What is it like being black in India? BBC News

  • 0:00 - 0:04
    (Traditional music playing)
  • 0:19 - 0:22
One of the stories BBC Pop Up
    was asked to do
  • 0:22 - 0:25
    was to tell the story
    of Africans living in India
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    and some of the tough
    experiences they have.
  • 0:28 - 0:31
We thought this would be a really
    interesting story
  • 0:31 - 0:32
and instead of just filming it,
    we went one better
  • 0:34 - 0:36
and the man who suggested it
is gonna help us to make it.
  • 0:37 - 0:38
    (music playing)
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    India is very exciting.
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    Every day I go out,
    I see something new.
  • 0:45 - 0:49
There are lots of Africans now in India
    doing their studies,
  • 0:49 - 0:52
and they're facing a lot of racism.
  • Not Synced
Recently, there have been a lot of news
    talking about Africans being attacked,
  • Not Synced
    molested, beaten up.
  • Not Synced
So when I hear the stories,
it makes me feel so bad about it.
  • Not Synced
    - How are you doing, guys?
    How are you?
  • Not Synced
    - What are your experiences with Indians?
  • Not Synced
    [S] - Indians? Actually, it's not
    that much.
  • Not Synced
    There's not good chemistry
    between Africans and Indians
  • Not Synced
because, normally, Indians don't trust us.
  • Not Synced
Some of them don't trust us.
  • Not Synced
    - Yeah, so it is very common in India.
  • Not Synced
    Indians think that black women
    are prostitutes.
  • Not Synced
So they ask you "how much? how much
do you want me to stay with him?"
  • Not Synced
They ask this kind of question.
  • Not Synced
    - We all have similar experiences
    because of the people
  • Not Synced
Not all, some are very good.
    Very, very, very open-minded.
  • Not Synced
    - Benjamin, some of the stories
    your friends told us
  • Not Synced
    was quite disturbing.
  • Not Synced
    That largely happens because
Indians don't know their own history
  • Not Synced
that Africans played such a big role
in India between 14th and 17th centuries.
  • Not Synced
Even today, a big African community lives
    in the state of Gujarat.
  • Not Synced
I think it would be really good for you
to come along and meet them.
  • Not Synced
    What do you think?
  • Not Synced
    - Yes. It would be great.
  • Not Synced
    - Okay, let's go and meet them then.
  • Not Synced
    - Yeah, let's go.
  • Not Synced
    (music playing)
  • Not Synced
    So after a long drive
    through the state of Gujarat
  • Not Synced
we're about to meet the Sidi community
near the town of Sasan Gir.
  • Not Synced
    - I'm so excited, you know.
  • Not Synced
    I'm really surprised to see
    some Africans here in India.
  • Not Synced
    This part of India really...
I really want to meet with them
  • Not Synced
    and interact with them more.
  • Not Synced
    - Hello, namaste.
    - Namaste.
  • Not Synced
    - How are you?
    - Fine.
  • Not Synced
    - That's great.
    - Yeah.
  • Not Synced
    (speaking in Gujarati)
  • Not Synced
    (music)
  • Not Synced
    (children laughing and singing)
  • Not Synced
I just feel like I'm in Africa.
  • Not Synced
Basically, as some are saying, if they go
beyond the vicinity of this city
  • Not Synced
and village, another part of India,
    they are all stopped
  • Not Synced
and frequently asked: "are you from the
    are you from Africa?
  • Not Synced
exactly the same kind of question
    you face in
  • Not Synced
    [B] - This kind of
  • Not Synced
but how do you tackle them?
  • Not Synced
    (speaking in Gujarati)
  • Not Synced
    - Do you ever have the feeling like
you want to go back to Africa?
  • Not Synced
    To resettle in Africa
  • Not Synced
or do you still want to be in India?
  • Not Synced
    (speaking in Gujarati)
  • Not Synced
    (traditional music playing)
  • Not Synced
When I came it was like
    I was emotionally charged.
  • Not Synced
I almost wanted to cry when I saw
all the black Africans coming out
  • Not Synced
    to greet me this afternoon.
  • Not Synced
Coming here today has really changed
    my perception of India.
  • Not Synced
It has created a bond, it has created
    a mindset in me now
  • Not Synced
that there are people who are ready
    to receive Africans
  • Not Synced
whenever they see Africans in India.
  • Not Synced
Seeing this society today has given me
hope that in the near future
  • Not Synced
India will be a less racist society,
  • Not Synced
because this community is a symbol
    that Africans are also Indians.
