Understanding the Dimensions of Sustainable Development

  • 0:01 - 0:04
    Understanding the dimensions
    of sustainable development
  • 0:06 - 0:10
    By endorsing Agenda 2030
    and its seventeen goals.
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    the world community has reaffirmed
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    its commitment to sustainable development
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    to ensure sustained and inclusive
    economic growth,
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    social inclusion
    and environmental protection,
  • 0:21 - 0:24
and to do so in partnership and peace.
  • 0:25 - 0:29
    Agenda 2030 is universal, transformative
    and rights-based.
  • 0:30 - 0:33
It's an ambitious plan of action
    for countries, the UN system
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    and all other development actors.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    The Agenda inspires us
    to think creatively
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    about the sustainability challenges
    of today
  • 0:40 - 0:44
so we can develop the right partnerships
    and take the right actions.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
At the heart of the Agenda
    are five critical components:
  • 0:48 - 0:52
    people, prosperity, peace,
    partnership, planet.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
These, in turn, underpin the seventeen
    sustainable development goals
  • 0:57 - 0:59
and are applicable in all countries.
  • 1:00 - 1:05
    Agenda 2030 and the SDGs
are not simply items on a checklist.
  • 1:05 - 1:09
    They represent a holistic approach
    to understanding and tackling problems
  • 1:09 - 1:13
by guiding us to ask the right questions
    at the right time.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
To achieve this, we need to consider
    several challenges
  • 1:17 - 1:19
in order to work out how they connect with
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    and impact upon each other.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    Finding these interdependences
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    helps us to address
    the root causes of problems
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    and to create long-term solutions.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    So, how does this work?
  • 1:31 - 1:35
    Sustainable development is usually viewed
through a lense of three core elements:
  • 1:35 - 1:39
    economic growth, social inclusion,
    and environmental protection.
  • 1:39 - 1:43
But it's important to remember that these
are not just categories or boxes.
  • 1:43 - 1:46
    They are connected
    and have aspects in common.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    For example, a health challenge,
    like tuberculosis
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    is not only determined
    by an unhealthy lifestyle,
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    it could also be influenced
    by other factors,
  • 1:54 - 1:56
such as poverty or air quality.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
To develop this approach a step further,
  • 2:00 - 2:03
two critical dimensions that will drive
    Agenda 2030
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    were adopted by member states:
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    partnership and peace.
  • 2:07 - 2:11
    Partnerships strengthen the capacities
of all stakeholders to work together.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    Peace, justice and strong institutions
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    are essential for improvements
    in the three core areas.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
Genuine sustainability sits at the center,
  • 2:20 - 2:23
and it would be important to consider
    each of the SDGs
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    through the lense
    of these five dimensions.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    Of course, we can't consider
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    every possible angle
    of a single challenge.
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    That's why it's crucial
    to build partnerships
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    to share knowledge and expertiece
  • 2:35 - 2:37
to learn how we can jointly
    address challenges.
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    This requires new ways
    of working together
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    focused on co-creation.
