How to Live as Presence -

0:16 - 0:21[Mooji] In the morning, you get up and sit.
-
0:21 - 0:23Just that, you know.
-
0:23 - 0:26And just pay attention to your being.
-
0:26 - 0:30Before you go out and touch the world,
-
0:30 - 0:35already your mind is touching the world
inside your own room -
0:35 - 0:38in the form of thoughts, feelings, judgements,
-
0:38 - 0:40and plans, projections, and so on.
-
0:40 - 0:46So sit quietly, and just notice.
-
0:46 - 0:49See if you can discern the difference
-
0:49 - 0:53between the mind energy and beingness.
-
0:53 - 0:55Always beingness is there first.
-
0:55 - 0:58You cannot have mind energy without consciousness.
-
0:58 - 1:01Beingness and consciousness are same thing.
-
1:01 - 1:03So, you sit quietly.
-
1:03 - 1:07Don't try to stop the mind or to stop thinking.
-
1:07 - 1:09Notice first.
-
1:09 - 1:12That is a very neutral attitude.
-
1:12 - 1:15You stay put. You observe. Just be observing.
-
1:15 - 1:19You say, 'Ahhh'.
You can feel so much [sounds of mind chattering]. -
1:19 - 1:22Don't get entangled in that.
Don't log into it. -
1:22 - 1:24Just notice that.
-
1:24 - 1:28Also, notice the space which we don't notice.
-
1:28 - 1:30Often we don't notice it.
-
1:30 - 1:33Nobody pays any attention to that.
-
1:33 - 1:37And yet, that space is there
before any noise comes. -
1:37 - 1:41It's there during the noise
and it's there after the noise. -
1:41 - 1:43Nothing has happened to it.
-
1:43 - 1:46So I say, just pay attention.
Don't create anything. -
1:46 - 1:49Just simple, sober attention.
-
1:49 - 1:53And then you start to see that
the mind is all the things, -
1:53 - 1:55and it is almost always personal.
-
1:55 - 1:59'I've got to do this and this ...' 'Oh, no ...'
Chat, chat ... -
1:59 - 2:02It's always personal. That's the mind stuff.
-
2:02 - 2:04The beingness is not personal.
-
2:04 - 2:10It is like space, silence and peace.
And presence! -
2:10 - 2:12Just presence.
-
2:12 - 2:15In one word I can say, just 'presence'.
-
2:15 - 2:17Impersonal presence. Impartial presence.
-
2:17 - 2:21Sit with that
and be one with just the presence. -
2:21 - 2:24Stay with the presence
because that is the ground. -
2:24 - 2:29The mind is like a ship
without an anchor, in a storm. -
2:29 - 2:31[acts as a ship tossed all over]
-
2:31 - 2:33But the presence is like the root.
-
2:33 - 2:37I can't call it an anchor
because an anchor is a small thing. -
2:37 - 2:39Presence is everywhere!
-
2:39 - 2:43Stay with that and clarify your being
-
2:43 - 2:46just by paying attention to that.
-
2:46 - 2:50And see that it is not a waiting state.
-
2:50 - 2:53Beingness is not waiting for the mind to relax.
-
2:53 - 2:56It is just constant. It is there.
-
2:56 - 2:59Relative to the mind, it is a constant state.
-
2:59 - 3:02Just by sitting like that,
-
3:02 - 3:08and with that distinction between
mind and presence, and see. -
3:08 - 3:11Then you don't have to try and control the mind.
-
3:11 - 3:14Just by being one with the presence,
-
3:14 - 3:19the mind stuff becomes very weak, meaningless.
-
3:19 - 3:22If you stay as the person,
-
3:22 - 3:30who is what you may call,
-
3:30 - 3:32the kind of daily self,
-
3:32 - 3:35if you stay as the person,
-
3:35 - 3:39then that's the one that
the mind is relating with a lot. -
3:39 - 3:41[chattering sounds]
Like this. -
3:41 - 3:45But if you stay as presence,
even that going on is nothing at all. -
3:45 - 3:48Because that will change.
