The Meteoric Rise of France's Emmanuel Macron
-
0:04 - 0:07Political rookie Emmanuel Macron
is leading the polls -
0:07 - 0:11and is tipped to be
France's next president. -
0:14 - 0:19The 39-year-old’s meteoric rise has shaken
the political establishment... -
0:19 - 0:21while also being its last hope.
-
0:21 - 0:27His centrist, pro-European, open-border views
stand in stark contrast to the rising voices -
0:27 - 0:30of Europe's resurgent far right.
-
0:30 - 0:35This is how Macron’s unabashed ambition
drove him from star pupil, -
0:35 - 0:37to banker, to political rebel
-
0:37 - 0:40and now the hot
favourite to lead France. -
0:43 - 0:47Macron was raised in the town
of Amiens, two hours north of Paris… -
0:47 - 0:49This is the house he grew up in.
-
0:49 - 0:55The eldest of three children from a family
of doctors, he attended a Jesuit school. -
0:55 - 0:59A precocious kid, he preferred the company
of teachers to other pupils. -
0:59 - 1:02And it was at school that
he met his future wife. -
1:02 - 1:05Brigitte Auziere was
coach of the drama club. -
1:05 - 1:09They worked closely together
to re-write a school production -
1:09 - 1:10He was 16.
-
1:10 - 1:13She was 40, and married
with three children -
1:13 - 1:17Gossip about their relationship
began to spread -
1:17 - 1:20and Macron left Amiens
to finish high school -
1:20 - 1:24at an elite establishment in Paris.
-
1:24 - 1:26Auziere followed later to teach
-
1:26 - 1:29and the pair married
when Macron was 30. -
1:29 - 1:34After school he attended university
in Paris, studying Philosophy, -
1:34 - 1:37then went to the prestigious
National School of Administration, -
1:37 - 1:40a breeding ground
for the French elite. -
1:41 - 1:45He works for four years as an inspector
at the Ministry of Economy, before moving -
1:45 - 1:49to the renowned investment
bank Rothschild. -
1:49 - 1:53Macron was quickly parachuted
into managing a massive acquisition. -
1:53 - 1:59Nestlé has agreed to buy Pfizer's infant nutrition
business for almost 12 billion dollars. -
1:59 - 2:03When the deal went through,
he got a big payout. -
2:03 - 2:07Then in 2012 Macron was offered
a position working for the new president, -
2:07 - 2:11and a personal friend,
Francois Hollande. -
2:11 - 2:16Two years later, Hollande gave him
the prestigious position of Minister of Economy. -
2:16 - 2:18He was 36.
-
2:18 - 2:23But by now Hollande’s public approval
rating had fallen to historic lows. -
2:23 - 2:27Macron threw himself into a plan
to loosen economic regulation… -
2:27 - 2:30With testy exchanges in parliament.
-
2:33 - 2:35But the reforms were disliked
-
2:35 - 2:41and the legislation had to be forced through
parliament, sparking violent protest. -
2:41 - 2:46Macron increasingly criticized the government
but still enjoyed the president's support. -
2:46 - 2:51Then last year he launched his own political
movement, En Marche, or On the Move -
2:51 - 2:54thrusting him into
the national spotlight. -
2:54 - 2:57He’s really come out of nowhere,
you know, three years ago -
2:57 - 3:00Emmanuel Macron was barely
known to the general public -
3:00 - 3:03and here he is today
on the verge of becoming President. -
3:03 - 3:04That's Mark Deen.
-
3:04 - 3:07I’m the deputy bureau chief
at Bloomberg News in Paris -
3:07 - 3:10and I’m on the campaign trail
with Emmanuel Macron. -
3:10 - 3:14The youthful contender was seen
as a presidential long shot. -
3:14 - 3:18When he started his movement everyone,
you know, including, many journalists -
3:18 - 3:21including myself, said oh well,
you know, that's pretty cute, -
3:21 - 3:25and it's a nice effort but, you know,
he's not going to be president. -
3:25 - 3:29But borrowing from US President
Barack Obama’s election playbook, -
3:29 - 3:33he took to social media and ran
a large grass-roots campaign. -
3:34 - 3:38By the time France went to the polls
for the first round of voting in April -
3:38 - 3:41he had successfully
reinvented himself. -
3:42 - 3:47He was no longer the failed reformer
working under a failed President... -
3:47 - 3:50but a new voice in politics.
-
4:08 - 4:11He secured the most votes of any
candidate in the first round, -
4:11 - 4:14putting him into a runoff
with another political outsider, -
4:14 - 4:17the far-right Marine Le Pen.
-
4:18 - 4:21Still it’s not all smooth sailing
into the The Élysée Palace - -
4:21 - 4:26Macron has many critics on both
sides of the political spectrum. -
4:26 - 4:30But against a far-right candidate
who wants to leave the EU, -
4:30 - 4:34will voters on the left and the right
swing behind Macron? -
4:34 - 4:38The answer is that polls currently
show that that is what will happen. -
4:38 - 4:45However, you know, this election is not over,
abstention is key and anything can happen, -
4:45 - 4:48we’ve seen it with Brexit,
we’ve seen it with Trump.
