    Okay here we go. Let's look

    at the market for santa hats.

    The demand basically shows a
    number of people
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    who are willing to buy hats at
    different prices.
  • 0:22 - 0:23
    If the price is high
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    then less people want to buy hats,
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    and if the price is low
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    then more people want to buy them.
  • 0:27 - 0:28
    The supply shows the
  • 0:28 - 0:29
    number of producers
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    that are willing to make hats.
  • 0:31 - 0:32
    If the price is low,
  • 0:32 - 0:33
    then very few producers want
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    to make them. If the price is high,

    then more producers want to

    make more hats.

    Supply and demand come together

    and set the equilibrium price
    and quantity,

    let's say five dollars and 4,000 hats.

    [Clifford] Now the demand curve

    shows that someone out there is

    willing to pay eight dollars. They didn't,

    they paid five dollars.

    That's called consumer surplus.

    It's the difference between

    what you're willing to pay
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    for something and what you actually

    do pay. The area of combined

    consumer surplus is this
    triangle right here,

    but what about the person who's

    willing to pay only four dollars?

    Well, they don't get it, they
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    don't value hats enough.

    Now, the supply curve shows

    that there is a producer with a super
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    low opportunity cost that's
    willing to sell

    hats for two dollars. But every
    producer that's

    going to sell hats for less
    than five dollars

    makes producer surplus.
    It's the difference

    between the price and what a seller is

    going to sell something for.

    But what about the producers

    that are willing to sell hats

    Now take a step back and look

    what's happening. Markets are

    extremely efficient at allocating

    or distributing resources.

    The people who want Santa Claus hats

    the most get it and they're
  • Not Synced
    made by producers with the lowest possible
  • Not Synced
    costs, that's awesome.

    But what happens when a market's
  • Not Synced
    not at equilibrium? Well, let's
  • Not Synced
    say the government establishes the
  • Not Synced
    price ceiling at three dollars. At
  • Not Synced
    that low price consumers want to buy
  • Not Synced
    6,000 units but the producer is
  • Not Synced
    only going to produce 2,000 units.
  • Not Synced
    That's called a shortage, and the resut
  • Not Synced
    is deadweight loss. Now the question is,
  • Not Synced
    do you see it? Pause the video,
    see if you can
  • Not Synced
    figure out where's producer surplus,
  • Not Synced
    consumer surplus, and this new thing
  • Not Synced
    called deadweight loss.

    the producer surplus gets lower,
  • Not Synced
    it's right here. All producers that are
  • Not Synced
    willing to sell above three dollars
  • Not Synced
    are now out of the market since now
  • Not Synced
    there's less output. The consumer
  • Not Synced
    surplus is right here, it's the difference
  • Not Synced
    between what consumers are willing
  • Not Synced
    to pay and what they actually did pay,
  • Not Synced
    three dollars. That means the deadweight
  • Not Synced
    loss is right here. It represents the loss
  • Not Synced
    efficiency that occurs when the market
  • Not Synced
    doesn't reach equilibrium. We're not
  • Not Synced
    making the amount that society actually
  • Not Synced
    wants. When you compare the two markets,
  • Not Synced
    one at equilibrium and the one with the
  • Not Synced
    price ceiling, you can tell that
    it's inefficient.

    There's some consumer surplus and
  • Not Synced
    producer surplus that's missing, and
  • Not Synced
    so consumers and producers can benefit
  • Not Synced
    if we produce more output. Does it make

    sense? Okay, let's do it again this time,

    except let's see what happens when
  • Not Synced
    there's a price floor. Now, the government
  • Not Synced
    says the price can't go lower than
  • Not Synced
    seven, and the result is a surplus.

    Producers want to make 6,000 units,
  • Not Synced
    but consumers are only willing
    to buy 2,000 units.
  • Not Synced
    The question is, where's consumer surplus,
  • Not Synced
    producer surplus, and deadweight loss?

    if we produce too little output,

    we're going to end up with
    deadweight loss.

    it comes up all the time when you see

    taxes and tariffs, monopolies, and both

    positive and negative externalities.

    In every case there's something

    preventing the market from achieving
  • Not Synced
    the most efficient outcome altogether.

    Deadweight loss is one of the
    most important

    concepts in microeconomics.

    supply and demand graph to show that

    Christmas shopping actually causes

    deadweight loss. Markets
    adjust to consumer
  • Not Synced
    demand. So when you buy things
  • Not Synced
    for yourself, then markets are generally
  • Not Synced
    efficient, there's no deadweight loss.
  • Not Synced
    But when your Aunt Clara gives you
  • Not Synced
    a gift that you don't really want
  • Not Synced
    or that she paid a whole lot more for
  • Not Synced
    than you would, that causes
    deadweight loss.

    The demand curve shifts to the right
  • Not Synced
    and so the quantity that society
  • Not Synced
    actually wants is here, but the quantity
  • Not Synced
    actually produced is right here. The
  • Not Synced
    result is deadweight loss. The graph
  • Not Synced
    shows that the cost for each one of
  • Not Synced
    these units are higher than the benefit
  • Not Synced
    society has for them. These units
  • Not Synced
    should have never been produced.
