Why Sinead O’Connor Says She Ripped Up A Picture Of The Pope On Live TV

  • 0:00 - 0:03
When you tore the pope's picture up
  • 0:03 - 0:05
    on Saturday Night Live,
  • 0:05 - 0:08
whose picture were you tearing up?
  • 0:08 - 0:09
    The pope's.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
I mean what did the pope represent to you?
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    Interestingly, what people don't know
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    is that first of all,
  • 0:14 - 0:17
we had already knew 10 years before you all did
  • 0:17 - 0:19
about child abuse within the Catholic Church.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    We had evidence.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
The photo itself had been on my mother's bedroom wall
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    all my life.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
I was genuinely very angry with what the church were doing.
  • 0:28 - 0:29
    By ripping that picture,
  • 0:29 - 0:31
I risked my career and everything.
  • 0:31 - 0:32
I could be a billionaire now if I wanted,
  • 0:32 - 0:34
if I believed in that, you know what I mean?
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    But I don't.
  • 0:35 - 0:36
But I know what you're getting at,
  • 0:36 - 0:39
and yes, I didn't, this didn't occur to me
  • 0:39 - 0:42
until about six months ago, it's my father.
  • 0:42 - 0:44
Did you know you were gonna do it when you went on?
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    Mhmm.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
So I had planned it for a couple of weeks.
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    At the very end,
  • 0:48 - 0:50
I would pull out the picture of the pope and tear it up.
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    Silence.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    Do it at the camera.
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    Silence.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    Everywhere, it was fantastic.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    So what happened afterwards?
  • 0:58 - 1:00
My manager vanished for about three days.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
He went to his hotel, just unplugged the phone.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
About 10 years after that that I don't remember,
  • 1:04 - 1:07
because that's when it became acceptable
  • 1:07 - 1:09
and it became the norm that I was treated
  • 1:09 - 1:11
by everyone I knew from family to everyone,
  • 1:11 - 1:15
that like I was an absolutely insane, crazy person.