It's always changing. -
3:48 - 3:50It's always new actors on that stage.
-
3:50 - 3:54But the Self, being Self-aware,
this is beautiful. -
3:54 - 3:57If you do this, even for ten minutes or so,
-
3:57 - 3:59you're going to like it so much
-
3:59 - 4:03because you're experiencing
the peace that is naturally your Self. -
4:03 - 4:06You just pay attention to that.
-
4:06 - 4:09Even if you do it for a short time,
do it completely. -
4:09 - 4:12You'll come to a point where you see,
-
4:12 - 4:16'OK, Mooji says,
"Don't get entangled in the mind stuff", -
4:16 - 4:20but it is difficult
because they are very familiar'. -
4:20 - 4:24It is like old friends
come to the house and knock. -
4:24 - 4:26And, 'Arghh!'
You are not to answer. -
4:26 - 4:28I said, Yes, you are not to answer
-
4:28 - 4:32because although they are old friends,
they are stale friends. -
4:32 - 4:35They are not good friends.
-
4:35 - 4:39Don't accept something,
only because of familiarity. -
4:39 - 4:43It has come,
and you know the scenario that happens. -
4:43 - 4:46The minute you engage
from the personal standpoint, -
4:46 - 4:50it is very difficult to pull away from it.
-
4:50 - 4:54But you exercise your discernment.
You are looking. -
4:54 - 4:59This is not something you have to create
because that is a fact already. -
4:59 - 5:01It is just that it's a fact unnoticed.
-
5:01 - 5:04Now you must notice the fact that,
-
5:04 - 5:07when you think of yourself as 'I',
-
5:07 - 5:12very quickly the mind is taking claim of this 'I'.
-
5:12 - 5:14When we say, 'I',
-
5:14 - 5:17we are almost always thinking, 'I person am'.
-
5:17 - 5:19'I person am.'
-
5:19 - 5:24Not the words, but actually what they mean.
-
5:24 - 5:27We think of ourself as a person.
-
5:27 - 5:30You open your door to leave your room
as a person. -
5:30 - 5:33Obviously, if you go out as a person,
-
5:33 - 5:35you are going to meet a world of persons.
-
5:35 - 5:39And you are going to interrelate
as person to person. -
5:39 - 5:43Leave your room as presence.
-
5:43 - 5:45Leave the room as presence.
-
5:45 - 5:49This little thing you can do.
And it doesn't take that much time. -
5:49 - 5:53Gradually, as you keep at it,
-
5:53 - 5:55you see that it becomes natural.
-
5:55 - 5:59It is not that you have to practice
to be your Self, -
5:59 - 6:02but you have to practice to be your Self.
Do you see? -
6:02 - 6:05Your self is there. Our true Self is here.
-
6:05 - 6:09Even the false selves cannot appear
without the true Self. -
6:09 - 6:11It is here.
-
6:11 - 6:16But because of the reflex
to begin from the place of personhood, -
6:16 - 6:20it's like you're here,
but you're living as though you're there, -
6:20 - 6:23and you're meeting the world as there.
-
6:23 - 6:26This is why I say,
This is the mask of what you are. -
6:26 - 6:31You are dealing with the world,
but actually, your Self is here. -
6:31 - 6:37You are living as the mask, unaware of your Self.
-
6:37 - 6:45That is the main and most important thing
to recognise. -
6:45 - 6:47It is the most important!
-
6:47 - 6:54If you are just snipering the little troubles
that come here, -
6:54 - 6:57[demonstrates shooting at individual troubles]
-
6:57 - 7:02you are going to have to connect
with a good bullet store, -
7:02 - 7:06because it's going to keep coming
with more and more things. -
7:06 - 7:10Or if you go out fishing
with one string and a hook, -
7:10 - 7:13you might catch a fish now and again,
-
7:13 - 7:18but what I am sharing with you
is like fishing with a huge net -
7:18 - 7:21that covers the whole ocean, actually.
-
7:21 - 7:23Why do I say that?
