of the Sermon on the Mount it is

  • 12:37 - 12:40
to Gentiles, but he wanted the Gentiles
  • 12:40 - 12:43
to see the law in a way that was
  • 12:43 - 12:44
    more applicable to them.
  • 12:44 - 12:46
So he did not include many of the things
  • 12:46 - 12:47
    that Matthew was about.
  • 12:47 - 12:49
(Stephanie) So, would you say that
  • 12:49 - 12:52
in Matthew some of the very detailed
  • 12:52 - 13:00
    renditions that Matthew shares
    connects with the Jews?
  • 13:00 - 13:00
    (Olric) Yes.
  • 13:00 - 13:02
(Stephanie) ...in a way that is powerful?
  • 13:02 - 13:03
    (Olric) Yes, indeed.
  • 13:03 - 13:05
    (Stephanie) All right.
  • 13:05 - 13:07
Let's go ahead and jump into
    Matthew, chapter 5,
  • 13:07 - 13:11
    and we'll read verses 17 through 19.
  • 13:11 - 13:14
And, Joshua, if you would be willing
  • 13:14 - 13:17
to read for us those first three verses
  • 13:17 - 13:21
    in Matthew, chapter 5,
    verses 17 through 19.
  • 13:21 - 13:23
(Joshua) Absolutely, and I'll be reading
  • 13:23 - 13:27
    from the New King James
    Version; the Bible says:
  • 13:57 - 14:00
    (Stephanie) So, what are we
    talking about here?
  • 14:00 - 14:02
We're talking about the Law of God, right?
  • 14:02 - 14:03
    (Joshua) Yes.
  • 14:03 - 14:05
    (Stephanie) This is the introduction
  • 14:05 - 14:08
to the Law of God that Matthew
    is talking about.
  • 14:08 - 14:10
Let's go and look at a few more verses,
  • 14:10 - 14:13
and then we'll consider some questions
  • 14:13 - 14:15
as they relate to the verses that we read.
  • 14:15 - 14:19
    In Matthew, chapter 5:21-22.
  • 14:19 - 14:21
Olric, would you read that for us,
  • 14:21 - 14:26
    Matthew, chapter 5, verses 21 and 22.
  • 14:26 - 14:31
And then we'll read verses 27 and 28.
  • 14:31 - 14:35
    (Olric) Reading from the New
    Living Translation:
  • 15:06 - 15:09
    (Stephanie) Wow, that's pretty strong.
  • 15:09 - 15:12
Yes, go ahead and continue on.
  • 15:27 - 15:29
(Stephanie) So, do you see a pattern?
  • 15:29 - 15:32
What is the pattern that you see
    in these verses?
  • 15:32 - 15:33
    Go ahead, Tricia Lee.
  • 15:33 - 15:36
(Tricia Lee) Well, first if we
    were wondering, "Well, what law
  • 15:36 - 15:39
is he talking about," it's clear
    as we kept reading
  • 15:39 - 15:41
    that he's talking about the
    Ten Commandments
  • 15:41 - 15:43
that the people at the time
    believed, prided themselves
  • 15:43 - 15:46
    in being able to keep,
    and you start to understand
  • 15:46 - 15:48
more about what Jesus meant when He said,
  • 15:48 - 15:50
"I've come to fulfill," to give
    a clearer understanding
  • 15:50 - 15:52
of what it truly means to keep the Law.
  • 15:52 - 15:56
And at the time, they were more concerned
about the outward physicality of behaviors
  • 15:56 - 15:59
    that proved that they
    were observing the laws,
  • 15:59 - 16:02
but here Jesus starts to point
to what's happening in our hearts,
  • 16:02 - 16:05
in our minds, in our thoughts,
    and kind of showing that
  • 16:05 - 16:08
breaking the Law or even sin
doesn't just occur in an action,
  • 16:08 - 16:10
it kind of starts in our hearts
    and our minds.
  • 16:10 - 16:13
So, again, in fulfilling that Law,
He's really kind of peeling back
  • 16:13 - 16:16
what they thought was the reality
in showing that it's much deeper
  • 16:16 - 16:18
than they thought in just a behavior.
  • 16:18 - 16:21
    There's something that's happening
in the heart that only He can come
  • 16:21 - 16:23
    and help them fix or
    help them actually be.
  • 16:23 - 16:26
    (Stephanie) Did you have a
    comment, Jason; go ahead.
  • 16:26 - 16:28
(Jason) Yes, I'm looking at this here,
  • 16:28 - 16:30
and it talks about how He didn't come
  • 16:30 - 16:31
    to destroy but to fulfill,
  • 16:31 - 16:32
    because Jesus could be accused
  • 16:32 - 16:35
    of these new teachings
    as destroying the law,
  • 16:35 - 16:36
    but what He's saying is,
  • 16:36 - 16:38
    "Look, I'm not destroying the Law;
  • 16:38 - 16:40
I'm showing you what it really means."
  • 16:40 - 16:42
    So, He's not saying what
    was said of old is untrue;
  • 16:42 - 16:45
He's saying what was said of old,
it is true, but also this.
  • 16:45 - 16:47
So, you have a very limited picture
  • 16:47 - 16:48
of what the Law is, but this is
  • 16:48 - 16:50
    a greater understanding,
    a greater fulfillment
  • 16:50 - 16:52
of what the Law truly is.
  • 16:52 - 16:55
And that is what He is doing
    here in the sermon.
  • 16:55 - 16:57
    (Stephanie) He's expounding on that.
    Yes, Missy.
  • 16:57 - 16:59
(Missy) From the fall of humanity,
  • 16:59 - 17:01
you know, they had perfection in Eden.
  • 17:01 - 17:04
    Then came the fall.
    They fell so far.
  • 17:04 - 17:06
    Humanity just, fell, fell, fell,
  • 17:06 - 17:08
and so, step by step, through Scripture
  • 17:08 - 17:11
you see how God is taking them
  • 17:11 - 17:13
step by step back to His ideal
  • 17:13 - 17:15
until you could see the fulfillment
  • 17:15 - 17:18
of the Law in Christ when
    He came to humanity.
  • 17:18 - 17:20
And it was supposed to be a revelation
  • 17:20 - 17:22
    of who God really was.
  • 17:22 - 17:23
    You know, opening our minds
  • 17:23 - 17:26
to what the Law really meant.
  • 17:26 - 17:27
    (Stephanie) Yes. Nathan.
  • 17:27 - 17:30
(Nathan) Keep in mind that Matthew
    is writing to Jews...
  • 17:30 - 17:31
    (Stephanie) Yes.
  • 17:31 - 17:34
    (Nathan) ...and Moses was
the great hero as the lawgiver.
  • 17:34 - 17:36
Moses went up on Mount Sinai
  • 17:36 - 17:38
to receive the Law from God,
  • 17:38 - 17:40
and then he gave it to the people,
  • 17:40 - 17:42
    and the people did their
    best to keep the law,
  • 17:42 - 17:43
    but Moses was the one
  • 17:43 - 17:46
who lead them out of slavery
and into the Promised Land, right?
  • 17:46 - 17:47
    So, the "deliverer."
  • 17:47 - 17:48
    (Stephanie) Right.
  • 17:48 - 17:50
    (Nathan) Now Matthew is showing
  • 17:50 - 17:52
Jesus is the One who went
    up on the mountain
  • 17:52 - 17:55
and now expounds upon the Law.
  • 17:55 - 17:58
He's the new Moses, showing them,
    "Okay, you received the Law
  • 17:58 - 18:00
    on the mountain from God
    through Moses."
  • 18:00 - 18:02
    Now up on this mountain
  • 18:02 - 18:04
Jesus is saying, "Let me show you what
  • 18:04 - 18:05
this Law really means and how
  • 18:05 - 18:07
    it applies deeply inwardly,
  • 18:07 - 18:09
and then you're going to be free,
  • 18:09 - 18:12
    not just from Egypt
but from the slavery of sin..."
