Introducing the Firefox OS Simulator

  • 0:02 - 0:02
    Hi there, I'm Potch.
  • 0:02 - 0:06
I'm a web developer at Mozilla and I want to take a few minutes to talk to
  • 0:06 - 0:11
you about the new Firefox OS Simulator, tell you how to install it, and how to use it.
  • 0:11 - 0:16
The Firefox OS Simulator is an extension for Firefox that makes it easy for an App Developer to
  • 0:16 - 0:20
test out their app in Mozilla's upcoming Firefox OS mobile platform
  • 0:20 - 0:23
as they develop their app without needing a phone.
  • 0:24 - 0:27
You can find the extension on the Firefox Add-ons website at
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    addons.mozilla.org.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
We'll search for Firefox OS Simulator.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
Version 1 of the Simulator is a preview release but
  • 0:41 - 0:45
it's been reviewed by Add-ons staff so it's safe to install.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
It's a fairly large download because it contains a full copy
  • 0:51 - 0:55
of Firefox OS compiled to run on a PC instead of a phone.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
Once it's done downloading we just click install and there we go.
  • 1:07 - 1:10
To launch the simulator go to the menu bar and select
  • 1:10 - 1:16
Tools> Web Developer> Firefox OS Simulator.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
This is the simulator dashboard, the dashboard is the
  • 1:19 - 1:23
place where you manage your installed apps and launch the simulator itself.
  • 1:24 - 1:28
Before we install some apps let's launch the Simulator to see what it looks like.
  • 1:29 - 1:33
The Simulator launches as a separate desktop application.
  • 1:33 - 1:35
Here you can see the lock screen.
  • 1:35 - 1:38
We can swipe up from the bottom to unlock the phone.
  • 1:40 - 1:45
On the home screen you can scroll around to see a list of the pre-installed applications.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
At the bottom, the is a home button to simulate
  • 1:48 - 1:50
the home button on the device itself.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
Now that we've explored the simulator some, let's install an app.
  • 1:58 - 2:02
In my day job, I work on the Firefox Marketplace.
  • 2:02 - 2:03
    So let's test that.
  • 2:12 - 2:16
In the dashboard enter the URL of the app that you would like to test.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
It will auto-complete URLS from any open tabs you have.
  • 2:20 - 2:24
Once you click Add URL it will automatically launch running that app.
  • 2:26 - 2:29
Here we see the mobile version of the Marketplace.
  • 2:32 - 2:37
As you can see, the Simulator makes it easy to test out a web app in just a few clicks.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
Additionally, after you install an App,
  • 2:40 - 2:44
its icon will be placed on the home screen so you can launch it later.
  • 2:45 - 2:50
Even though this is just a preview, I hope you'll try it out and let us know what you think. Thanks!
