
    from two different Build-a-Bear workshops.
  • Not Synced
So tonight we are going to look at why
  • Not Synced
these fears persist and what the consequences
  • Not Synced
of succumbing to them can be.
  • Not Synced
Before we start, I kind of get why vaccines
  • Not Synced
can creep people out. Vaccination can mean
  • Not Synced
getting injected by a needle filled with
  • Not Synced
    science juice.
  • Not Synced
    Although every medical practice sounds
  • Not Synced
terrifying when you break it down like that.
  • Not Synced
    An appendectomy means removing one
  • Not Synced
    of your organs from stabbery.
  • Not Synced
Anibiotics are poisons used to murder
  • Not Synced
    things living in you.
  • Not Synced
    And even exercise means forcefully
  • Not Synced
    burning up your insides.
  • Not Synced
My point is the human body is a true
  • Not Synced
carnival of horrors, and frankly, I'm
  • Not Synced
    embarassed to have one.
  • Not Synced
    [laughter]
  • Not Synced
And much of the fear surrounding vaccines
  • Not Synced
stems from their supposed link to autism.
  • Not Synced
Now that is a theory that gained traction
  • Not Synced
in the late '90s thanks to a study published
  • Not Synced
in a medical journal The Lancet suggesting
  • Not Synced
a link between autism and the MMR vaccine.
  • Not Synced
The study was of just 12 children, and it was
  • Not Synced
    by this guy, Andrew Wakefield.
  • Not Synced
And if you're wondering why I didn't say
  • Not Synced
'doctor' Andrew Wakefield, this is why:
  • Not Synced
"Follow-up studies of hundreds of thousands
  • Not Synced
of children could not find any evidence
  • Not Synced
that the MMR vaccine causes autism.
  • Not Synced
    And investigations into Wakefield's original
  • Not Synced
paper revealed he distorted the data and
  • Not Synced
    acted unethically.
  • Not Synced
    He's lost his medical license.
  • Not Synced
The Lancet paper has been retracted."
  • Not Synced
It's true: Wakefield made a big splash
  • Not Synced
before having his legacy tarnished, and
  • Not Synced
his title revoked. He's basically the
  • Not Synced
    Lance Armstrong of doctors.
  • Not Synced
    But even though Wakefield's conclusions
  • Not Synced
have been debunked many times, he not only
  • Not Synced
denies wrong-doing, he actually still gives
  • Not Synced
talks about the supposed dangers of the
  • Not Synced
MMR vaccine. In fact, this is him in 2011
  • Not Synced
talking to the Somali community that we saw
  • Not Synced
earlier in Minnesota, and presumably ending
  • Not Synced
his speech with, "Trust me. I'm a
    used-to-be-a-doctor."
  • Not Synced
And to be fair, Wakefield is not the only
  • Not Synced
    voice raising alarms about vaccines.
  • Not Synced
He has company from across the political
  • Not Synced
spectrum, from Robert F. Kennedy on the left
  • Not Synced
to Alex Jones wherever the fuck he fits in,
  • Not Synced
    to even this guy:
  • Not Synced
"We can's make, um, you can't make people
  • Not Synced
do procedures they don't want. The parents
  • Not Synced
have to be the ones to make the decisions
  • Not Synced
for what's best for my-- for our kids.
  • Not Synced
It can't be the government saying that.
  • Not Synced
    It's against the Nuremberg Laws."
  • Not Synced
Yes. [laughter] That is Rob Schneider
  • Not Synced
performing an impromptu rendition of his
  • Not Synced
famous character, The Annoying Guy Who is Wrong.
  • Not Synced
    Because [laughter] despite his misunderstanding
  • Not Synced
of, among other things, what the Nuremberg
  • Not Synced
Laws are, and what constitutes acceptable
  • Not Synced
head wear for a grown man, Schneider has
  • Not Synced
spoken out against mandatory vaccines for
  • Not Synced
years, even once calling this California
  • Not Synced
State Assemblywoman to debate the issue,
  • Not Synced
prompting her to post on Facebook,
  • Not Synced
"...let's be honest, that is 20 minutes of
  • Not Synced
my life I'll never get back: arguing that
  • Not Synced
    vaccines don't cause autism with
  • Not Synced
    Deuce Bigalow; male gigolo."
  • Not Synced
    [laughter and applause]
And yeah, sure, it's funny, but y'know,
  • Not Synced
hold on lady, let's not sully the good name
  • Not Synced
of Deuce Bigalow just because of something
  • Not Synced
that his portrayer Rob Schneider said.
  • Not Synced
That's like implying William Wallace doesn't
  • Not Synced
trust Jews, or Officer Nordberg is a murderer.
  • Not Synced
So, y'know, try and separate the two.
  • Not Synced
Now, the good news is these days very
  • Not Synced
few people will say they are completely
  • Not Synced
    anti-vaccine. Instead, like the president,
  • Not Synced
    they'll say, "I'm not anti-vaccine, BUT..."
  • Not Synced
And it's what comes after that BUT that
  • Not Synced
we need to look at tonight.
  • Not Synced
One example is, "Hey, I'm not anti-vaccine,
  • Not Synced
but I am pro-safe vaccine." And that can often
  • Not Synced
    refer to concern over scary-sounding
  • Not Synced
    ingredients like thimerosal, a mercury-based
  • Not Synced
preservative. For years now, RFK Jr. has led
  • Not Synced
a crusade against it. In fact, just his
  • Not Synced
year, he gave a speech where he said this:
  • Not Synced
"For 33 years, I've been working to get
  • Not Synced
mercury out of fish. Nobody has ever called
  • Not Synced
me anti-fish. Because I want mercury out of
  • Not Synced
vaccines, I should not be called anti-vaccine."
  • Not Synced
Ok, well... for a start, why would anyone be
  • Not Synced
    ashamed to be called anti-fish?
  • Not Synced
Fish are stupid. And how do I know that?
  • Not Synced
Look at them! Just look at this idiot!
  • Not Synced
    And it's not just him.
  • Not Synced
Check this moron out as well.