  • 18:12 - 18:13
    (Team) Wow.
  • 18:13 - 18:15
(Nathan) "...when we get to the depths
  • 18:15 - 18:17
of what the Law means deep in the heart."
  • 18:17 - 18:19
(Stephanie) I want to go to
    another passage before we leave
  • 18:19 - 18:24
    the teaching of Jesus
    about the Law of God.
  • 18:24 - 18:28
    We'll move to Matthew 5:43-48,
  • 18:28 - 18:32
and, Kyle, would you be willing
    to read that for us?
  • 18:32 - 18:35
    Matthew 5:43-48.
  • 18:35 - 18:38
    (Kyle) I'll be reading from
    the New King James Version.
  • 18:38 - 18:40
    The Bible says:
  • 19:35 - 19:37
    (Stephanie) Wow.
  • 19:37 - 19:38
There's a lot in that verse.
  • 19:38 - 19:41
What do you pull out from those verses?
  • 19:41 - 19:42
    Go ahead, Joshua.
  • 19:42 - 19:44
(Joshua) I will say that it's this aspect
  • 19:44 - 19:46
of Christianity that's the most difficult.
  • 19:46 - 19:50
You know, if you compare this
    sort of command from Jesus
  • 19:50 - 19:52
    to the Ten Commandments,
  • 19:52 - 19:54
    the Ten Commandments
    actually look pretty easy.
  • 19:54 - 19:56
You know, if you tell me I'm supposed
  • 19:56 - 19:58
to love my enemies, do good to those
  • 19:58 - 20:00
    who are persecuting me,
  • 20:00 - 20:02
    it's like, "Are you serious?"
  • 20:02 - 20:04
But at the same time we have to think
  • 20:04 - 20:06
    about the fact that people
  • 20:06 - 20:08
    outside of Christianity judge us
  • 20:08 - 20:10
based on this sort of thing,
  • 20:10 - 20:13
not simply how many times do you
  • 20:13 - 20:15
go to church in a week or how many
  • 20:15 - 20:16
    Bible verses do you know,
  • 20:16 - 20:18
but it's in our character and in the way
  • 20:18 - 20:19
    that we treat others.
  • 20:19 - 20:21
    (Stephanie) Wow.
    Go ahead, Juliana.
  • 20:21 - 20:23
(Juliana) Actually this summer I was
  • 20:23 - 20:25
traveling around in Europe and happened
  • 20:25 - 20:28
to interact with an individual on a train.
  • 20:28 - 20:31
And somehow we got to talking
    about this kind of stuff,
  • 20:31 - 20:34
and he told me, "You know,
  • 20:34 - 20:37
    Christianity is supposed to be
so much more radical than it is.
  • 20:37 - 20:38
So many people, they focus just
  • 20:38 - 20:40
    on the Ten Commandments,
  • 20:40 - 20:42
but what about the Sermon on the Mount?"
  • 20:42 - 20:45
It kind of goes along with what
    you are saying, like, people
  • 20:45 - 20:48
    from the outside are looking
at us, and, it's like, wow!
  • 20:48 - 20:50
    This is what Christianity
    is supposed to be.
  • 20:50 - 20:53
And I think that he was completely right,
  • 20:53 - 20:55
that we should be looking a lot more
  • 20:55 - 20:57
at the Sermon on the Mount for many
  • 20:57 - 20:59
of the things of how we should
  • 20:59 - 21:00
    interact with other people.
  • 21:00 - 21:02
    (Stephanie) So isn't it interesting.
  • 21:02 - 21:05
I think Jesus was trying to move us
  • 21:05 - 21:07
away from just a head knowledge
  • 21:07 - 21:09
    to a heart knowledge, right?
  • 21:09 - 21:10
    (Team) Yes.
  • 21:10 - 21:11
    (Stephanie) A heart experience.
  • 21:11 - 21:14
(Derek) You know, I think, Stephanie,
    something Jason said earlier
  • 21:14 - 21:17
    is really important because
    some Christians get confused
  • 21:17 - 21:20
    and say the Ten Commandments
doesn't matter; we just need to love,
  • 21:20 - 21:21
    but that's absurd.
  • 21:21 - 21:25
That's like saying, "Don't hate people,
    but you can kill them."
  • 21:25 - 21:30
"Don't lust after someone, but you
can commit adultery with him or her."
  • 21:30 - 21:31
    It's not that.
  • 21:31 - 21:34
    The Commandments stands,
  • 21:34 - 21:37
but, as Tricia Lee was pointing out,
  • 21:37 - 21:40
God is calling us to a much
    higher standard.
  • 21:40 - 21:43
In fact, to be honest, it's
    an impossible standard
  • 21:43 - 21:45
if we're going to do it
  • 21:45 - 21:47
in our own strength because we know
  • 21:47 - 21:48
    how feeble we are.
  • 21:48 - 21:49
    (Team) Yes.
  • 21:49 - 21:51
(Derek) It's going to take a miracle...
  • 21:51 - 21:52
    (Stephanie) Exactly.
  • 21:52 - 21:54
(Derek) ...so that, as Joshua pointed out,
  • 21:54 - 21:57
people will look, and they'll actually see
  • 21:57 - 22:00
    Jesus reflected, right?
  • 22:00 - 22:02
    Instead of us.
  • 22:02 - 22:05
(Stephanie) And that happens as a result
  • 22:05 - 22:07
    of the head knowledge going
    to our hearts, right?
  • 22:07 - 22:10
And that's the next section that we
  • 22:10 - 22:16
want to move into, this outward conformity
  • 22:16 - 22:19
    versus an inward conversion.
  • 22:19 - 22:24
And, I'd like us to move
to Matthew, chapter 5, verse 20.
  • 22:24 - 22:28
Go back to Matthew, chapter 5, verse 20,
  • 22:28 - 22:30
and, Missy, would you read that for us?
  • 22:30 - 22:34
    (Missy) I am reading from
    the New Living Translation:
  • 22:46 - 22:48
    (Stephanie) So, I think
    this is coming back
  • 22:48 - 22:50
    to what Juliana was saying.
  • 22:50 - 22:53
    People expect something more
  • 22:53 - 22:57
than just a check off, right?
  • 22:57 - 22:59
    They want something real.
  • 22:59 - 23:05
(Olric) But it's not just the realness.
  • 23:05 - 23:06
    Notice here he says,
  • 23:06 - 23:08
    "Unless your righteousness
  • 23:08 - 23:12
    exceeds their righteousness, what was
  • 23:12 - 23:15
    their righteousness that was
    not sufficient for God?
  • 23:15 - 23:16
    Their righteousness...mind you,
  • 23:16 - 23:18
    righteousness means "right doing."
  • 23:18 - 23:22
So, they had the outward expression
  • 23:22 - 23:25
of doing right, but at the same time
  • 23:25 - 23:28
the inward conversion was not there.
  • 23:28 - 23:31
What they were doing was not from a heart
  • 23:31 - 23:35
that genuinely loved God and loved people.
  • 23:35 - 23:38
So you find that a lot
    of what was being done
  • 23:38 - 23:41
looked right to the folks on the outside,
  • 23:41 - 23:44
but God knew that the heart
    was not transformed.
  • 23:44 - 23:46
So, Jesus is saying,"It's not just
  • 23:46 - 23:49
to do right on the outside; I want
  • 23:49 - 23:52
    your heart to be in
    the right condition also."
  • 23:52 - 23:55
    That means that your actions
  • 23:55 - 23:57
    will be inspired and motivated
  • 23:57 - 24:00
    by the right desires.
  • 24:00 - 24:02
(Stephanie) So, it starts in the heart,
  • 24:02 - 24:06
it starts in the mind, and then
    our actions follow.
  • 24:06 - 24:07
    Go ahead.
  • 24:07 - 24:09
(Kyle) I'm just going to add
    onto what he said
  • 24:09 - 24:11
because the Pharisees, they had a scale.
