Mikaela Shiffrin’s Olympic Dream Keeps Getting Bigger | NYT - Winter Olympics

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    [lively music]
  • 0:11 - 0:15
    [gentle music]
  • 0:22 - 0:26
"Since I was little girl, I was
    watching Bode Miller compete
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    and winning in every discipline."
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    [non-English]
  • 0:29 - 0:30
    Out of the gate.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    "That's what it means to
be the best in the world.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
Not just winning slaloms or one
event, but being able to win,
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    to really compete
    in every event."
  • 0:37 - 0:41
    [gentle music]
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    "You have slalom skiers that
    are specializing in slalom.
  • 0:50 - 0:54
And to be competitive with them,
you need a lot of training.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    Then GS, the same thing.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
There's a lot of GS specialists.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    And then downhill
    and super-G, that's
  • 1:00 - 1:04
a whole other set of girls
    that are obviously exceptional.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    Racing all five
    disciplines, there's
  • 1:07 - 1:10
    very few people that have
actually been able to do it."
  • 1:10 - 1:13
    [gentle music]
  • 1:59 - 2:04
"When I ski, I feel some kind of
    a rhythm with every course.
  • 2:04 - 2:08
    Slalom is much faster
    tempo between turns.
  • 2:08 - 2:12
So it's kind of like a
really upbeat sort of a song,
  • 2:12 - 2:13
    like today's hits, you know."
  • 2:13 - 2:17
    [upbeat music]
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    "And then oddly
    enough, downhill, it's
  • 2:22 - 2:26
    almost like some sort
    of classical symphony.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    So that's been an
    interesting transition."
  • 2:28 - 2:32
    [classical music]
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    [upbeat music]
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    [classical music]
  • 2:56 - 3:36
    [gentle music]
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    "When I was doing only
    giant slalom and slalom,
  • 3:38 - 3:42
    I barely had enough time
    for training as it was.
  • 3:42 - 3:45
    Now, adding two more events,
    I have basically twice
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    as much training
    that I need to do
  • 3:47 - 3:50
    and half the amount
of time to do it all."
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    [electronic music]
  • 4:00 - 4:01
    [non-English]
  • 4:01 - 4:04
    "Skiing down an icy mountain
    at 80 miles an hour.
  • 4:04 - 4:07
    If you catch an edge,
    before you even can blink,
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    you're in the fences,
on the side of the hill.
  • 4:09 - 4:12
    And normally crashing that fast,
    you're going to get injured".
  • 4:12 - 4:14
    "130 kilometers an hour."
  • 4:14 - 4:18
    [electronic music]
  • 4:42 - 4:46
    [gentle music]
  • 4:50 - 4:53
"My biggest dream in ski racing
when I was five years old
  • 4:53 - 4:55
    was that I wanted to
    win the overall title.
  • 4:55 - 4:59
So it's just me staying true
to my dream as a little girl."
