Solve division word problems 2

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    - [Instructor] We're told
    there are 18 students
  • 0:02 - 0:03
    in a school choir.
  • 0:03 - 0:06
They need to stand in 3 equal rows
  • 0:06 - 0:07
    for their performance.
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    How many students will
    there be in each row?
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    Pause this video and
    try to do this yourself
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    before we do this together.
  • 0:12 - 0:15
Alright, now let's do this together.
  • 0:15 - 0:16
What I'm gonna do is, first,
  • 0:16 - 0:18
I'm gonna set up the rows
  • 0:18 - 0:19
and then I'm gonna, one by one,
  • 0:19 - 0:21
put these 18 students into the rows
  • 0:21 - 0:23
and see how many end up in each row.
  • 0:23 - 0:26
    So let's call, let me
    make three lines here
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    for the three rows.
  • 0:27 - 0:31
    So there and there.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    So this is row one,
  • 0:34 - 0:38
this is row two, this is row three.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
And I'm just gonna use a
    circle to represent each
  • 0:40 - 0:42
of the students in the choir.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    So I'm gonna put the
    first student in row one,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
the second student in row two,
  • 0:47 - 0:49
the third student in row three.
  • 0:49 - 0:50
And so I'm just gonna keep doing that,
  • 0:50 - 0:52
doing one at a time into each row.
  • 0:52 - 0:53
    So one, two, three.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
I'm gonna count all the way to 18.
  • 0:55 - 1:00
Four, five, six, seven, eight, nine
  • 1:01 - 1:05
    10, 11, 12, 13,
  • 1:05 - 1:09
    14, 15, 16, 17, and 18.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
All right, it looks like I
    got the exact same number
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    of circles or students in
    each of these three rows.
  • 1:14 - 1:15
    How many are there?
  • 1:15 - 1:17
It looks like one, two, three,
  • 1:17 - 1:21
four, five, six in each of these rows.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
There's six here, six here, and six here.
  • 1:23 - 1:26
And that makes sense because if I add
  • 1:26 - 1:28
six plus six plus six, I get to 18.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
If I say six times three, that's 18.
  • 1:31 - 1:33
Or if I say I have 18 students
  • 1:33 - 1:37
    and I wanna divide them
    into three equal rows,
  • 1:37 - 1:41
that is going to be equal to six.