  • 24:11 - 24:14
They said, "Okay, this is a sin and
this is worse and worse and worse,
  • 24:14 - 24:16
and this is a good deed,
  • 24:16 - 24:19
    and this one's really good,
and this one's really, really good."
  • 24:19 - 24:22
And they almost would balance and
say, "If your good deeds outweighed
  • 24:22 - 24:25
your bad deeds, then you earned
    righteousness in God's sight."
  • 24:25 - 24:28
So, it was this whole outward way
    of building up themselves, basically,
  • 24:28 - 24:31
to feel like they were good
    and accepted by God.
  • 24:31 - 24:33
But Jesus comes, and He says,
    "That's not what it's about.
  • 24:33 - 24:36
    Every amount of human
    righteousness is inadequate."
  • 24:36 - 24:39
    The only thing is the
    true heart righteousness
  • 24:39 - 24:41
that you were talking about, Pastor Derek.
  • 24:41 - 24:43
That is only from the Holy Spirit.
  • 24:43 - 24:44
    And that's a total transformation
  • 24:44 - 24:46
    of character; true perfection
    in God's eyes.
  • 24:46 - 24:49
    (Stephanie) By the way,...
  • 24:49 - 24:50
we look at it, and we say,
  • 24:50 - 24:53
"Oh, it has to exceed the
    righteousness of the Pharisees."
  • 24:53 - 24:55
Well, we know what the righteousness
  • 24:55 - 24:56
    of the Pharisees looked like,
  • 24:56 - 24:58
but for those who were listening,
  • 24:58 - 25:01
the Pharisees were on a high level.
  • 25:01 - 25:02
    (Team) Right.
  • 25:02 - 25:04
(Stephanie) So, for them, they were
  • 25:04 - 25:07
    thinking, "Whoa!
For us to exceed that --
  • 25:07 - 25:10
    we can't even match them!
  • 25:10 - 25:12
    How do we exceed that?"
  • 25:12 - 25:14
So, what is Jesus trying to teach?
  • 25:14 - 25:19
    Also another question that
I would have, too, is that,
  • 25:19 - 25:23
have you ever tried to earn
the favor of Christ, of God?
  • 25:23 - 25:26
    I mean, let's be real.
  • 25:26 - 25:28
Have you ever been in that situation?
  • 25:28 - 25:30
Please be willing to share, I hope,
  • 25:30 - 25:35
a time when maybe you've tried to do that.
  • 25:35 - 25:38
    What was that like?
    Go ahead, Tricia Lee.
  • 25:38 - 25:41
    (Tricia Lee) Your first question
    about how could they exceed
  • 25:41 - 25:43
    the righteousness of the Pharisees.
  • 25:43 - 25:44
    The Pharisees, you're right.
  • 25:44 - 25:46
They were very good at doing
    what the law required,
  • 25:46 - 25:49
    and the different requirements
    that they made,
  • 25:49 - 25:52
but they did not love God,
and they did not love other people
  • 25:52 - 25:53
    other than themselves.
  • 25:53 - 25:55
And we find that that was what God
  • 25:55 - 25:58
was trying to teach them was that,
at the heart of the commandments,
  • 25:58 - 26:00
loving the Lord more than anything else
  • 26:00 - 26:02
and loving your neighbor as yourself,
  • 26:02 - 26:04
and they completely missed all of that.
  • 26:04 - 26:07
So, the "checking of the boxes" meant
nothing because they didn't love God.
  • 26:07 - 26:10
They crucified Him, tried to kill Him
    at every chance they could.
  • 26:10 - 26:13
    They did not love their neighbors;
they were the ones walking past
  • 26:13 - 26:15
    the Samaritan on the road
    and these people.
  • 26:15 - 26:17
I think that it's hard because, as humans,
  • 26:17 - 26:21
and even as you grew up as a child,
you learned that if you study hard
  • 26:21 - 26:24
and you get a good grade,
or if you do this then you get a reward.
  • 26:24 - 26:26
So, it goes against the way even society
  • 26:26 - 26:28
    runs and functions, that,
    if you do something
  • 26:28 - 26:31
    then you get something.
An action has an equal reaction.
  • 26:31 - 26:34
But here God is showing us that
it really doesn't depend upon you
  • 26:34 - 26:37
or me or us, it all has
    to depend upon Christ,
  • 26:37 - 26:40
and that's where the faith comes in.
  • 26:40 - 26:43
So, it's the faith, it'is the obedience,
    it's all depending upon Christ.
  • 26:43 - 26:46
    It's really His righteousness
    that's working in us.
  • 26:46 - 26:49
    And I think what happens,
at least for me, is that...
  • 26:49 - 26:53
    and I'm sorry...it's just that
once you are honest with yourself,
  • 26:53 - 26:56
and when you realize, "I keep
    trying, and I keep failing,
  • 26:56 - 26:58
    and that's not good enough,"
at some point you just have
  • 26:58 - 27:01
to get tired of trying and
    failing, and you realize
  • 27:01 - 27:03
it can't depend upon me anymore.
  • 27:03 - 27:05
I have to reach out to somebody who I know
  • 27:05 - 27:07
    was successful in this life,
    and it was Christ.
  • 27:07 - 27:10
    (Stephanie) And who has
    the power to do it.
  • 27:10 - 27:11
To get us out of the mess.
  • 27:11 - 27:13
    And I think we've all
    been there, haven't we?
  • 27:13 - 27:14
    (Tricia Lee) Yeah!
  • 27:14 - 27:16
(Stephanie) We realize that we need Jesus.
  • 27:16 - 27:18
    Andrea, you wanted to share?
  • 27:18 - 27:20
(Andrea) I only wanted to reflect
  • 27:20 - 27:23
a little bit on your question, which was
  • 27:23 - 27:28
how would we express if we have been
  • 27:28 - 27:31
in a similar situation where we felt
  • 27:31 - 27:32
    we needed to do something
  • 27:32 - 27:35
in order to earn God's favor.
  • 27:35 - 27:38
    And I recall I was a teenager
  • 27:38 - 27:42
and have sat in church many times
  • 27:42 - 27:44
    listening to baptismal appeals
  • 27:44 - 27:52
and calls to give our lives to Jesus.
  • 27:52 - 27:54
    And as the pastor's daughter,
  • 27:54 - 27:58
    it was something I would
    listen to very frequently.
  • 27:58 - 28:02
However, I had the feeling or a tendency
  • 28:02 - 28:05
of thinking that I have to be
  • 28:05 - 28:09
very prepared to make that step.
  • 28:09 - 28:14
So for years I have resisted the call,
  • 28:14 - 28:16
    and I have considered
  • 28:16 - 28:19
    I'm not ready yet, or
    I'm not good enough...
  • 28:19 - 28:20
    (Stephanie) Wow.
  • 28:20 - 28:26
(Andrea) ...until I was 17 when I started
  • 28:26 - 28:28
to meditate more upon this decision,
  • 28:28 - 28:32
and decided I have to make this step
  • 28:32 - 28:35
even if I'm not feeling quite ready,
  • 28:35 - 28:38
and the Lord will take care of the rest.
  • 28:38 - 28:38
    (Stephanie) Amen.
  • 28:38 - 28:40
(Andrea) I cannot tell you how blessed
  • 28:40 - 28:42
    I felt afterwards.
  • 28:42 - 28:44
It was the best decision of my life.
  • 28:44 - 28:46
    (Stephanie, Team) Amen.
  • 28:46 - 28:48
(Derek) You know what Jesus said,
  • 28:48 - 28:50
    Stephanie, in the Sermon
on the Mount just a little later.
  • 28:50 - 28:53
He said, "Seek first the Kingdom
  • 28:53 - 28:55
    and His righteousness."
  • 28:55 - 28:56
    (Stephanie) Yes.
  • 28:56 - 28:57
(Derek) And really what Tricia Lee
  • 28:57 - 29:00
is saying is righteousness is a gift,
  • 29:00 - 29:02
back to that miracle of new creation
  • 29:02 - 29:04
that we talked about in a previous study.
