The C Chord (Guitar Lesson BC-132) Guitar for beginners Stage 3

  • 0:09 - 0:10
    Hi, How you doing
  • 0:10 - 0:11
    Justin here
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    for our lesson: 132
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    which is the C chord.
  • 0:14 - 0:16
The last of the big eight
  • 0:16 - 0:20
    which is, the main eight
Open Chord shapes that you learn
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    when you are
    starting your guitar journey.
  • 0:22 - 0:23
And this is the last one,
  • 0:23 - 0:24
    this is the C chord.
  • 0:24 - 0:27
Now, a lot of people find the C chord
    a little awkward.
  • 0:27 - 0:30
It's maybe not quite as stretchy
    as the G chord.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    Well, at least not acrosswise
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    but it is lengthwise.
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    It's a little bit funny.
  • 0:35 - 0:36
So let's go to a close up
  • 0:36 - 0:39
and see if we can sort out
the different ways of getting this stretch.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
It is just a matter of practising it.
  • 0:42 - 0:46
    I've never ever-ever-ever had a student
who's not been able to do it.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    I have had students instead
    who really struggled
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    and they felt like
they were never going to do it.
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    But, if you persevere
  • 0:52 - 0:56
you will find that the C chord
    is pretty damn easy.
  • 0:56 - 0:57
Let's have a look at it.
  • 0:59 - 1:00
Here we are looking at the C chord.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    Now, hopefully
    it doesn't look too bad
  • 1:02 - 1:05
but it is a little bit of a stretch.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
So, let's go through the problems
    and solutions for this chord.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    So, first one :
  • 1:10 - 1:13
first finger : first fret, second string.
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    Nothing on the E string,
and nothing on the G string.
  • 1:15 - 1:19
There's nothing on the first string,
and nothing on the third string.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
Second finger is reaching over here
  • 1:21 - 1:23
to the second fret, at the fourth string.
  • 1:23 - 1:26
And then, third finger's gonna stretch over here,
  • 1:26 - 1:29
to the third fret of the fifth string.
  • 1:29 - 1:32
Now, there are a few different tips
    we can give you
  • 1:32 - 1:33
    for getting this stretch nice
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    First of all,
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    if you play really square
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    like this,
  • 1:37 - 1:38
it's actually quite difficult to do
  • 1:38 - 1:41
with the fingers parallel to the frets.
  • 1:41 - 1:45
I can feel that's stretching my hand
    doing that right now.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
Now, if you look at the way
    that I'm doing it,
  • 1:47 - 1:50
I'm kind of laying the fingers over
    a little bit.
  • 1:50 - 1:53
Now, if I took my hand off,
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    they kind of
that looks like that they are in a line,
  • 1:55 - 1:57
they're all kind of touching each other.
  • 1:57 - 2:01
And you can see that the angle now
is kind of that way a little bit.
  • 2:01 - 2:05
    it's actually
they're kind of pointing at my eyes.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    Whereas that way
    they're pointing at the ceiling.
  • 2:07 - 2:10
We just turn it round a little bit like that,
  • 2:10 - 2:11
and you get a bit more of a...
  • 2:11 - 2:14
It definitely makes it easier to play .
    Yeah ?
  • 2:14 - 2:17
So this way, you really have to stretch
    the distance between your fingers.
  • 2:17 - 2:21
    Here, you're just changing
how far each finger is reaching out.
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    That makes a big difference
    for that one.
  • 2:23 - 2:26
    Now, you can probably see
that my thumb is flopping over there.
  • 2:26 - 2:29
But actually, we want to get
that thumb behind for you now.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    Later on you can use
    your thumb over here,
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    but for you now,
    back behind.
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    Now, the other important thing
    with the C chord
  • 2:35 - 2:36
is that we want to make sure
  • 2:36 - 2:38
that the tip of this third finger
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    is muting, the sixth string.
  • 2:40 - 2:42
So, it shouldn't press down on this string.
  • 2:42 - 2:45
The very tip of the finger
    just touches the string
  • 2:45 - 2:47
and stops it from ringing out.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
Now, the thing that you'll find here
    with this chord as well,
  • 2:51 - 2:53
especially when you're going to do
the strum - pick up - strum,
  • 2:53 - 2:55
is that there are quite a few places
  • 2:55 - 2:58
    where fingers can lean over
    and touch other strings. So,
  • 2:58 - 2:59
    . . .
  • 2:59 - 3:00
There is the correct sound for it
  • 3:00 - 3:04
    Now, the first note,
    which is the fifth string,
  • 3:04 - 3:06
you're probably not going to have
    too much trouble with it.
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    Pretty straight forward.
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    The next note,
  • 3:08 - 3:09
here which is the fourth string,
  • 3:09 - 3:13
it's very likely here that your third finger
is going to be leaning over
  • 3:13 - 3:14
    and touching that fourth string.
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    So, that's the first thing
    you wanna look out for
  • 3:17 - 3:19
is making sure that finger is nice and up.
  • 3:19 - 3:22
Then we have the Open G string,
  • 3:22 - 3:23
    which, of course,
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    this finger,
if it's leaning over a bit too flat,
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    will mute that G string.
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    First finger
    should be ok.
  • 3:29 - 3:31
Not many people have trouble with that note.
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    But then,
    the open E string
  • 3:33 - 3:36
if the first finger is leaning over
    a little bit too much
  • 3:36 - 3:38
you'll get the open E string muted.
  • 3:38 - 3:41
So, really, the trick with C chord is, one :
  • 3:41 - 3:43
don't be too squared like this.
  • 3:43 - 3:45
    Allow your fingers to be
a little bit of an angle.
  • 3:45 - 3:48
And also to make sure that
you're really on the points with the fingers.
  • 3:48 - 3:50
Don't let them lay down too flat
  • 3:50 - 3:53
or you'll just always be muting
    the strings next to them.
  • 3:56 - 4:00
Ok, I hope you had fun
stretching out for that C chord.
  • 4:00 - 4:02
It's a little bit of a tough one
  • 4:02 - 4:03
    - but it's not that bad -
  • 4:03 - 4:05
and it just seems impossible right now,
  • 4:05 - 4:06
but, after a week or two,
  • 4:06 - 4:08
your fingers will have all limbered up
  • 4:08 - 4:09
and it'll be a lot easier.
  • 4:09 - 4:10
    After a month or two,
  • 4:10 - 4:13
you'll wonder why you ever had
a problem with it at all
  • 4:13 - 4:17
    because it's not that bad
in the grand scheme of guitar chords.