-
7:23 - 7:29You have to find the one
that is the cause of this world -
7:29 - 7:32and this worldly person and identity.
-
7:32 - 7:34You have to find it.
-
7:34 - 7:37Why? How can you know him?
-
7:37 - 7:40Because he also goes by the name of 'I'.
-
7:40 - 7:45That is one of the great paradoxes.
-
7:45 - 7:51Because I say, 'I' is the first to appear,
-
7:51 - 7:55'I' is the first in any language.
-
7:55 - 8:01The intuition, the sense 'I am' appears first.
-
8:01 - 8:05Only then can you see other, or this and that,
-
8:05 - 8:09because 'I' is the subject for the experiencing,
the sense 'I'. -
8:09 - 8:13But we must understand what the 'I' means.
-
8:13 - 8:17Because, as I said before, God says, 'I am',
-
8:17 - 8:20but the ego also says, 'I am',
-
8:20 - 8:23and even the devil says, 'I am'.
-
8:23 - 8:25So, is it the same?
-
8:25 - 8:27You must see the difference.
-
8:27 - 8:32The personal sense 'I am' is the root cause,
-
8:32 - 8:35'I am' meaning, 'I am the body'.
-
8:35 - 8:40You don't remember saying that,
but instinctively we relate. -
8:40 - 8:43'If you see this body, I am this one.
This is me.' -
8:43 - 8:48'I am the body',
then, 'I am my conditioning'. -
8:48 - 8:50Then other conditioning can come.
-
8:50 - 8:53That is where the person is born.
-
8:53 - 8:56The person is not born at the birth of the body.
-
8:56 - 8:58The person is born when the belief,
-
8:58 - 9:03'I am the body and I am my conditioning',
-
9:03 - 9:06when that is born, the person comes.
-
9:06 - 9:11But before the person comes,
consciousness is there. -
9:11 - 9:16[Mooji] Is that saying too many things?
[Voices in sangha] No. -
9:16 - 9:23[Mooji] So, as you begin
to break the reflex energy, -
9:23 - 9:30which is immediately starting to think
in the 'I am the person' mode, -
9:30 - 9:33then you can continue all day thinking,
'I am the person', -
9:33 - 9:36trying to sort out all the problems
-
9:36 - 9:39of the 'I am the person, I am the body' mode.
-
9:39 - 9:42This is why I said,
in the morning when you get up, -
9:42 - 9:46sit for a little bit, in silence,
-
9:46 - 9:49and watch your sense of self,
-
9:49 - 9:55which means your mind and the sense of being,
-
9:55 - 9:58and discern the difference.
-
9:58 - 10:02The mind will be [chattering sounds]
with some personal quality. -
10:02 - 10:05Beingness is impersonal.
-
10:05 - 10:08Beingness is like space.
-
10:08 - 10:10Inside and outside, it is like space.
-
10:10 - 10:14A mind is like a person,
because it comes with the noise -
10:14 - 10:16and intention and emotion,
-
10:16 - 10:20plans, attachments, and desires,
all of that history. -
10:20 - 10:23So you are aware of the noise.
-
10:23 - 10:28So, this time, don't just link up.
-
10:28 - 10:30Be aware of it only.
-
10:30 - 10:34If you link up, you're going to say,
'Please help me to get rid of it'. -
10:34 - 10:37No, just being aware is enough. Be aware.
-
10:37 - 10:39And be aware at the same time,
-
10:39 - 10:45of the space of being, the place of presence.
-
10:45 - 10:50And you will see that the presence is stillness,
the mind is movement. -
10:50 - 10:53Remain in the stillness.
-
10:53 - 10:56You don't have to become something.
-
10:56 - 10:58It is there already!
-
10:58 - 11:00You are already watching from stillness.
-
11:00 - 11:02So when I say, Be zero,
-
11:02 - 11:08zero means Emptiness, the Self.
Stay like this. -
11:08 - 11:12If you sit like this for five, seven minutes,
ten minutes if you want, -
11:12 - 11:16it's going to be the best ten minutes
you're going to spend. -