  • 29:04 - 29:07
God is going to change us from the inside
  • 29:07 - 29:12
so that we are motivated by love,
  • 29:12 - 29:15
even in the keeping of the Commandments.
  • 29:15 - 29:17
Love to God and love to those around us.
  • 29:17 - 29:20
And that's a miracle of the new creation.
  • 29:20 - 29:23
    (Stephanie) And I believe
    John, chapter 14:15
  • 29:23 - 29:25
tells us a little bit about that.
  • 29:25 - 29:29
    John, chapter 14, verse 15.
  • 29:29 - 29:31
And, Nathan, would you be willing
  • 29:31 - 29:35
    to read that for us?
    John, chapter 14, verse 15.
  • 29:35 - 29:39
    (Nathan) Right. I'm reading
from the New King James Version.
  • 29:39 - 29:42
    John 14 and verse 15:
  • 29:46 - 29:48
    (Stephanie) Wow.
    Very simple, right?
  • 29:48 - 29:50
    (Team Member) Very plain.
  • 29:50 - 29:55
(Stephanie) So, how does your attitude
  • 29:55 - 29:58
towards God's law change when you have
  • 29:58 - 30:03
    this trusting, loving relationship
  • 30:03 - 30:07
with Jesus as your Savior and your Lord?
  • 30:07 - 30:11
    How does that change?
    Olric.
  • 30:11 - 30:13
(Olric) You want to keep it because,
  • 30:13 - 30:16
    when you have this love
    relationship with God,
  • 30:16 - 30:18
I compare it to a marriage.
  • 30:18 - 30:20
You know, for those who are
    married here on the set.
  • 30:20 - 30:23
You know, you have your spouse,
  • 30:23 - 30:26
you exchange vows and so forth.
  • 30:26 - 30:27
    And, you know, some folks,
  • 30:27 - 30:31
    they may be married for
    30 years, 40 years, 50 years,
  • 30:31 - 30:33
    and sometimes you
    question and you ask them,
  • 30:33 - 30:36
    "How did you 'guys'
    maintain that relationship,
  • 30:36 - 30:40
    that connection, the
    obedience to the vows?"
  • 30:40 - 30:41
And they just say to me,
  • 30:41 - 30:44
    "It's very simple:
    I love the other person.
  • 30:44 - 30:46
    That's why I do what I do."
  • 30:46 - 30:49
So, when you are in that love relationship
  • 30:49 - 30:51
with God, you want to do the things
  • 30:51 - 30:56
that pleases Him the same way He likes
  • 30:56 - 30:58
    doing things that blesses you.
  • 30:58 - 31:02
So, you are motivated by a love for God,
  • 31:02 - 31:05
    that is what really propels
    you to obedience.
  • 31:05 - 31:07
    (Stephanie, Olric) The
    heart's been changed.
  • 31:07 - 31:10
    (Stephanie) Missy and then Nathan.
  • 31:10 - 31:13
(Missy) I see Scripture as God
  • 31:13 - 31:16
    in continual pursuit of humanity,
  • 31:16 - 31:19
    "Look at me; look at my face;
  • 31:19 - 31:21
look at what I've done for you.
  • 31:21 - 31:23
Please, keep your attention on me.
  • 31:23 - 31:25
Look at what I've said in My Word.
  • 31:25 - 31:27
    Get to know me."
  • 31:27 - 31:28
    (Stephanie) Yes.
  • 31:28 - 31:32
    (Missy) When we are able
    to hone in on that,
  • 31:32 - 31:36
    the Law is a natural
    result of the relationship.
  • 31:36 - 31:39
    (Stephanie) Powerful.
    Nathan.
  • 31:39 - 31:43
(Nathan) Well, I love this woman.
  • 31:43 - 31:48
    (Derek) You better tell the
    people that that's your wife.
  • 31:48 - 31:52
(Nathan) This is my wife, and, you know,
  • 31:52 - 31:57
    if I do something that
    hurts her, that hurts me.
  • 31:57 - 31:59
    To see my wife hurting
  • 31:59 - 32:01
    because of something I've done
  • 32:01 - 32:03
    would break my heart.
  • 32:03 - 32:05
So when we're in love with the Lord,
  • 32:05 - 32:08
we realize that when we break
    His Law we're hurting Him.
  • 32:08 - 32:11
He's given us His Law because
He wants us to be happy.
  • 32:11 - 32:12
    (Stephanie) Yes.
  • 32:12 - 32:14
(Nathan) And when I wander away
  • 32:14 - 32:16
from that Law that He's given,
  • 32:16 - 32:19
which is a Law of freedom,
    a Law of liberty,
  • 32:19 - 32:21
and it's a Law that brings joy to my life,
  • 32:21 - 32:24
I know that not only am I hurting myself,
  • 32:24 - 32:25
    but I'm hurting Him.
  • 32:25 - 32:26
    (Stephanie) Yes.
  • 32:26 - 32:28
(Nathan) So my love for Him just propels
  • 32:28 - 32:30
me into naturally obeying the Law
  • 32:30 - 32:32
    because I don't want to break His heart;
  • 32:32 - 32:34
I don't want to hurt Him, as well.
  • 32:34 - 32:36
    (Stephanie) Okay, Joshua, and then
  • 32:36 - 32:38
we'll go to Tricia Lee, and then
    we have to move on.
  • 32:38 - 32:41
(Joshua) I believe that we not only serve
  • 32:41 - 32:43
a holy God but we serve a practical God.
  • 32:43 - 32:45
So, when I look at His Commandments,
  • 32:45 - 32:48
    I see that even if I weren't a Christian
  • 32:48 - 32:52
it would be in my best interest
    to still keep these Commandments.
  • 32:52 - 32:53
    (Stephanie) Amen.
  • 32:53 - 32:56
(Joshua) So, if you think about what it
  • 32:56 - 32:58
would be like to murder someone, and what
  • 32:58 - 33:00
you would have to live with after that,
  • 33:00 - 33:02
if you know what it feels like
  • 33:02 - 33:04
to commit adultery and see the effects
  • 33:04 - 33:07
of that trickling after, if you look
  • 33:07 - 33:09
at each and every Law, you'll see,
  • 33:09 - 33:11
    "Wait a minute.
    He's not telling me
  • 33:11 - 33:14
    to keep these Laws as
    hoops to jump through
  • 33:14 - 33:15
in order to make it into Heaven,"
  • 33:15 - 33:23
but it's for our own good and for our
best interest to keep these Laws.
  • 33:23 - 33:24
    (Stephanie) Yes.
  • 33:24 - 33:27
    (Tricia Lee) Something that Missy
  • 33:27 - 33:29
    and Joshua mentioned
    about getting to know God
  • 33:29 - 33:31
and what's in our best interest,
  • 33:31 - 33:35
I think that the Devil's deception is that
we would think of God as someone
  • 33:35 - 33:38
who is out to get us, someone
    that cannot be trusted.
  • 33:38 - 33:41
And if He's a Being that is not
to be trusted or, you know,
  • 33:41 - 33:44
wants to hurt us, then I don't
    care about what He's saying,
  • 33:44 - 33:46
I don't care about His Laws,
    what's not good for me.
  • 33:46 - 33:49
When we do exactly what Missy is saying,
  • 33:49 - 33:52
try to get to know Him, allow Him
to enter our lives, and we see who He is,
  • 33:52 - 33:55
like, how Jesus came, the best
example, a revelation of the Father,
  • 33:55 - 33:59
He lived a whole life, when
we see the life of Christ,
  • 33:59 - 34:01
how could we not want to be more like Him?
  • 34:01 - 34:04
How could we not want to see
    truly who the Father is,
  • 34:04 - 34:07
    and then everything He's saying
starts to make sense as things
  • 34:07 - 34:10
    for our best interest, as
    things that will help us
  • 34:10 - 34:12
be in a loving relationship with Him.
