YouTube Rewind every year?

- Not really.

It's just a mashup of everything
you wanted to forget about.

- I usually end up watching it,
but not actively seeking it.

- Yeah, I usually do.

- Yes, because YouTube pushes them
to the front page every time.

- I've been watching YouTube Rewind
since probably 2013, 2012.

I knew less people than
I thought I normally would.

- Each year, it just gets
bigger and better.
-
I'm noticing that each year,
-
I actually start to notice less people.
-
Like, I know less people
in the YouTube Rewind,
-
even though I watch more YouTube.
-
- This year, I wouldn't say
it's lacking, because it was great.
-
But I think it was also because
there was a lot of people
-
that were from TV
and movies that were in it.
-
I wouldn't say they messed it up,
but it was just kinda like,
-
"Whoa, what are they doing in here?"
-
- I kind of hated all of the trends,
but I still liked them.
-
That's part of 2016,
is they try to incorporate
-
all of the meminess
that YouTube has become.
-
- (FBE) So who do you think YouTube-wise
-
was missing in the Rewind this year?
- I mean, I don't even--

I don't think that I'm too educated
on the whole YouTube culture.

- One of my favorite YouTubers,
Philip DeFranco,

I know he's not in it.
-
- They didn't have Ben J. Pierce.
-
They didn't have Troye Sivan.
-
They can't have everyone, I understand.
-
But some big people were missing.
-
- I didn't see Tyler Oakley,
and I know he's been in it FOREVER.
-
They're missing YouTubers,
-
but they're incorporating more YouTubers.
-
- No one can compare to
the drama channels and the roast channels
-
or whatever you want to call 'em.

RiceGum.

What, 5 million in a year?

And you're gonna put him
in YouTube Rewind? Like, that's crazy.

- (FBE) There's a lot of love
but also some hate with Rewind

around not liking the video
or not seeing a favorite YouTuber.
-
From a fan perspective,
-
why do you think people
get so vocal about Rewind?
-
- Well, I think it's like,
-
if you watch YouTube Rewind,
-
you watch it to see
your favorite YouTubers.
-
So if your favorite
YouTuber's not in there,
-
it's like, "Why did I even watch this?"
-
- I totally get why the fans
are probably angry
-
when their favorite people
are not in there,
-
because hey, I've been watching them
since they started YouTube.
-
Like, they're a huge part of YouTube.
Put them in there.
-
- They're trying to tell
who's the biggest of YouTube.
-
If you like someone's work
and you really appreciate it,
-
you're gonna get mad
that they're not incorporated
-
or a part of this huge thing
-
that is supposed to encompass everyone.
-
But the reality is, there was
probably 200 people at least
-
in that video, and they
can't get to everyone.
-
- YouTube has gotten
so mainstream popular.
-
When this first started out,
it was still kinda weird and quirky.
-
And it's like, "Wow, all of these people
-
vlogging from their bedrooms
are in space. That's so awesome."
-
And now it's just like,
-
"Wow, all of these celebrities
are dancing. That's less awesome."
-
- People need to get over it.
That's ridiculous.
-
You can't hate because
someone wasn't in a video.
-
Like, I could see why
you're upset to a certain extent.
-
But after that, it's like,
-
you don't got to give
YouTube crap for that.
-
- (FBE) So speaking more of 2016...
- Do we have to?

- (FBE) ...out of all the videos

that you filmed with FBE in 2016,

what is your favorite episode
that you were in?

- Let's see. I have to say
the R.I.P. Headphones,

only because it was my first video.

- The Brookhaven Experiment
was really, really fun,

just 'cause we got to use the V.R.
-
- There was a V.R. where I did
a 7-Eleven store clerk simulation,
-
and that was really fun.
-
- Five Nights at Freddy's:
Sister Location. That was a fun one.

- Well, I haven't seen it yet,
-
'cause it actually
doesn't air until Sunday.

But Just Dance 2017.
-
- Superhot. Like, the video game
that I was actually good at.
-
That actually made my week,
being good at a game.
-
- Eating a scorpion. I really
didn't think I would do it.
-
Like, if anybody actually knows me,
-
they know that I'm terrified
of any bug in general.

- The Carolina Reaper! Oh, of course!
-
I was in pain for, like, hours
after that. That was horrible.

- Reacting to Liza Koshy.
-
She reacted to us!
-
It was amazing, and she said
I had great eyebrows.

- (FBE) So finally, YouTube
has had a lot of controversies
-
this year, and especially recently,
with a lot of channels
-
speaking out about issues
that they have with YouTube.
-
- Yep. YouTube's broken.
-
- (FBE) So can you share how you feel
-
when you see some of your favorite
YouTubers having these issues
-
and how it makes you view YouTube?
-
- I don't know. I guess I don't
put much thought into it.
-
For me personally,
I just don't really care.
-
- I feel like they're turning
into an evil, greedy corporation.
-
- Now it's just clickbait videos.
-
And a lot of people
are losing their demographics,
-
their audience, and
I would say their money,
-
because that's like their job.
-
- I recognize, "Hey,
my homepage IS different."
-
Like, I don't see what I usually see.
-
YouTubers put their videos
out for a reason.
-
And when they're not
being reached to their fans,
-
that's upsetting.
-
- Sometimes people
are doing it just to get views,
-
because that's what's popular right now.
-
But at other times,
-
bringing it to the attention
of the fans is very important.
-
- If all of the top YouTubers
started a new platform,
-
I would go. And I think
that would be huge,
-
to go from just, like, people that started
-
filming themselves talking to people
-
with their own production company
-
to people that start their own platform.
-
That's such a cool evolution.