  • 34:12 - 34:15
So even Christ coming and expounding
    and fulfilling the Law
  • 34:15 - 34:18
was us seeing the Father as who
He really is, not the deception,
  • 34:18 - 34:21
not the lies, the angry God
    with lightening and thunderbolts.
  • 34:21 - 34:24
When we see that, then the Law
    starts to be something beautiful
  • 34:24 - 34:27
for our best interest and something
that helps us be in a good, loving,
  • 34:27 - 34:29
    strong relationship with Him.
  • 34:29 - 34:31
    (Stephanie) We have full confidence
  • 34:31 - 34:33
that He has the best interest in mind.
  • 34:33 - 34:35
We need to move on to God's ideal
  • 34:35 - 34:37
for His children, which somewhat connects
  • 34:37 - 34:40
    with what we've already
    been speaking about.
  • 34:40 - 34:43
Matthew, chapter 5, verse 48, and, Nicole,
  • 34:43 - 34:45
if you would be willing to read that
  • 34:45 - 34:47
for us, and then we'll follow it up
  • 34:47 - 34:53
with Luke 6:36, and, Nancy, if you
would read that one after Matthew 5:48.
  • 34:53 - 34:54
    (Nicole) Okay, Matthew 5:48.
  • 34:54 - 34:58
I'm reading it from the New International
    Version, and the Bible says:
  • 35:01 - 35:05
    (Stephanie) And then Luke 6:36.
  • 35:05 - 35:12
    We're looking at these two
    in conjunction with each other.
  • 35:12 - 35:15
(Nancy) Okay, and this is from the
    New King James Version.
  • 35:21 - 35:26
    (Stephanie) All right, what is
    Jesus asking us to do?
  • 35:26 - 35:29
    (Olric) Be like God.
  • 35:29 - 35:30
    (Stephanie) To be like God.
  • 35:30 - 35:34
He's asking us, may I mention it this way:
  • 35:34 - 35:42
He's asking us to do the
    impossible without Him.
  • 35:42 - 35:44
It would be impossible without Him.
  • 35:44 - 35:46
    You understand what I'm saying?
  • 35:46 - 35:50
But He's giving us the strength to do it,
  • 35:50 - 35:54
so, it's not impossible, but without Him,
  • 35:54 - 35:57
if we're trying to do it
    as only head knowledge,
  • 35:57 - 35:59
it is going to be impossible.
  • 35:59 - 36:01
    (Derek) And, you know, Stephanie,
  • 36:01 - 36:02
    sometimes people read that like,
  • 36:02 - 36:04
"Be perfect," and think that's the way to
  • 36:04 - 36:06
    make God love us, right?
  • 36:06 - 36:08
    Never quite good enough.
  • 36:08 - 36:10
That's not what it's saying at all.
  • 36:10 - 36:11
    (Stephanie) Right.
  • 36:11 - 36:13
    (Derek) That's why Luke's wording
  • 36:13 - 36:15
    is different is important.
  • 36:15 - 36:16
He's saying, "I want you to reflect
  • 36:16 - 36:19
the beauty of my Father's character."
  • 36:19 - 36:20
And what does it look like?
  • 36:20 - 36:22
Jesus said, "If you want to know
  • 36:22 - 36:24
what the Father is like, look at Me."
  • 36:24 - 36:27
So, He's saying, "I want you to
reflect my character to the world,"
  • 36:27 - 36:31
and that is not to earn His love.
  • 36:31 - 36:35
    He already loves us.
It's out of that loving relationship.
  • 36:35 - 36:38
    (Stephanie) Yes.
Go ahead, you wanted to say something.
  • 36:38 - 36:40
(Andrea) I also wanted to add
  • 36:40 - 36:43
    to what Elder Morris said,
  • 36:43 - 36:47
    that this perfection that
    God is calling us to
  • 36:47 - 36:52
is not so much a state of sinlessness
  • 36:52 - 36:56
as the spiritual maturity to which we need
  • 36:56 - 37:00
to attain, and the Lord can
    help us to attain that.
  • 37:00 - 37:02
And, of course, at each state
  • 37:02 - 37:05
    of the Christain's experience,
  • 37:05 - 37:08
there is a different level of maturity
  • 37:08 - 37:13
    because what is perfect for
    a grade one student to add 2 + 2
  • 37:13 - 37:16
is not perfect for a grade five student
  • 37:16 - 37:17
    or a grade eight student.
  • 37:17 - 37:21
    So this perfection is where we are at;
  • 37:21 - 37:26
if we just fulfill what God requires
us to do at that stage,
  • 37:26 - 37:29
we have attained to God's ideal.
  • 37:29 - 37:31
    (Stephanie) Amen.
    All right, Olric.
  • 37:31 - 37:34
    (Olric) Let me encapsulate
    what she's saying.
  • 37:34 - 37:38
At each stage, God reveals light to us.
  • 37:38 - 37:41
He reveals more of Himself to us.
  • 37:41 - 37:44
Perfection that is being talked about here
  • 37:44 - 37:49
    is the progressive state
    of growth, Christian maturity.
  • 37:49 - 37:51
A plant starts out as a seedling,
  • 37:51 - 37:55
but then it grows to a big tree
    and bears fruit.
  • 37:55 - 37:58
A baby starts off walking on fours
  • 37:58 - 38:02
    and mumbling, but eventually
they grow, and they walk on legs,
  • 38:02 - 38:05
and now they can talk well
    and do things for themselves.
  • 38:05 - 38:07
There is maturing; there is growth.
  • 38:07 - 38:13
God's ideal of perfection is that
    you should continually grow.
  • 38:13 - 38:15
Not that you reach a stage here,
  • 38:15 - 38:18
    where, "Hah! You're perfect.
Now you don't need to go any further."
  • 38:18 - 38:19
    No.
  • 38:19 - 38:23
    His idea of perfection is
    progressive Christian maturity.
  • 38:23 - 38:26
(Stephanie) Go ahead, go ahead, Kyle.
  • 38:26 - 38:29
    (Kyle) You know, somebody
    might be worried,
  • 38:29 - 38:32
"Well, I'm not perfect, and I
    have all these faults,"
  • 38:32 - 38:35
and my only thing I think we
could all say: "Look to Jesus."
  • 38:35 - 38:37
    (Stephanie, Team) Yes.
  • 38:37 - 38:39
(Kyle) Look to Jesus, because Jesus,
  • 38:39 - 38:40
as we look to Him, "If ye love Me,
  • 38:40 - 38:42
    keep My Commandments," He says.
  • 38:42 - 38:45
The only way that we can truly grow
  • 38:45 - 38:46
in likeness to Him is to fall in love
  • 38:46 - 38:49
with Him, and how do we
    fall in love with Him?
  • 38:49 - 38:51
By looking to Him, spending time with Him.
  • 38:51 - 38:53
That is so key because otherwise
    we're just going to try
  • 38:53 - 38:56
    to earn our righteousness, and
that will never get us anywhere.
  • 38:56 - 38:58
So we must look to Jesus.
  • 38:58 - 38:59
    (Stephanie) Beautiful, beautiful.
  • 38:59 - 39:01
So my question, I think we already have
  • 39:01 - 39:03
an answer for it, but my question is:
  • 39:03 - 39:06
Is this a means of salvation
  • 39:06 - 39:09
or an evidence of a living,
    loving connection with Jesus?
  • 39:09 - 39:10
    (Olric) Simple.
  • 39:10 - 39:14
it's an evidence of a living connection
  • 39:14 - 39:16
with Jesus, not a means to salvation.
  • 39:16 - 39:17
    (Stephanie) All right.
  • 39:17 - 39:20
Will you share with us a
    verse that supports that?
  • 39:20 - 39:21
    (Olric) Galatians 2...
  • 39:21 - 39:23
    (Stephanie) Galatians, chapter 2.
  • 39:23 - 39:25
So, Olric, you'll go ahead and read
  • 39:25 - 39:30
    Galatians, chapter 2,
    I believe, 20 and 21.
  • 39:30 - 39:33
    (Olric) Galatians, chapter 2,
    verses 20 and 21?
  • 39:33 - 39:34
    (Stephanie) Yes.
  • 39:34 - 39:40
    (Olric) Reading from the
    New Living Translation,
  • 39:40 - 39:42
    the Word of God says:
  • 40:10 - 40:11
    (Stephanie) Wow.
  • 40:11 - 40:15
    Another verse, another
    promise that we can share.
  • 40:15 - 40:18
Someone out there, as Kyle was saying,
  • 40:18 - 40:23
may be wondering, "How do I do this?"
  • 40:23 - 40:24
    "How is this practical?"
  • 40:24 - 40:25
    Yes.
  • 40:25 - 40:29
(Derek) Let me just say people may not
know who wrote the Galatian letter,
  • 40:29 - 40:32
    but Saul of Tarsus, later
    called Paul the Apostle,
  • 40:32 - 40:36
he had gone down that road
    of trying to earn righteousness.
  • 40:36 - 40:37
    (Team): Yes.
  • 40:37 - 40:40
    (Derek) He said, "I was
    flawless," you know?
  • 40:40 - 40:42
    But he was killing people
    who believe in Jesus.
  • 40:42 - 40:43
    (Stephanie) Yes.
  • 40:43 - 40:47
    (Derek) So, he understands
the miracle of his changed heart.
  • 40:47 - 40:49
And I just want to emphasize,
  • 40:49 - 40:51
I know it is one stage and then another,
  • 40:51 - 40:54
but it's a miracle at every stage.
  • 40:54 - 40:55
    (Team): Amen. Yes.
  • 40:55 - 40:59
(Derek) For us to be who God's
calling us to be, is a miracle.
  • 40:59 - 40:59
    (Stephanie) It is.
  • 40:59 - 41:02
(Derek) And Paul would be the first one
  • 41:02 - 41:03
to say that it is a miracle.
  • 41:03 - 41:05
    That's why he says that
    if anyone is in Christ,
  • 41:05 - 41:07
she or he is a new creation.
  • 41:07 - 41:08
    (Stephanie) Amen.
  • 41:08 - 41:10
(Derek) Because he's seen it himself.
  • 41:10 - 41:11
    (Stephanie) Amen.
  • 41:11 - 41:13
(Olric) It's key that in that verse
  • 41:13 - 41:16
is mentioned Christ now lives in me.
  • 41:16 - 41:20
He says, "It is no longer
I who live, but I died.
  • 41:20 - 41:23
I surrender self and the old way,
  • 41:23 - 41:25
and I accept Christ in my heart,
  • 41:25 - 41:28
    and He changes me internally.
  • 41:28 - 41:32
Now what I do is motivated by love."
  • 41:32 - 41:35
    So, it is very important
    to see the transformation.
  • 41:35 - 41:36
(Stephanie) Would you share with us
  • 41:36 - 41:38
    a time when you experienced
  • 41:38 - 41:43
or you saw someone who represented
  • 41:43 - 41:45
    the character of Christ.
  • 41:45 - 41:48
What impact did that have on you?
  • 41:48 - 41:53
    You saw that someone had
    the character of Christ.
  • 41:53 - 41:56
What was the impact on you, or what was
  • 41:56 - 41:58
    the impact when someone saw
  • 41:58 - 42:01
the character of Christ in you?
  • 42:01 - 42:03
What impact did that have on you?
  • 42:03 - 42:06
(Derek) Stephanie, I was 7 years old...
  • 42:06 - 42:07
    (Stephanie) Go ahead.
  • 42:07 - 42:10
(Derek) Oh good, if I can
    just share real briefly.
  • 42:10 - 42:13
...and my teacher in Form 2
(this is back in the UK)
  • 42:13 - 42:17
was full of the love of Jesus.
  • 42:17 - 42:19
I was only privileged to go
  • 42:19 - 42:21
to a Christian school for four years,
  • 42:21 - 42:25
but that one year with Christine Emmerson
  • 42:25 - 42:27
    my teacher changed my life...
  • 42:27 - 42:28
    (Stephanie) Wow.
  • 42:28 - 42:31
    (Derek) ...because she was
full of the love of God.
  • 42:31 - 42:34
And when you see that, and I think
  • 42:34 - 42:39
    that's the ultimate witness,
it's not just what we say.
  • 42:39 - 42:43
When the love of God fills a heart,
  • 42:43 - 42:47
    we just say, "I just
    want to be like that,"
  • 42:47 - 42:48
and that person says, "Well, I'm
  • 42:48 - 42:51
a follower of Jesus, so follow Him."
  • 42:51 - 42:52
    (Stephanie) Amen.
  • 42:52 - 42:55
    Reflecting the light of Jesus.
    Nancy.
  • 42:55 - 43:00
    (Nancy) My dad is full
    of the love of Jesus.
  • 43:00 - 43:05
And, you know, what he does is he studies
  • 43:05 - 43:07
the Bible in the morning, a chapter
  • 43:07 - 43:10
in the morning, and a chapter
  • 43:10 - 43:13
in the evening, a chapter in
the New, a chapter in the Old.
  • 43:13 - 43:15
I like to think about it
  • 43:15 - 43:20
    as him "marinating" his life
    in Jesus, you know?
  • 43:20 - 43:23
It's a cooking term, when you take
  • 43:23 - 43:27
some meat or some tofu, and you put it,
  • 43:27 - 43:32
you know, in all of those
    sauces and things.
  • 43:32 - 43:34
Well, that's what he does with his life,
  • 43:34 - 43:38
    and so everything he does
    is covered in Jesus.
  • 43:38 - 43:39
    (Team) Amen.
  • 43:39 - 43:43
(Nancy) He's been a great example to me.
  • 43:43 - 43:44
    (Derek/Stephanie) Amen.
  • 43:44 - 43:45
    (Team) Praise God.
  • 43:45 - 43:49
(Stephanie) I'm guessing that he's been
  • 43:49 - 43:50
    on his knees praying often,
  • 43:50 - 43:54
and I think that's the section that
  • 43:54 - 43:55
we want to move into next.
  • 43:55 - 43:57
We've talked about the head knowledge,
  • 43:57 - 44:00
and that it reaches our hearts,
  • 44:00 - 44:04
and, as a result, our hands or our actions
  • 44:04 - 44:07
produce what has already happened inside.
  • 44:07 - 44:10
Now we are going to talk
    about how we sustain that,
  • 44:10 - 44:13
    and that is by spending
    time with God in prayer.
  • 44:13 - 44:17
So, Juliana, if you would read
  • 44:17 - 44:22
    Matthew, chapter 6, verses 5 through 13.
  • 44:22 - 44:28
    Matthew chapter 6, verses 5 through 13,
  • 44:28 - 44:32
talking about Jesus teaching on prayer.
  • 44:32 - 44:35
    (Juliana) I'm reading from
    the New King James Version:
  • 45:51 - 45:53
    (Stephanie/Team) Amen.
  • 45:53 - 45:55
    (Stephanie) What important lessons
  • 45:55 - 45:58
    can we learn about prayer
    from Jesus' example?
  • 45:58 - 46:01
    Go ahead, Tricia Lee.
  • 46:01 - 46:06
(Tricia Lee) I like that we're counseled
    not to have vain repetitions,
  • 46:06 - 46:10
so, there were practices that heathens
had at the time but also was part
  • 46:10 - 46:12
    of the religious practices
    to repeat certain things.
  • 46:12 - 46:15
"The more I say it, then
the more likely God will hear,"
  • 46:15 - 46:20
but here this model, in its
    simplest way, is a conversation.
  • 46:20 - 46:24
I think, even in talking to God, we are
    acknowledging that He's hearing us.
  • 46:24 - 46:27
We're not just saying phrases out,
    and hoping they go somewhere.
  • 46:27 - 46:30
    We're actually speaking to another
Being who can hear and understand
  • 46:30 - 46:32
and wants to have a conversation with us.
  • 46:32 - 46:34
(Stephanie) So, we have full confidence
  • 46:34 - 46:36
in the Person that we love and trust.
  • 46:36 - 46:37
    (Tricia Lee) Yes.
  • 46:37 - 46:39
(Stephanie) Nathan, and then we'll go to Olric.
  • 46:39 - 46:41
(Nathan) I can't miss the distinction
  • 46:41 - 46:44
Jesus is making between people who pray
  • 46:44 - 46:47
to be seen by others, and it's not just
  • 46:47 - 46:50
what they say but where they
are when they are saying it.
  • 46:50 - 46:51
They're out on the street corners,
  • 46:51 - 46:54
versus people who are praying in secret.
  • 46:54 - 46:56
He says, "Go into your room and pray
  • 46:56 - 46:58
to your Father who is also in secret."
  • 46:58 - 47:00
    So, in other words, what
    He's showing us here
  • 47:00 - 47:02
is this is an intimate time.
  • 47:02 - 47:05
I'm sorry if this sounds a little
  • 47:05 - 47:07
too far fetched, but just like
  • 47:07 - 47:10
a married couple behind closed doors
  • 47:10 - 47:12
and the intimacy that they share.
  • 47:12 - 47:16
    They are having quiet time
    or conversation, you know.
  • 47:16 - 47:18
No one else is there, and this is
  • 47:18 - 47:20
the same way, He says, "With your Father
  • 47:20 - 47:23
    in Heaven, you are behind
    closed doors, intimate communion."
  • 47:23 - 47:24
    It's just you and Him.
  • 47:24 - 47:26
You're not showing off to the world.
  • 47:26 - 47:28
You're not doing this before others.
  • 47:28 - 47:29
    You're having quiet time.
  • 47:29 - 47:31
So, Jesus wants us to be having
  • 47:31 - 47:34
    intimate communion
    with our Father quietly.
  • 47:34 - 47:36
    (Stephanie) Just to think that
  • 47:36 - 47:39
He's willing to spend quiet time with us.
  • 47:39 - 47:39
    (Team) Amen.
  • 47:39 - 47:41
(Stephanie) The God of the universe.
  • 47:41 - 47:44
    I mean, think about that.
    That's powerful.
  • 47:44 - 47:46
(Olric) It's very key that Nathan
  • 47:46 - 47:51
    points that out because in
verse 16 of that same chapter
  • 47:51 - 47:54
    He uses the word "hypocrite."
  • 47:54 - 47:57
    He says, "Don't fast as
    the hypocrites do."
  • 47:57 - 47:59
That word is a key word,
  • 47:59 - 48:01
because in the Greek it means an "actor,"
  • 48:01 - 48:04
    you know, someone who puts
    on a show, a performance.
  • 48:04 - 48:09
So, what is Jesus saying about these
individuals who pray to be heard
  • 48:09 - 48:14
by many people or use many words
to look religious and so forth?
  • 48:14 - 48:16
    He's saying, "You're just acting,"
  • 48:16 - 48:19
and my Bible says to me, "If you harbor
  • 48:19 - 48:23
    iniquity in your heart, God
    will not hear your prayers."
  • 48:23 - 48:27
This was a problem with the religious
leaders and those who were doing it
  • 48:27 - 48:30
for outward show; the heart wasn't right.
  • 48:30 - 48:31
    (Stephanie) Right, He was asking
  • 48:31 - 48:33
    for an inward change.
  • 48:33 - 48:34
    Go ahead, Nicole.
  • 48:34 - 48:36
    (Nicole) Just to take it
    a little differently,
  • 48:36 - 48:38
you can also teach someone how to pray,
  • 48:38 - 48:41
so when I look at this verse
and I look at this text,
  • 48:41 - 48:45
I think about children and make sure
that we instill within our children
  • 48:45 - 48:47
the desire to pray and the need to pray.
  • 48:47 - 48:50
We have to teach them how to pray
and how to spend that time with God,
  • 48:50 - 48:53
so they can then grow to a
    place when they can spend
  • 48:53 - 48:56
that quiet time in their "closets"
    knowing what they're to say.
  • 48:56 - 48:57
So I think that we should really
  • 48:57 - 48:59
remember that we all have to
teach our children how to pray.
  • 48:59 - 49:00
    (Stephanie) Yes.
  • 49:00 - 49:04
    (Derek) You know, I'm thinking,
in the light of what Nathan said,
  • 49:04 - 49:06
in the little book "Steps to Christ,"
  • 49:06 - 49:08
it speaks about prayer as the opening
  • 49:08 - 49:10
of the heart to God as to a friend.
  • 49:10 - 49:11
    That's very personal.
  • 49:11 - 49:15
Even the Lord's prayer could become
  • 49:15 - 49:17
    a vain repetition, if you
    just repeat it ten times
  • 49:17 - 49:20
and think that God will hear
you by saying it ten times.
  • 49:20 - 49:23
In fact, if you look at the Gospels,
  • 49:23 - 49:25
Jesus prays a lot of different prayers.
  • 49:25 - 49:26
    (Stephanie) He does.
  • 49:26 - 49:29
(Derek) He is opening His heart
to His Father as to a friend.
  • 49:29 - 49:31
And I think what I'm hearing
  • 49:31 - 49:32
in this great Sermon on the Mount,
  • 49:32 - 49:34
    just like with loving obedience,
  • 49:34 - 49:37
is when you love God you
    want to talk to Him.
  • 49:37 - 49:38
    (Stephanie) Yes.
  • 49:38 - 49:40
(Derek) And you want to listen, too.
  • 49:40 - 49:42
    (Stephanie) You have
    an open communication.
  • 49:42 - 49:44
Juliana, and then we need to move on.
  • 49:44 - 49:47
    (Juliana) I was just going
    to say really succinctly
  • 49:47 - 49:48
that what this says to me,
  • 49:48 - 49:51
and I guess why I choked up
    trying to read it,
  • 49:51 - 49:54
was that it says we have
    a direct connection.
  • 49:54 - 49:55
    (Team Member) Amen.
  • 49:55 - 49:57
    (Juliana) We don't have
    anything else in the way.
  • 49:57 - 49:59
That the God of the universe
  • 49:59 - 50:04
wants to talk to me and
wants me to talk to Him.
  • 50:04 - 50:05
    (Derek) Amen.
  • 50:05 - 50:09
    (Stephanie) Wow, that's powerful.
  • 50:09 - 50:13
Let's move on; Matthew, chapter 7.
  • 50:13 - 50:14
Thank you so much for sharing.
  • 50:14 - 50:18
    Matthew, chapter 7, and
    we'll go to verses 24 to 27,
  • 50:18 - 50:20
and, Jason, would you read that for us?
  • 50:20 - 50:23
Matthew, chapter 7, and we're moving
  • 50:23 - 50:25
into our last section of our study
  • 50:25 - 50:28
that is "Living What We Learn."
  • 50:28 - 50:29
    Go ahead.
  • 50:29 - 50:32
    (Jason) I'll be reading from
    the New King James Version,
  • 50:32 - 50:36
    Matthew, chapter 7, verse 24 through 27.
  • 51:16 - 51:22
    (Stephanie) What is Jesus'
    appeal in these verse?
  • 51:22 - 51:25
    What is Jesus' appeal?
    Missy.
  • 51:25 - 51:27
(Missy) Trust and obey, Just listen
  • 51:27 - 51:30
to what He has to say and do them.
  • 51:30 - 51:32
    It's just simple.
  • 51:32 - 51:35
    (Stephanie) Yes.
    Go ahead, Joshua.
  • 51:35 - 51:36
(Joshua) I would just say to build
  • 51:36 - 51:38
    your foundation on Christ.
  • 51:38 - 51:40
    Essentially, if you look
    at family structures,
  • 51:40 - 51:43
it never made sense to me as to why
  • 51:43 - 51:46
    atheists get married, you know?
  • 51:46 - 51:48
Think about it just for a second.
  • 51:48 - 51:50
    Just picture that in your
    mind for a minute.
  • 51:50 - 51:52
How is it, if you're not focused
  • 51:52 - 51:56
on the love of Christ and the beauty
  • 51:56 - 51:59
of His Word and the understanding
  • 51:59 - 52:00
of His heart rather than your own,
  • 52:00 - 52:02
how is it that you can unite yourself
  • 52:02 - 52:05
in a marriage and try to build your family
  • 52:05 - 52:07
on a structure that cannot stand,
  • 52:07 - 52:11
    that's built on worldly
    principles that are like sand?
  • 52:11 - 52:13
They can change at any time.
  • 52:13 - 52:14
    They are weak.
    They are futile.
  • 52:14 - 52:17
    So, when I think about
    that in my own life,
  • 52:17 - 52:21
I say, "Okay, I have to build
    my foundation on Christ."
  • 52:21 - 52:21
    (Stephanie) Amen.
  • 52:21 - 52:23
    (Joshua) Because outside of that,
  • 52:23 - 52:26
    everything else is just going
to be a wreck, you know,
  • 52:26 - 52:27
    and it's really that simple.
  • 52:27 - 52:31
I think it's a lesson to us to just say,
  • 52:31 - 52:32
    "Okay, let's go about things
  • 52:32 - 52:36
    in the smartest way
    possible," and this is it.
  • 52:36 - 52:39
    (Stephanie) Nathan and
then we'll come up to Kyle.
  • 52:39 - 52:41
    (Nathan) Jesus is comparing
    two kinds of people here.
  • 52:41 - 52:43
Both of them heard His Word. He says,
  • 52:43 - 52:45
"Whoever hears these sayings of Mine
  • 52:45 - 52:48
and does them," and then He says later,
  • 52:48 - 52:50
    "Whoever hears these sayings
    and does not do them."
  • 52:50 - 52:52
    So it's not about just
    hearing and knowing,
  • 52:52 - 52:54
    it's actually about
    putting it in practice.
  • 52:54 - 52:56
He says, "The one who puts into practice
  • 52:56 - 52:58
these teachings of Mine, this is
  • 52:58 - 53:00
solid rock foundation that you can
  • 53:00 - 53:03
    build on, and it's trustworthy,
    so build on this.
  • 53:03 - 53:05
But if you hear it and don't do it,
  • 53:05 - 53:07
whatever you're building on is like sand."
  • 53:07 - 53:09
(Nathan) It's not a solid foundation.
  • 53:09 - 53:12
    (Stephanie) You won't
    make it through the storm.
  • 53:12 - 53:13
    Kyle.
  • 53:13 - 53:15
(Kyle) I'll just add to what Nathan said.
  • 53:15 - 53:16
Just to think that this whole time
  • 53:16 - 53:19
    in Matthew 5 we've been
    looking at, you know,
  • 53:19 - 53:20
    Jesus' standard of righteousness versus
  • 53:20 - 53:22
    what our human standard is.
  • 53:22 - 53:27
And if we build our lives
    on our own righteousness,
  • 53:27 - 53:29
on our own works, then it's like sand.
  • 53:29 - 53:30
    We have no real foundation.
  • 53:30 - 53:34
The only Rock is the Rock
    of Christ's righteousness
  • 53:34 - 53:35
that can get us through the storm.
  • 53:35 - 53:37
    So, you know, it all connects;
  • 53:37 - 53:39
    it's dependence upon Him,
  • 53:39 - 53:40
    even the prayer thing.
  • 53:40 - 53:42
Prayer is all about dependence on God,
  • 53:42 - 53:44
    and depending on His righteousness,
  • 53:44 - 53:46
on His character in our hearts,
  • 53:46 - 53:50
will give us the foundation that will
  • 53:50 - 53:52
    carry us through that storm.
  • 53:52 - 53:53
    (Stephanie) Amen.
  • 53:53 - 53:55
Tricia Lee, did you have a comment...?
  • 53:55 - 53:59
(Tricia Lee) I was just reflecting on what
    Juliana mentioned about the invitation
  • 53:59 - 54:01
to connect with the Lord, "our Father."
  • 54:01 - 54:05
Even in reading this, I just feel as
though personally I would be a fool
  • 54:05 - 54:09
not to accept that invitation, that
the great God of the universe came,
  • 54:09 - 54:13
sent His Son, went to all this length
to show me who He really is,
  • 54:13 - 54:16
to show me what His Law means,
to show me how to love other people,
  • 54:16 - 54:19
who wants to love me and
wants to accept my love to Him,
  • 54:19 - 54:22
    and He's just giving me
    the simple way to Him
  • 54:22 - 54:27
that I have to be kind of silly in
seeing all of this and then saying,
  • 54:27 - 54:29
"No, I'd rather build it my own way."
  • 54:29 - 54:34
It just really feels like it's just a
    heart-felt invitation, and that, wow,
  • 54:34 - 54:37
how do I respond to that.
I was just thinking about that.
  • 54:37 - 54:39
(Stephanie) So I want to move on.
  • 54:39 - 54:42
We have one more verse to read,
  • 54:42 - 54:46
    and that's John, chapter 13, verse 17.
  • 54:46 - 54:51
I'll ask Tricia Lee if you
    would read that for us.
  • 54:51 - 54:54
The question is, why does Jesus want
  • 54:54 - 54:57
us to live in harmony with His Word?
  • 54:57 - 55:00
(Tricia Lee) John, chapter 13, verse 17.
  • 55:00 - 55:05
I'm reading from the New King
    James Version, and it reads:
  • 55:10 - 55:12
(Stephanie) Tricia Lee, I think that is
  • 55:12 - 55:14
    what you were talking about.
  • 55:14 - 55:15
    (Tricia Lee) It's a blessing.
  • 55:15 - 55:17
(Stephanie) God wants us to be happy.
  • 55:17 - 55:18
    (Team) Amen. Yes.
  • 55:18 - 55:20
(Stephanie) It has to go from the head
  • 55:20 - 55:23
    to the heart, to the
    hands, and to the "how."
  • 55:23 - 55:25
    How do I do that?
  • 55:25 - 55:26
    By spending time with Jesus
  • 55:26 - 55:30
    and falling in love with
    my Savior and Lord.
  • 55:30 - 55:31
    Then what happens?
  • 55:31 - 55:33
    When you're sharing with others,
  • 55:33 - 55:36
    doesn't it make you happy?
  • 55:36 - 55:38
You're in the will of God.
  • 55:38 - 55:40
There's no better peace than that.
  • 55:40 - 55:42
    Go ahead, Olric.
  • 55:42 - 55:45
    (Olric) Let me just wrap
    this study here together.
  • 55:45 - 55:47
We see clearly Jesus is saying,
  • 55:47 - 55:52
"The law is important, you must keep it,
  • 55:52 - 55:54
but I don't want you to keep it
  • 55:54 - 55:57
    from an unconverted heart because
  • 55:57 - 56:01
to do that is to do it with a heart
  • 56:01 - 56:03
that is not connected to the love of God,
  • 56:03 - 56:07
that is devoid of the right
    motives and right thoughts."
  • 56:07 - 56:11
So, keep the Law but make
    sure the heart is converted.
  • 56:11 - 56:12
    Why?
  • 56:12 - 56:15
    Because when you do
    that you build your faith.
  • 56:15 - 56:19
    (Stephanie) Our faith is
    built upon the Rock.
  • 56:19 - 56:21
And our eyes are fixed on Jesus,...
  • 56:21 - 56:22

    and Finisher of our faith,
  • 56:25 - 56:27
and we share that with joy in our hearts.

at His teaching because He taught as One
  • 56:41 - 56:44
having authority, and really our authority
  • 56:44 - 56:47

  • 56:50 - 56:52
    I have to be honest.
  • 56:52 - 56:55
If I look at God's ideal,
    it's an impossible standard
  • 56:55 - 56:59
unless a miracle happens in my heart,
  • 56:59 - 57:01
